Greetings and salutations everyone and welcome to another blog here on BlueCollarBlueShirts.com. And just like that – we’re back.
As I have regularly noted all summer on both this site and on my social media channels – then I can’t say that I’m exactly that excited with this upcoming centennial season.
After all – I just don’t see the Rangers as Stanley Cup contenders.
Rather than a potential parade in June, instead, and I am envisioning the draft lottery – and the huge summer class of free agency too – dominating the headlines come the end of the season.
And while the Blueshirts’ 5-3 victory over the Devils from Sunday was entertaining, a win which also marked the first of six exhibition matches that will be played over the course of the next two-weeks was just that – an exhibition – I also must admit that it was good to have hockey back – and where after last season – I most certainly enjoyed a break away from these guys.
(New York football fans, and right before the September Jewish holidays at that, are already looking a break from their respective teams!)
I’m not going to bury you with the preseason disclaimer throughout the remainder of this game recap/review – because after all – you already know it.
With that said, then you must also keep in mind that while the winners and losers of these six preseason games don’t matter – the performances on ice, mainly what the guys battling for remaining roster spots are doing, is what these games are truly all about.
In other words, while guys like Stinka Zibanedud and Assaultin’ Artie Panarin can have garbage games whenever they slot in, as their contracts are guaranteed and they aren’t going anywhere; conversely, then both the young and old alike, players without guaranteed contracts and NHL deals, are playing for a shot to make Mike Sullivan’s Game One line-up.
We saw a lot of that on Sunday – and while we’ll get into the nightmarish game that Brennan Othmann had – but away from B.O. – and everyone else looking to prove their case excelled when doing so.
Without question, and a player like Matt Rempe, who you could also argue has his varsity roster spot sewn up already, cemented his case for a spot on Sully’s fourth line.
Elsewhere, and a new giant in town, Dylan Roobroeck, was also impressive – so much so – that I can’t be the only fan around that’s clamoring to get a look at a line of Adam Edstrom (who did not play on Sunday)/Roebroeck/Rempe.
And should we ever see that trio together during an NHL game?
Then that will be the tallest line in all of league history.
Another player that had a strong showing was Conor Sheary, Sullivan’s former charge in Pittsburgh that’s currently on a PTO contract.
While it remains to be seen how many players the Rangers will carry on their varsity roster; for one day, and Sheary did a pretty damn good job of making his case heard to his former – and perhaps future – head coach.
Previous to today, and during Sullivan’s first interview of training camp which took place last Wednesday, Chris Drury’s BFF said that he actually preferred putting wingers on their off-wing, stating that it gives these players an edge on the boards.
While this remark was made in reference to Alexis Lafreniere; you could also apply Sullivan’s comments to the likes of Gabe Perreault and Brennan Othmann.
For the left-wing Othmann, the 16th-overall pick of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, Sunday couldn’t have gone any worse for him.
Not only was he turning over pucks left-and-right, including one that directly led to a Devils’ goal – but he also took a stupid penalty – and one so bad that even Rempe (who wouldn’t oblige Kurtis Macdermid’s request for a fight – after all – why would he, as the Rangers were leading by three goals) must’ve been shaking his head over it.
With only 3:23 remaining, and with the Rangers up by three goals (5-2 lead) – Othmann laid out Calen Addison with a dirty hit – as #78 of the Blueshirts went high with an elbow.
While some may claim that Othmann’s shoulder first made contact with Addison’s head before his elbow ever did; regardless, and the hit was high – and more important than that – completely unwarranted too.
Not only did Othmann receive a five-minute major to go along with his game misconduct, but Addison had to leave the game for medical attention (concussion spotters) too.
As a result, Othmann, who needed to have a strong showing as much as anyone (if not more than anyone else), may not get another chance, pending whatever the league decides to do – as a suspension is more likely than not to take place.
