| The last thing Ranger fans want to see
The injury bug has been contagious in Rangertown this season. Before the season even started, starting center, Derek Stepan fractured his fibula in a freak accident during practice. Before the second period could even start in the Rangers first game against the St. Louis Blues this season, defensemen & the anointed messiah of the powerplay, Dan Boyle, went down with a broken hand. These were two huge losses for the Rangers, and the Rangers have had to mix and match lines in the hopes of finding success. So, last night, when Ryan McDonagh was crumpled down on the ice, holding his shoulder in agony, it gave Ranger fans a major scare.
Ryan McDonagh, the American captain, and one of the youngest captains in Ranger history, has a history of shoulder issues. During last night’s game, in the first period, McDonagh took a clean hit from Winnipeg Jets left winger Evander Kane. McDonagh writhed in agony. While at the game, nothing was announced to the crowd, but it only took a few minutes to receive texts from friends, that McDonagh, one of the most likable Rangers on the club, was diagnosed with a separated shoulder. To put the icing on the cake, rugged defenseman Kevin Klein was also injured, with a foot contusion. Let’s not also forget that another Rangers defensemen, John Moore was also out, serving his first game of a five game suspension, for a dirty hit on Monday night, against the Minnesota Wild.
Defensemen Dan Girardi & Marc Staal, both important members of Ranger teams past and present, wound up logging their most minutes of the season. New comers, Matt Hunwick and Mike Kostka, would also get the most ice time in their short NHL careers. If there is anything positive about any of these injuries, it is the play of Matt Hunwick. Hunwick has stepped up huge for the Rangers ever since the injury to Dan Boyle. On the flipside, after a shit-show of a game against the Islanders, where Kostka was responsible for two bad turnovers that led to two goals, Kostka played well under the pressure last night against the Winnipeg Jets.
There is no word on how long the injuries to McDonagh or Klein will be. Klein could possibly be back Monday, to skate against the Blues, while the McDonagh injury seems more serious. With Moore still out with a suspension, the Rangers are going to have to make decisions. The Rangers, who will definitely need at least one defenseman from their minor league affiliate, the Hartford Wolfpack, may need two, come Monday night.
This is where I’m hoping the blueshirts will finally give Dylan “THE UNDERTAKER” McIlrath a shot. The knock on McIlrath is his speed and that he takes too many penalties. However, seeing 90% of Ranger games live and the rest on TV, it is apparent that outside of Mats Zuccarrello, the Rangers are missing a scrappy guy. They have no enforcer at all. They are missing the play of Derek Dorsett (traded to Vancouver) and Dan Carcillo (free agent, Chicago). They don’t have that goon, and the Rangers, while taking clean hits, are taking huge hits on the ice without fear of repercussion.
McIlrath, at only 22 years old, played a few games for the squad last year, in a relief role. While he will not earn a full-time defensemen spot with this team anytime soon, this could be a good try-out to see what the Rangers have with him. It has worked thus far with Hunwick. It will also give the Rangers a true goon, that they sorely need to help the team.
However, who will most likely come up will be Conor Allen, who logged several games with the Rangers last year. Conor is more finished and polished than McIlrath, but doesn’t bring the same intensity nor fear to his opponents like McIlrath does. Conor is smoother with the puck and is capable of scoring as well, something that the Rangers desperately need.
In either event, this recent injury to Ryan McDonagh couldn’t have happened at a worse time for the Rangers, due to what is going on with their other defensemen. The only positive is that it is still the beginning of the season, where roster moves and seeing what you have is still an option.

