Greetings and salutations everyone and welcome to another blog here on BlueCollarBlueShirts.com. IGOR! IGOR! IGOR!
Unlike everyone else in Rangerstown, USA?
Then there hasn’t been a bigger DAY ONE supporter of the man than yours truly!

“It was a long time in my head so I thought that I’d go celebrate in a different way. Like I said, I didn’t see the puck go across the line and I was just a little bit shy and I didn’t know what I could do. So maybe next time. I will keep trying to score [again].” – CZAR IGOR on his immediate reaction to his first NHL goal – which also doubled-up as the first ever goalie goal in Rangers’ history too.
“I’d like to thank everyone for their support and their energy,” said CZAR IGOR, in his first reaction to M$GN’s Michelle Gingras – and in another first – the first ever post-game interview conducted at the Rangers’ bench on the network (which has become commonplace elsewhere around the league). (I believe that Carolina started this good-willed practice.)
As far as where this moment personally ranks for #31? Then here’s what Mr. CZAR IGOR, who I should mention, now speaks fluent English, had to say for himself:
“I’d like to wish my fight [vs. Jacob Markstrom last season on 3/26 against the Devils] – but at least no one was punching my face this time!”
In the event that you have been living under a rock – or like me – just wish to relive this moment about once or 78678689679867986786 times more over – then here’s both CZAR IGOR’s historic goal – and his immediate post-game interview with Gingras that followed:

Quickly off puck drop tonight – and I have to make this manifesto brief – as after working until midnight – I now have back-to-back overtime shifts on Friday and Saturday.
By the time that I hit the publish button on this baby, then I’ll have to be up in three-hours.
Heck, it was my original plan, and as noted last time around, to just wait until Sunday and then take time my time when recapping the first four games of the season.
But who can sleep when CZAR IGOR is scoring goals?
Like Jessie Spano once proclaimed – “I’M SO EXCITED!”
What wasn’t exciting?
The Rangers’ first game of the season – a bad and boring Blueshirts’ 3-0 loss to the Bruins.
And to be honest, then going into Thursday night – then I was pretty much expecting a similar result.
That said?
Then I did kind of predict the CZAR IGOR goal prior to tonight’s tilt too:
Igor – after he gets pissed off, skates down the ice and then slams home a puck himself. #nyr https://t.co/FrvczTEFhl
— BlueCollarBlueShirts (@NYCTheMiC) October 1, 2026
Okay – CZAR IGOR wasn’t pissed off, he didn’t skate down the ice, nor did he “slam home a puck” neither – but he did score – so I’m taking credit for this prediction!
And that’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

As noted last time around, then unless something truly significant took place on Tuesday night, when the Rangers fell 3-0 in Boston – then I wasn’t going to write about the game.
After all, I attended my local watering hole’s watch party – which also doubled-up as a Yankees’ watch party against Boston too.
While the Pinstripes easily trounced the Red Sox, it was the complete opposite for the Big Apple hockey team.
If anything, then the best way to describe the Rangers’ first loss of the season was that it was deja vu.
Suffice to say, then the defeat felt like a continuation of last season.
Thankfully, and after two-days of “Who’s projected to go first-overall at the 2027 NHL Entry Draft?”, and the Rangers redeemed themselves with their 5-1 win over the Lightning.
Ironically, while the Blueshirts have been absolutely dreadful, depressing and heartbreaking against the Lightning when it matters most (the playoffs – and in the years of 2015 & 2022 to be specific); then conversely, and even during down years – and the Rangers have had success against the Bolts in early-of-the-season match-ups.
Despite the mess that last year was – and the Rangers, back on 11/12/2025, molly-whopped the Bolts by a 7-3 decision.
Furthermore, then Andrei Vasilevskiy, who may retire as the greatest Russian NHL goalie of all-time, has been bested by his comrade in New York.
Following the Rangers’ opening night win on 10/1 and CZAR IGOR is now 7-3-1 lifetime against “The Cat” in the #88 Tampa jersey.