While Othmann is now starting to wade into the waters of many other failed first-round picks/busts from Blueshirts’ history (Pavel Brendl, Jamie Lundmark, Hugh Jessiman, Nils Lundkvist, Lias Andersson, Vitali Kravtsov and the “hits” go on-and-on); conversely and Othmann’s counterpart, Gabe Perreault, the Rangers’ first-round pick of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft (23rd-overall), had an excellent preseason debut.
Not only did Perreault break the ice with the game’s first goal – but his line, where he was paired with Sheary and Juuse Parssinen, was arguably the best forward trio from either side.
Why “arguably?”
Because you could also make a case for the line of Aspinall, Roobroeck and Rempe – but since Parsinnen played much better than Aspinall (which should’ve been the case) – then I think that you have to give the Perreault line the edge.
If you can forget about Othmann, then Sunday couldn’t have gone any better for the Rangers.
Away from Othmann, then the only other negative thing to talk about was the team’s 0-3 performance on the power-play – while the penalty kill also surrendered two Devil goals (albeit, one score being of the 5 x 3 variety).
But again, and as we wind up this intro here – these games are primarily about player performances.
After a long time off, which followed with only three days of practice/camp too – then I have to believe that everyone should be happy with what they saw on Sunday.
Wow, look at me – I actually said something nice about this franchise – something I didn’t expect so soon following the results of last year!
Buy a Powerball ticket!

I’m really not that interested in the news coming out of training camp.
In my eyes, it’s all white noise and just fluff pieces for the media. (After all, how many stories can you read about “PLAYER X WORKED OUT THIS SUMMER, OMG OMG OMG!”)
In other words – do your talking on the ice.
However, and for those who do care about this stuff, then on Wednesday, September 17th, and both Mike Sullivan and Chris Drury held a closed doors meeting with the Blueshirts’ bird brain beat reporters – and where of course – this near thirty-minute session was not broadcasted live to Ranger fans:
Not much was really said – and of course – not one “controversial” question was asked either.
While both the media and the Blueshirts’ brain-trust alike praised J.T. Miller as the new captain of the franchise; but not one person explained to us how both Mika Zibanejad (fragile/mentally weak/crybaby) and Artemi Panarin (alleged of sexual assaults and confirmed of making hush-hush payments) are leaders amongst men.
You’d think at least one media member would ask Drury and/or Sullivan about what makes both Zibanejad and Panarin leaders.
And unlike Vincent Trocheck – what players are Mika and Panarin taking under their wings?
More to this point?
Then in Stinka Zibanedud’s first interview, he spent nearly all of it crying about the departure of Chris Kreider.
You can’t make this up.
And of course Part I: Not one birdbrain beat reporter asked Mika if he felt any responsibility for the trade of his best friend either.
And of course Part II: You already know that no one would dare to ask Panarin about his payouts and alleged assault(s).
Come Thursday, September 20th, and the Rangers officially convened together on-ice for the first time in preparation of the upcoming 2025-26 season.
Unlike others, then I can’t really make much of what takes place at these practices – as after all – they aren’t for the public (other teams broadcast their practices to their fans).
All of these scrimmages and skates are a feeling-out process.
And while players these days come into camp in-shape and ready to go (as opposed to bygone eras where training camps were actually used for “training” – as long ago – and hockey players had second jobs during the summer), then I don’t think that you can really take much out of what happens anyway.
If there was any true news, roster-wise, to transpire during the past several days, then it was the fact that it was announced that Braden Schneider, who underwent surgery this summer, won’t play during the team’s first three preseason games.
Currently, Schneider is scheduled to play in two of the final three exhibition matches.

Last time around on this site, I posted my thoughts about the passing of Eddie Giacomin.
You can find that piece here:
RIP Eddie Giacomin: A Full Recap and Detailed Testimonials From His Epic Hall of Fame Career – Including Two Must Watch Videos (And A Never-Heard-Before Story Too)! J.T. Miller Named 29th Captain in Franchise History, Rangers Plan Centennial Celebrations – But Haven’t Announced Any Banner Ceremonies Just Yet Either, NYR (And As Expected) Sell Out; Iconic Sweaters To Be Marred With Advertising, Rookie Games, Camp Opens This Week; Full Roster Announced, Never-Ending Rumors & More
Sadly, on Sunday, and Parent became the third legendary (and Hall of Fame) goalie to pass away during the past three-weeks.