| Can he be called King without a Crown?
Henrik Lundqvist will go down as one of the greatest goalies in New York Rangers history. However, until he wins a Stanley Cup, Mike Richter will always be the greatest Rangers goalie to me. Henrik might break every single Rangers goaltending record, but until he is skating around with the Stanley Cup over his head, he is just a great goalie, not the best, in Rangers history.
Listen, I love screaming “HEN-RY” after every big save at the Garden like anyone else. Hank has carried this team through many games in the past. He’s won playoff rounds. But is he the same goalie this year after getting his mega-deal?
The knock by non-Ranger fans about Henrik, or Hank, is that he is a pretty boy model. Perhaps he spends more time on photo shoots than practicing saving shots from shooters. Hank should be allowed to live his life, but it’s hard to believe him when he says he will do anything to win a Cup.
The NHL Salary Cap for 2014-2015 is $69 million dollars. I think that is a low number, as do many people. Due to such a low number, the Rangers lost many good players after their Stanley Cup run. The Rangers lost Anton Stralman (They are missing him huge this season), Benoit Pouliot, Brad Richards, Brian Boyle, Derek Dorsett, and Dan Carcillo. So when Henrik Lundqvist says he will do anything to win a Cup, why did he make a big stink about his contract negotiations and only came up for air & to smile once he signed a 7 year deal for $8.5 million a year?
The salary cap will be increased over the years. However, in 2014-2015, Hank’s contract is 8.1% of team payroll. Hank is a multi-millionaire several times over. In sports, we have seen other elite players, who have already made more money that they could ever spend, take paycuts for the better of the team and to win a championship. Guys like Tom Brady and Eli Manning have done it. A legend like Ray Borque did it. If Hank would only take 5% of payroll, the Rangers could’ve kept Stralman and either pursue a scorer like Paul Stastny during the off-season or even kept someone else from the 2013-2014 roster, a team that took a while to gel.
Hank considers himself an elite goalie, but in two back-to-back Saturday games, he was bested by better goalies in Carey Price in Montreal, and now Ondrej Pavelec of the Jets. Granted, Hank pitched a shutout last night, but when the game was on the line, he faltered, where Pavelec succeeded. Hank is a great goalie and will always be. But I’m not sure if he’s even a top 5 goalie in this league anymore, despite being the HIGHEST PAID GOALIE in the NHL. The second highest paid goalie, Pekka Rinne, of Nashville is getting $7 million, $1.5 million dollars less than Hank.
Sorry Hank, but if you want to be the highest paid goalie in the NHL, you need to start playing like you’re the best goalie in the NHL. For that money, I expect you stand on your head every night. Sometimes you got to make the saves that others can’t make. Sometimes you need to be the best player on the ice. If you want the Cup, then either start winning games on your own this season or take a paycut so you can get help. I don’t blame Hank for the Rangers lack of scoring in some games this season, but look at the opposition. Their goalies are making the stops and carrying their teams. Time for Hank to put down the bronzer and nut up.
And if he can’t do that, then there’s a special GOALBUSTER chomping at the bit for a chance. I have no problem saying “IN CAM WE TRUST!”

| Former Ranger known as Michael Del Zaster to Ranger fans, but goes by Michael Del Zotto everywhere else |
In closing this week, I would be remiss if I didn’t bring up former Ranger Michael Del Zotto. Del Zotto, traded for Kevin Klein mid-way during last season, is currently playing for the Philadelphia Flyers.
First the good on Michael Del Zotto. Del Zotto does alot of charity work, despite being a so-so hockey player. He is not well known, he’s not a superstar, but with the fame he does have, he does many charity events, often unpublicized.
Last year, Sports Illustrated did an article on Del Zotto, after his trade to Nashville, about a special friendship he has with a kid with cerebral palsy. It’s a nice story. Despite playing with his third NHL team in 10 months, MDZ has kept his friendship going on with this unfortunate child. In the SI article, the parents even said it was amazing how MDZ went out of his way to make sure their child Liam always felt good about himself. It really is touching, and shows the good that sports can bring to peoples lives.

Pretty impressive right? I mean “Who’s Nailin Paylin?” was a cult classic and led Lisa Ann right into the porn star HOF. After researching more about this story, it seems that Michael Del Zotto bugs Lisa Ann incessantly for sex and women. I mean, the scoring joke is too easy here.
I brought up MDZ’s charity work before dropping this bomb to show that MDZ isn’t a complete del zaster. He just enjoys annoying porn stars for sexual gratification. Not a crime, and it certainly isn’t the worst thing an athlete has ever done. It’s just hilarious that it’s him.