Since I’m pressed for time, then I really don’t have much else to say about the season-opening loss outside of the fact that Boston won 3-0 after scoring three goals – and with the trio of red lights, one of the empty-net variety, taking place with just less than four-minutes remaining.
(In other words? Then the Rangers, had they held on, could’ve at least gained a point in the standings via a nil-nil score after regulation time.)
To finger-point the defensemen and their turnovers, as many were doing in regards to both Vladislav Gavrikov and Braden Schneider – well be my guest.
But if you’re going to go down that route – then make sure to mention how nobody scored for the Rangers too.
It’s gotta be a two-way street.
After all, then what was Sullen Sully’s game plan for that match?
Pray and hope to win in a shoot-out?
Seriously?
Then, and even in spite of the win tonight – and my feelings haven’t changed on the Rangers’ head coach:
Mike Sullivan is nothing more than a Sidney Crosby merchant.
Those Pittsburgh Penguins won two Stanley Cups because of Crosby & Co. – and not because of anything that Sullivan did – that is – outside of penciling #87 into his line-up.
Furthermore?
Then Sullivan did nothing to help Team USA win the gold either.
Instead and it was red-hot goalie, Connor Hellebuyck – and yep – a few bad Canadian misses at his net too.
We Want Turk!
Before moving on, then let me share with you what I wrote last time around on this site in the event that you missed it:

To catch up on the news (and news that you’re already long aware of by now), and the Rangers, when making their final varsity cuts, placed both Taylor Raddysh and Dylan Garand on waivers.
I won’t rehash all of this – but yeah – placing Garand on waivers was absolutely foolish in my eyes.
Fortunately, The Pepperoni Prince, Rangers’ GM Chris Drury, didn’t have this bone-headed decision back-fire on him like one of his shitty hot-oil pizzas!
Perhaps, and solely due to the fact that every other team in the league were trying to solidify their rosters while also making their varsity team cap complaint – and no one picked up Garand off of waivers.
And what Drury’s obsession is with Joonas Korpisalo is beyond me.
Perhaps the second-worst GM in franchise history (John Ferguson) owns a life insurance policy on the journeyman goalie – and akin to Drury’s alleged status as the biggest stockholder in ZOOM!
Raddysh, like Garand, ultimately cleared waivers.
Also clearing waivers (and as a result – now howlin’ in Hartford) was the injured defenseman, Vincent Iorio.
Following the Rangers’ first loss of the season in Boston, where Korpisalo sat on the bench, then, and after a practice on Wednesday – and come Thursday afternoon – and the Rangers announced that Korpisalo had been placed on the team’s IR with a “week-to-week lower-body injury.”
Of note?
Sullivan later said that he had no clue when Korpisalo sustained his ailment.
In return – and Garand was immediately called-up from Hartford prior to tonight’s home opener without ever skating with the Wolf Pack – and very likely – should stand in-between the pipes in Detroit when the Blueshirts play their second half of a back-to-back on Friday night (which could also be the time when you’re reading these very words)!
This isn’t exactly a “Wally Pipp” situation for GARAND THEFT AUTO – but should he start against a bad Wings’ team at the Pizza Palace in Motown – then go on to have a good game too – then he could force Drury into realizing what we all already know:
GARAND SHOULD BE CZAR IGOR’S BACK-UP!