Following the recent deaths of Giacomin and Ken Dryden, and Parent, the greatest Flyer goalie of all-time (and where you can argue that only Ron Hextall has truly succeeded him – as the orange-and-black haven’t had a true franchise goaltender since), passed away.
The two-time Cup champ (1974 and 1975) wasn’t reported to be sick. Instead, it was announced that he was suffering through some back pain the day before his passing.
Parent, who most certainly was a “Ranger Killer” over the years, will always be remembered as royalty in Philadelphia.
Rest in Peace.

Here was Sullivan’s line-up for game one of six preseason matches:
FIRST LINE: Sheary (Sully’s boy)/Parssinen (Feckless Finn 2.0)/Perreault (Good opportunity)
SECOND LINE: Othmann (Trying to make the cut)/Dowling/Raddysh (projected to make the cut)
THIRD LINE: Blidh/Laba/Brodzinski (Should be wearing an “A” over Mika & Panarin)
FOURTH LINE: Aspinall (Not related to the UFC Champ)/Roobroeck (new monster in-town)/Rempe
FIRST PAIR: Vaakanainen/Big Billy Borgen
SECOND PAIR: Pouliot/Fitzgerald
THIRD PAIR: Mr. Mackey/Morrow (Looking to become K’Andre’s replacement)
STARTING GOALIE: Quick
BACK UP GOALIE: Garand
SPARES: Boyko, Dorrington and Terrance
BOX SCORE:
It’s the preseason – but if you want one, then check out: https://www.nhl.com/gamecenter/njd-vs-nyr/2025/09/21/2025010007

I’m not going to go nuts or in-depth about a preseason game – but I’ll show you the Ranger goals, while also telling you what you need to know.
And with that said, our first GAME REVIEW of the season – and where as noted all-summer – I’m not so sure how many of these I’ll be doing.

FIRST PERIOD
I should note here that Sunday’s game was an exclusive broadcast of the Devils.
In other words, M$G(N), with all their money, cable stations, streaming services and social media channels, didn’t present a Rangers’ broadcast of this game.
While Kenny Albert would’ve been unavailable (NFL), then I’m sure that the Rangers could’ve had John Giannone call this game with Dave Maloney.
And is always the case during the preseason – no pregame or post-game shows either.
Don La Greca, the new Devils’ play-by-play man, had the call with Mr. Devil himself, Ken Daneyko.
For what it’s worth, then I thought that this new duo was fair when talking about the Rangers.
However, rather than giving us the “it’s only the preseason” disclaimer just once – instead – and we were reminded of this fact no less than 7867869689678679867986 times.
In addition, La Greca, who formerly called Blueshirt games on the radio, kind of called this game as it was over the airwaves – and not on the screen.
I’m sure that he’ll eventually make the transition from radio to television.
After all – and it’s only the preseason!
As I was waiting for “OH JOE, JACK HUGHES JOE, HE GAINED TEN-POUNDS IN THE OFF-SEASON JOE,” and “Sam, Rachel Herzog works hard Sam. She’s a fabulous woman Sam”; two former starters, now turned into serviceable back-ups, Jake Allen and Jonathan Quick, saw Parssinen lose the first draw of the preseason.
Immediately, and Daneyko, while praising Rempe (he called him a “cult hero”), also said that he was “polarizing” – and how MacDermid was dressed for this game.
Daneyko was trying to will a Rempe/MacDermid fight into existence, and while we had two “fights” during this tilt – a Rempe/MacDermid bout never transpired – but MacDermid, a true plug, did attempt to goad Rempe into one.