We may have to retire the “SULLY SQUAWKS” segments on this site.
After all, Sullen Sully doesn’t squawk – instead, he just rambles on-and-on about nothing – while also giving you more word salad than the dim-witted Kamala Harris!
And after last season?
Then I’m sick-and-tired of hearing about what the team has to do, what they are planning to do, what they are dreaming of and blah-blah-blah.
Just do it – and like the team did tonight.
And to be fair?
Then it’s not just Sullivan – as both Captain J.T. Miller and Mopey Mika do the same.
Another thing to be fair about?
Then some of these questions from the Blueshirts’ bird brain beat are so god damn idiotic that it must make their interviewees fall asleep with their eyes wide-open.
That said, then if you want to see-and-hear the head coach prattle on, and in two different interviews conducted prior to Thursday night’s tilt to boot, then you here you go:
Here was Silly Sully’s line-up for the second game of this 84-game 2026-27 campaign:
FIRST LINE: Perreault/Mika/Lafreniere
SECOND LINE: Dorofeyev/Miller/Bjorkstrand
THIRD LINE: Cuylle/Laba/Tolvanen
FOURTH LINE: Kartye/Veleno/Chmelar
FIRST PAIR: Gavrikov/Fox
SECOND PAIR: Pettersson/Durzi
THIRD PAIR: Smits/Schneider
STARTING GOALIE: CZAR IGOR
BACK-UP: Garand
HEALTHY SCRATCHES: Morrow, Robertson and Rempe
IR: Korpisalo
OF NOTE: The only line-up change from Tuesday to Thursday was Chmelar in, Rempe out (and of course, the back-up goalie spot too).
BOX SCORE time.

When it comes to the M$GN pregame show tonight, then I thought that Dave Starman was the best thing on it.
While not a former Ranger, nor NHLer for that matter either, but I enjoy his EYE TEST analysis and breakdowns.
He’s also a Stan Fischler guy, so that means he’s aces in my books! (And I’ve written ten of them!)
What I’ve been saying about “THE KING OF COMMENTARY,” Henrik Lundqvist, now in his second act, remains the same too:
It’s just amazing how M$GN doesn’t feature him more – as it’s the national network, not the regional network, TNT, that gets better usage/mileage out of him.
I will admit, then I guess I was kind of sour going into this game.
Eff it – I was full blown bitter!
After all, the Rangers just had a terrible game against Boston, again, a match that felt like Game 83 of the 2025-26 season – and here was M$GN promoting the Blueshirts’ home barn as an impregnable Fort Knox-like fortress.
While that did wind up the case for at least this very night; but it was also hard to forget that the Rangers were shut-out eight times at M$G last season too – and again – with the Boston loss still freshly baked in mind.
After a pretty much ado about nothing pregame show (and where I must tip my cap to Dave Maloney (my favorite), Kenny Albert, Michelle Gingras and John “FROM THE PROJECTS IN BOONTON” Giannone too); then we had our opening night introductions – and where I’m happy to report that no one tripped over a wire this time either:

Following what was an amazing national anthem (sung by first name Ryan, surname I forgot) in front of both the NYPD and FDNY hockey teams (an excellent touch – the Rangers don’t get much right – but they do get their support of our local heroes correct) – and we were just seconds away from our first puck drop of 42 in front of the Garden Faithful.
Since this will be a brief review (easy for me to say), then I’m going to introduce a new segment to this site for times like these – AN ANY ORDER YOU WANT TO TAKE IT TOP TEN LIST!
1. CZAR IGOR! Duh.
2. The Rangers’ special teams were pretty much flawless – as the penalty kill went a perfect and encouraging 7/7, while the power-play went 1/2. The first man-up unit also scored the first goal of the game and after that – it was pretty much over for the Bolts.
3. The Blueshirts were OUTSTANDING at the dots, winning the battle at the circle to a tune of 35-22 for a 61.4% edge. Captain Miller (11-3) led the way with a 78.6% success rate, while new fourth-line middle-man, Joe Veleno (10-5), went 66.7%.
4. Tye Kartye, my projected 2027 Steven McDonald Extra Award winner (who also was perfect at the circles – 1-0), led the team in hits (5). I just love his game.
5. We all know that I’m not Mika Zibanejad’s biggest fan. DUH! That said, I’m firm but fair. What caught my eye the most about the Swedish-Iranian (and throw away his scoring stats, 1 goal, 1 assist, away, too), was the fact that he was RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF A THIRD PERIOD SCRUM – WITH THE FINAL RESULT ALREADY LONG DETERMINED TO BOOT! I’ve always called out Stinka Zibanedud’s ballerina act, so in the same vein, then I must praise #93 when he does show up for his teammates too. I hope to see this team-first play continue.
6. I don’t care what you think about the plus/minus stat – as I still respect it. My point? Not one Ranger finished with a negative number. Better than that? You know that rookie, Albert Smits, the second-youngest defenseman (Dave Maloney) to ever play with the team? Well the new #12 in town led the way with a +3 in this almighty column!
7. The one blemish on Igor’s record tonight, Nikita Kucherov’s strike, which ended CZAR IGOR’s 3-0 shut-out at the time? It wasn’t even on #31 – as the puck deflected off of Noah Laba. In other words, CZAR IGOR was perfect – and as is often the case.
8. There was never a time where you thought that Tampa would make a game out of this. Much is being said about the short preseason – but like Ron Duguay – and I don’t buy it:
These hockey analysts need to STOP mentioning the shorten training camp as excuses
We all know it was short training camp in which the players loved !!
They could of played another 3 games & it would of not make a difference in game 1 or 3
The players are in great shape
Flying…— Ron Duguay (@RonDuguay10) October 1, 2026
9. That said? Then if the Red Wings look flat against Garand’s Blueshirts’ tomorrow? Then perhaps there is something to these teams having a short training camp! (The Rangers will be playing their third game on Friday night, the Red Wings, their first.)
10. I truly felt this win was a team-wide victory. THERE WAS NOTHING TO PICK AT. And give props to both Gavrikov and new Ranger, Marcus Pettersson, as well. Both led the way in blocked shots (5) – and a tip of the cap to Captain Miller, who via a batted puck, prevented a goal. In all, I just hope this was the start of many highlight team-wide victories – which would be the complete opposite of last season.
Last thought before going into the super-abbreviated GAME REVIEW segment?
My season-long motto, you know, this one:

Game Review time – again, a quick one – and let’s roll!
FIRST PERIOD
After J.T. Miller lost the first draw at M$G this season, the Rangers quickly recovered, and as a result – it was Adam Fox that recorded the first SOG at the Big Apple Barn this campaign.
While the former Norris Trophy winner (2021) didn’t score a goal tonight – he did pick up two huge assists.
If there was anything noticeable at M$G early, then it was the fact that there were a lot of empty seats – and as was evident by the poorly made “HOME OPENER” t-shirts that adorned them.
Try this on for size:
The get in price for tonight’s game at 5PM, two-hours prior to puck drop?
$65.
The get in price for the Knicks’ home opener later this month?
$3,000!
But as I was once told by a Yankees’ beer vendor in 2010, hawking me a $21 tall-boy, in their home opener following their 2009 World Series win:
“Do you want a championship? Then you gotta pay championship prices!”
And guess what – this suds salesman was 100% spot-on – and even if his Budweiser was as flat as a plate of warm piss on a hot summer’s day!
At the 5:01 mark, the Rangers, then on their best shift yet of the game, saw J.J. Moser hold Gabe Perreault.
33-seconds later?
One of the best rearguards in the league, Victor Hedman, lost his stick, Pavel Dorofeyev then rang a puck off the iron, and then on the rebound – blammo – Zibanejad scored the first goal at M$G this season via his 1-0 power-play strike.
(No goal replays tonight – I gotta be fully alert for my labor-intensive job tomorrow/today!)
Following first blood, CZAR IGOR prevented another case of “SAME OLD RANGERS” – as he didn’t allow a John Carlson-to-Brayden Point tip-try to go in some few nanoseconds later.
At the 8:20 mark, the Bolts received their first of seven power-plays when Braden Schneider held Brandon Hagel.
I know that many Ranger fans want Schneider ran out of town – but I still remain in support, devout at that, of #4.
That said?
And this silly penalty just gave the Schneider Hate Crew more fuel for their engines – warranted or not.
But guess what?
Then, and in another example of about 7867867986967867986986 them – and the Rangers exhibited TEAM WIDE PLAY – and didn’t allow the Bolts to even-up the score.
It was also around this time when Miller batted a puck before it could cross CZAR IGOR’s crease too.
That’s leadership – and much needed leadership at that.
Another instance of team-wide play?
Then, and in our first of two instances, then following a Rangers’ penalty kill – and the Blueshirts increased their lead.
At the 10:51 mark and Dorofeyev took a headman pass from another new face in town, Oliver Bjorkstand, and then beat Vasilevskiy for the 2-0 red-light job.
This was very encouraging to say the least.
Down to 6:29 remaining and Will Cuylle was the second of seven Rangers to take a penalty – and as he did when he held Ilya Mikheyev.
End result?
A perfect 2/2 penalty kill – and where it should be mentioned that among the fourteen man-down minutes that the Rangers took – and CZAR IGOR racked up a total of eight short-handed saves.
Down to 2:00 remaining and Sean Durzi almost created fear in every corner of Rangerstown, USA – as he pushed Point right into CZAR IGOR.
As you know by now – and CZAR IGOR, who has had a litany of chronic injuries over the years, bounced back up.
WHEW!
As far as anything else, then with 21.3 seconds to go and CZAR IGOR made a Joe Micheletti “FABULOUS” save on a Jake Guentzel to Erik Cernak 2 x 1 odd-man rush try.
2-0, GOOD GUYS, after twenty.
Here’s what I said at the time:
2-0, Rangers, after 20.
1P Thoughts:
Couldn’t have asked for a better start – SOG favor #NYR too, 7-6.
Special teams are perfect 3/3 – one PPG, two kills.
Nice to see the FAT CATS get on the board.
Many turnovers, but guys are playing for each other.
Will we have a SAME OLD RANGERS ending, or a new Blueshirts’ beginning?