While the Rangers didn’t do much offensively this period (they only had two shots on goal with eight-minutes remaining); they made their first shot count – and as Perreault did at just the 3:12 mark:
Gabe Perreault scores the first Rangers goal of the preseason‼️ #NYR #Rangers pic.twitter.com/L97ckuBcFS
— Dan Godlewski (@Danthfc_) September 21, 2025
1-0, GOOD GUYS, as Perreault buried a perfect feed from Casey “RELATIONS TO DEVILS’ GM TOM, JOE, TOM BANGED CASEY’S MOM JOE” Fitzgerald past Allen.
(Yes, I will continue to honor Sam Rosen and Joe Micheletti on this site. FABULOUS!)
As noted earlier, you had to like what you saw here.
After all, it’s not very often when a high-end Blueshirts’ draft pick comes out the gate hot.
While it remains to be seen where Perreault starts the season; but for one day, and “The Book of Gabe” wrote himself into the varsity roster conversation.
As it was noticeable that Othmann couldn’t get going (turnovers); it was also noticeable that Rempe came to play.
Just like as he’s always done ever since his February of 2024 arrival, and the big man in the #73 sweater spent most of his shifts attacking while in the Devils’ zone.
It also looked like he’s improved his skating too – as he was taking long and calculating strides like Secretariat on the track. (Okay – I may be exaggerating a bit – but just go with it!)
The Rangers’ PK got their first work of the preseason at the 9:21 mark, as Sully’s boy, Sheary, was busted for tripping.
The Devils’ man-up teams spent the first fifty-seconds of their attack in front of Quick. Following a clear-and-a-change, Quick made two back-to-back saves, but with only 26-seconds remaining on the Rangers’ PK and Brian Halonen tied the game after his one-timed, top-shelf, bang-bang job.
1-1.
Down to 6:21 to go, and “OLD FRIEND” Kevin Rooney, aka ROON DOGS, put the Rangers on the power-play for the first time this preseason.
As I said all last-season, and as I said on Twitter (@NYCTHEMIC) at the time too – PUT MATT REMPE ON THE FIRST POWER-PLAY UNIT!
I feel stronger than ever about this – and especially with Chris Kreider now in Anaheim.
What’s the argument here?
After all, you have this giant that could be a net front presence, and one who can screen goalies, get tips and open up space.
And thankfully?
While it took Sullivan a bit – he did eventually get there – but more about that once we get to the third period.
The Rangers’ power-play didn’t do much of anything here, nor did they do anything during their second attempt, which took place with 3:46 to go (Halonen, high-sticking).
While the Blueshirts squandered their pair of man-up attacks; the Perreault line sent a bevy of shots Allen’s way during the final twenty-seconds.
Allen did his job – but it was promising when seeing this attack – and where you could see how much a roster spot meant to both Perreault and Sheary. (Parssinen’s spot, most likely as a third-line center, seems like a lock.)
One-up after twenty-minutes.
Here’s what I said at the time:
1-1 after 1. 1P Thoughts:
— Devils 1-1 on the PP, #NYR 0-2 – yes I know what this game doesn’t matter, but that’s what hurt them last year.
— Will Sully give Rempe a chance on PP1? Let’s see if he can be a net front guy.
— These games are most meaningful for fringe guys -…— BlueCollarBlueShirts (@NYCTheMiC) September 21, 2025

SECOND PERIOD
To start this frame and Nico Daws replaced Allen. (Dylan Garand would later replace Quick, but not until near the half-way mark of the game/period.)
If anyone had a worse night than Othmann, then it was Daws – as he was torched for four goals this period – and three in a row too.
Just 3:11 in, and Rempe drove hard to the net, which then allowed Roobroeck to cash-in the loose change:
Great play from Matt Rempe and Roobroeck cleans up the loose change it’s 2-1 Rangers‼️ #NYR #Rangers pic.twitter.com/izyCqzgxgV
— Dan Godlewski (@Danthfc_) September 21, 2025
2-1, GOOD GUYS – and if it wasn’t for Othmann’s boneheaded penalty – then this would’ve went for the game-winner too.
I can’t praise Rempe enough, but in a new wrinkle (with Roobroeck being that wrinkle), then if we ever get that Edstrom/Roobroeck/Rempe line – then we’ll truly have some New York Giants in the Big Apple.