SECOND PERIOD
The Rangers continued to average two goals a period after this frame was played.
At just the 1:40 mark, Laba found another new Ranger, Eeli Tolvanen, for his first Blueshirt goal.
Tampa bench boss, Jon Cooper, used his timeout after this goal – as he wanted some time to review it.
Upon further review – he decided not to challenge the score – as the puck actually bounced off one of his skater’s blades – and it wasn’t a kicking motion by Tolvanen either.
End result?
Rangers field goal, Tampa goose egg.
In the first of several instances, then at just the 2:07 mark and the Rangers’ fourth line and third pair had a 5 x 5 scrum against the big boys in Bolt jerseys.
I love this stuff.
FIGHT – and fight for each other too!
Following this mini melee, and both Schneider and Jeff Viel were boxed for off-setting roughing minors, thus giving us 2:00 of foreplay (4×4).
If there was anything to gripe about, and this is nitpicking at its finest, then it was when Alexis Lafreniere (no points) couldn’t score on another breakaway try – this time of the backhanded variety – and as he did at the 3:30 mark.
As Albert and Maloney continued to hype up Smits (again, a team-high +3), then at the 7:59 mark, and this is when Kucherov scored his backhanded goal off of Laba’s skate.
3-1 – and where Tampa, who looked flat all game, finally showed some life.
But as was the case prior to this goal – then after it – and CZAR IGOR just Jack Kevorkian’d the life out of Rangers’ foes.
As the Blueshirts continued to pay homage and respect both the FDNY and NYPD (I always love this); then down to 7:09 remaining and Miller went to the sin bin for a “YA MOMMA” penalty – hooking – as he had hooked Anthony Cirelli.
After CZAR IGOR used his nads and jock strap to deny Carlson of a power-play goal, the Blueshirts’ PK then finished as a perfect 3/3 at the time.
This is when we had some deja vu, as just like the Dorofeyev 2-0 strike, then once returned to full-strength and this is when Gabe Perreault, after deflecting a puck shot from the point from Fox, put the Rangers ahead by a 4-1 tally – and as he did with just 3:59 remaining.
As both Veleno and Tolvanen came close to scoring, the score remained 4-1, GOOD GUYS, after forty-minutes.
Here’s what I said at the time:
2P Thoughts:
— Very refreshing – didn’t expect this at all.
— Rangers special teams remain perfect.
— Back-to-back kills lead to goals.
— Big names and young guns all on the board.
— Can’t even blame Igor for the goal allowed (deflection off Laba’s skate).
—- Finish!