At the 8:17 mark, Garand entered the game.
As noted all-summer, I do wonder what Garand’s ceiling is.
While he’s most likely CZAR IGOR’s back-up next season (assuming that Quick retires); then what?
CZAR IGOR has an eight-year deal.
In other words, Garand isn’t budging Igor from the Blueshirts’ barrel.
For Garand to reach career heights, then he’s going to have to do it somewhere else – and where he’ll have to do it in Hartford for the time being.
While the two big brutes didn’t go down on record as scoring the game-winner; conversely, and Sheary, Sully’s PTO signing (every new head coach does this with their former players, so this isn’t exclusive to Sully either), did just that:
Conor Sheary on the breakaway 🎯
(via @NYRangers)pic.twitter.com/3jErgdLqyH
— SleeperNHL (@SleeperNHL) September 21, 2025
The Feckless Finn 2.0 (and I’ll shed this nickname once he proves me wrong), Jusse Parssinen, forced a turnover in the neutral zone, which then led Sheary into scoring the 3-1, GOOD GUYS, breakaway goal.
Right after that?
And we didn’t have to wait until to”Morrow” for the next Rangers’ goal:
What a move and a shot from Scott Morrow to put the Rangers up 3#NYR pic.twitter.com/utjobZp6cA https://t.co/tvFHp6ywyU
— Joseph (@HockeyJoseph10) September 21, 2025
4-1, GOOD GUYS and similar to others – and this was a nice shot from the slot for a player looking to break into the Rangers’ ranks.
Morrow, acquired from Carolina in the K’Andre Miller trade, is hoping not only to take Miller’s former roster spot – but to exceed what #79 did in New York too.
This was a strong start – and where like the other defensemen – most of the blue-liners played well.
After all, the three Devil goals were scored because of Othmann – and not because of any defensive lapses.
Down to 4:08 remaining and this is when Othmann, awful all-game, turned over the puck.
In turn, we then had an “Otter-to-Cotter” goal – as Paul Cotter beat Garand for the 4-2 score.
But just a minute later you ask?
Then JONNY HOCKEY, government name Jonny Brodzinski, and a player that deserves an “A” much more than Zibanebad and the alleged serial sexual assaulter, returned the Rangers to a three-goal lead:
Rangers answer right back — Brodzinski buries the rebound with a quick release! 5-2 #NYR! pic.twitter.com/GwZWT8wT1K
— Jennifer O’Regan (@Jenny_ORegan) September 21, 2025
5-2, GOOD GUYS – and man, oh man, does Brodzinski remain under-appreciated by the majority of this fan base.
As frustrations continued to rise among the Newark Neanderthals, we then had NATHAN on NATHAN violence – as Nathan Legare “challenged” Nathan Aspinall.
We found out that the Rangers’ Nathan isn’t exactly like Tom Aspinall – the current UFC Heavyweight Champion. (NO RELATIONS JOE!)
After some light hugging and petting, the Devils’ Nathan took down the Rangers’ Nathan with ease – but the Blueshirts wouldn’t allow this underhanded tactic to go unanswered.
(More about this below.)
As the two Nathan’s left the ice, this is when MacDermid tried to goad Rempe into taking a fight.
Rempe laughed it off.
After all, why risk injury and especially in a game when you’re up by three?
This entertaining period continued and come 2:25 remaining, Urho Vicodin, who was a pill that Sullivan didn’t want to swallow (two bad penalties), was boxed for holding.
The Rangers’ PK did their job here.
5-2, GOOD GUYS, through forty-minutes.
Here’s what I said at the time:
5-2, good guys, after 40. #NYR 2P Thoughts:
— Entertaining twenty minutes.
— No more disclaimers about what this is – but Othmann hasn’t looked good at all.
— Perrault line has been strong – Sheary making a case for a roster spot.