THIRD PERIOD
The Bolts had a chance to make a comeback out of this – and as they did at the 25-second mark when they returned to the power-play, following a holding call on Miller (Cernak).
The Blueshirts didn’t only go 4/4 on the PK here – but they also didn’t allow a SOG either.
Down to 16:26 remaining, Lafreniere drew the second-and-last Rangers’ power-play of the game – as Moser had tripped him.
No goal here – but it did burn two-minutes off of the clock with a Rangers’ three-goal lead.
Once returned to full-strength the Blueshirts’ third-line trio broke up a great Tampa scoring chance with 13:30 left to play
Down to 10:56 on the clock, and Fox gave the Bolts their fifth power-play – as he tripped Mikheyev.
During this kill and this is when CZAR IGOR, after stopping Cirelli, saw his first line center, Zibanejad, involved in a physical scrum.
Again – I bury Mika when he plays like shit – so I must praise him for showing some valor and balls here.
Down to 8:59 remaining and Tampa had their sixth power-play – and a three-second two man-up advantage too (Laba, delay of game).
End result?
A flawless 6/6 Rangers’ PK.
Down to 8:00 remaining and this is when Cooper pulled Vasilevskiy for the first of three times.
Unable to score on this 6 x 4, Cooper returned AV to the net once we came back to five vs five play.
It was also at this time when we heard the first of many (and rightful) “IGOR’S BETTER!” chants.
And with 2:34 to go – and with Tampa’s net empty yet again?
Let’s run it back – the 5-1 Rangers’ goal:
HE DID IT!!!!
Igor Shesterkin scores the first goalie goal in @NYRangers history!@TheGarden went absolutely BONKERS!!! #NYR pic.twitter.com/3wqu29IGCt
— Joe Tolleson (@joetolleson) October 2, 2026
For those keeping track?
Then following the best Rangers’ goal in years – and CZAR IGOR is now on pace for a 42 goal season!
WE WANT THE ROCKET RICHARD!
The only thing left mentioning is that the Rangers’ penalty kill officially went 7/7 after Durzi went to the box for a delay of game call (puck over glass, just like Laba’s penalty) with just 57-seconds remaining in regulation.
Officially, then CZAR IGOR, Dorofeyev and Mika went down as your top three stars of the game – and respectively at that.
My eyes?
I would’ve given CZAR IGOR two of them – and then the entire team the third one!
This was as good of a win as any that you’ll see – and hyperbole be damned – perhaps the most memorable.
After all, we’re now in Year 101 – and we just saw our first Ranger goalie score a goal!
Perhaps for an encore, and Garand will do the same!

Sorry for going so short tonight (5,000 words is short for me!); but alas real life and work beckons!
That said?
For as down as I am about the team’s future this season – then I enjoyed every minute of this – and the fact that CZAR IGOR finally scored just warmed my black and dark heart too!
As you may also know by now from reading my buddy Stan Fischler, then both the Young and Younger Maven have a big-time $1 bet on the Rangers’ fortunes this season – where the original Maven (Stan) and the bootleg Maven (yours truly) are wagering where the team finishes.
Fischler has the Blueshirts reaching the post-season.
Despite tonight’s win – and I do not.
One more “that said?”
Then I hope that I owe Fischler a George Washington greenback come early April of 2027!
No matter what?
Then this was one of the best team-wide wins that you’ll ever see.
Up next:
No rest for the weary as the Rangers return in Detroit on Friday night.
Of Note: The abnormal 6:30PM start time on TNT.
Programming Note: As mentioned, I’m working a lot of hours, including an early and unorthodox (for me) Saturday AM shift.
As a result, then unless Garand scores a hat trick – and bangs a few ice girls too – then no GAME REVIEW blog afterwards.
Instead, I’ll be back Sunday night, win-or-lose, on Vincent Trocheck return night – as the Blueshirts, after their one-night stay in Motown, will then return to M$G on 10/4 when they host the Utah Mormons.
Also win-or-lose?
Then I’ll definitely be back after the first Rangers/Islanders tilt of the season, as the Blueshirts, following the Mammoth, will then host the nomadic Baby Brothers on Tuesday, 10/6.
Also “up next?”