— Can’t wait to see the real NY Giants -…— BlueCollarBlueShirts (@NYCTheMiC) September 21, 2025

THIRD PERIOD
Following an explosive-and-busy middle twenty-minutes, then these final twenty-minutes was like watching grass grow – or at least that was the case until Othmann entered the chat.
I should also be clear here, then from the Rangers’ perspective – and BORING was good!
After all, then all you wanted to see here was the Blueshirts maintain their lead and get out of this game with the win – and with no theatrics or drama attached (unlike the Jets’ loss during this time).
The Rangers, who played it safe, had several chances to extend their lead, but a Rempe-to-Perreault set-up, another opportunity for Sheary and a Blidh breakaway try were all denied.
As we crossed the half-way mark of the period, then down to 9:30 remaining and this is when Mackey sought revenge for Legare’s attack on Othmann.
Mackey, after a few left hands, made short work of Legare.
I loved this, as while this fight wasn’t necessary in a preseason game, then this was just another example of Mackey standing up for a teammate – and a first-time teammate at that too!
Mackey received an additional two-minutes (slashing) and the Rangers, as Mackey did for Aspinall, defended his honor by killing off this Devils’ power-play.
Down to 5:12 to go and Sheary drew a penalty.
This is when Sullivan used Rempe on PP1 for the first time.
While these two-minutes didn’t produce a PPG (0-3 on the PP); you did notice Rempe, as he was screening Daws and looking for tips-and-deflections.
More of this please!
And down to 3:23 remaining, the final rotten cherry on top for Othmann:
Brennan Othmann was given a five-minute major for elbowing and a game misconduct after catching Calen Addison with a high hit…😬
(🎥MSGN, h/t @NYRFanatic)pic.twitter.com/GvNHvvPfD4
— BarDown (@BarDown) September 21, 2025
Obviously, such a penalty wasn’t necessary – and it also screamed the word “FRUSTRATION” too.
We’ll see if Othmann gets suspended for this or not.
And yep, and this isn’t hindsight being 20/20 either, as I said it at the time too – what could’ve been had Drury not considered Othmann (and others like him, like Kaapo Kakko and Filip Chytil), “UNTOUCHABLE” during the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline.
Ugh.
A minute following this game-misconduct and this is when You’re a Ho Vicodin cross-checked Cody Glass.
Another completely unwarranted penalty – and especially with the three-goal lead.
Areseniy Gritsyuk (I had to Google the spelling of his name too) cut the Blueshirts’ margin to two following his 5-3, 5 x 3, power-play goal with 1:39 remaining.
The Devils would then pull Daws for an extra attacker but the Rangers would survive this brief scare – and can you imagine the headlines – and the tone of this tome too – had the Blueshirts blown this match – and even if “it was only a preseason game!”
5-3, GOOD GUYS, your final – and don’t let the Othmann stuff take away from all of the good that the other players did throughout this match.
(The only reason why I focused on him so much tonight is because he’s one of those guys trying to make this team. In addition, it was his weak preseason last year that sent him to Hartford.)

FINAL THOUGHTS
A strong showing for this Blueshirts’ bunch – and where it’s good to have positive conversations about who can win the two or three varsity roster spots (pending on how many men the team will carry) that are remaining.
As far as any other news, then I’m not going to get caught up in the roster cuts until the final day.
After all, of the 61-invites that attended camp on Thursday (over a dozen have been cut/re-assigned since), then we pretty much know at least 37-players that will be exiting the M$G training facility come Opening Day.
Perreault is trying not to be one of those guys. Othmann, unless he can redeem himself, should be.
STOCKS UP (Fringe/varsity borderline players only): Perreault, Sheary, Rooebreck and Morrow.
STOCKS DOWN: Othmann, Vaakanainen and Aspinall
UNNOTICEABLE: Laba, Raddysh and Dowling
WON’T GET A SPOT BUT THAT WON’T DETER HIM: Mackey
Depending on real-life and my work schedule, I may return on Tuesday night with a Rangers/Bruins review.
I’d expect more varsity regulars to participate in this game – as that’s usually the case at home during the preseason.
