NYR/EDM 3:16 Review: Rangers Fail To Protect Wild Card Berth; Get “Diddy’d” Via Late Oil Spill, No More Luxuries, Bozo The Bench Boss Refuses To Make Power-Play Adjustments; Special Teams Swing Games (Again), Don’t Blame The Refs (But They Stunk Too), Strong Defense; No Offense From The Fat Cats, M$GN & More

One night removed from taking full control over their playoff fate – and POOF – it’s now gone some 24-hours later. Following their team-wide 4-0 win in Columbus on Saturday night, the Rangers, who once again did put forth a valiant effort throughout this Sunday night tilt, dropped a 3-1 decision at home to the struggling Edmonton Oilers. In my eyes, then I thought that the Blueshirts played well enough to win – but due to all of their previous follies and losses this season – and there’s no such thing as “moral victories” anymore. While there’s also been an uptick in the Rangers’ overall game – but at the same time – there’s still a lot of the same old shit smeared all over it – including a dreadful power-play – and the fact that this team, who entered this match on a two-game winning streak, still haven’t been able to win three in a row since Veteran’s Day.

Greetings and salutations everyone and welcome to another blog here on BlueCollarBlueShirts.com. Now this was to be expected.

After all, and as discussed last night (https://bluecollarblueshirts.com/31525/ ) – and these 2024-25 New York Rangers have been incapable of winning three straight since mid-November.

Furthermore?

Then if I’ve said it once on this site, then I’ve said it 798678686798689679869 times, you know, the following:

“I refuse to allow the Rangers’ Rug to be pulled out from underneath my feet ever again.”

This is my way of telling you that YES, and resoundingly so, that Saturday night’s win in Columbus was one of the best, if not the best, victory of the season.

But this franchise always creates heartbreak – which is why I wasn’t expecting anything different against an Oiler squad that hasn’t been the same ever since the Four Nations tournament concluded.

It’s just in the Rangers’ DNA – give you all of the hope in the world – and then only to kick ya right in the nuts soon after.

Another prediction?

Then don’t be surprised if this campaign comes down to Game 82 – the final match left on the regular season schedule – and where for more dramatics – the Rangers made a comeback in the standings during Games 80 and 81 after blowing their present second wild-card seed.

And come that date, April 17th at home against Tampa – then don’t be surprised either when the Lightning “bolt” the Blueshirts right out of the playoffs.

Can anyone truly, and with good faith, argue otherwise?

I hate to say I told you so – but yeah: After everyone, including M$GN commentators, Sam Rosen and Joe Micheletti, were defiantly proclaiming that “ALEXIS LAFRENIERE IS BACK” – and only because he scored a fluky goal against Columbus – and his first goal scored since the Biden Handlers’ Administration – and #13 (zero points, 1 SOG) was once again offensively invisible in his next game played. Conversely, Will Cuylle, the runaway favorite for this year’s Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award, remains consistent – and he was also the “Lone Ranger” to beat Oil goalie, Stuart Skinner, on Sunday. Photo Credit: Getty Images

There are two ways to look at Sunday night’s 3-1 loss.

From the glass half-full perspective, then the Rangers, despite the defeat, did play well.

Until the latter minutes of the contest – then they didn’t allow Connor McDavid, the greatest player of his generation, to record one SOG – and such a feat also includes four separate Oiler power-plays.

Speaking of, and the Rangers’ penalty kill went 3-4 whenever a man-down and the one goal surrendered was pretty much a “right place and at the right time” moment for Mr. Bedard Corey Perry.

Defensively, and the Rangers were just a hair short of successfully executing the similar performance that they had 24-hours ago, which was during their complete team-wide effort win against Columbus.

And of course, and should you believe in such things, then this was an on-paper “scheduled loss” – as the Rangers were not only traveling on this second half of a back-to-back set – but this game also marked their sixth game played in nine nights – while the Oilers had a full day of rest when entering this match.

But now for the reality – the glass half-empty perspective:

Due to all of the losing, where to their credit, they have been able to fight into playoff contention despite a 4-15 stretch in the middle of the season – then as a result – and the Rangers no longer have the luxury of saying any tripe, including “scheduled losses” and “moral victories.”

Simply put – and every point matters – and especially for this team that’s pissed points away like a St. Patrick’s Day drunk pissing out green beer from his pee hole.

(And let’s hope that the pee hole isn’t green either. “OH JOE, THE CLAP JOE!”)

I mean, just think about it:

Had the Rangers not been blown out by the worst team in the East, the Buffalo Sabres, and twice at that, and in addition, had not lost to many other bad teams of the league including Nashville and Chicago – then you’d just chalk up this loss to the schedule – and especially since a playoff spot would have been long safe and secure under such circumstances.

But that’s from the realm of “coulda, woulda, shoulda” – and not from the real-world either.

A lot of what’s been plaguing the Blueshirts in all of these routine losses once again reared in its ugly head on Sunday night.

The power-play, 0-3 during this affair, remains brutal.

Worse than that is the fact that Bozo The Bench Boss refuses to make any adjustments on a man-up group that’s now 2-32 since returning from Four Nations.

I know, I know, I know – I’m like a broken record – but it must be repeated:

WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO LOSE BY PUTTING MATT REMPE OUT THERE?

Once again, not only was Rempe as effective as ever, even coming this-close to scoring a breakaway goal – but he remains benched whenever the Rangers employ their man-up attack.

Going hand-in-hand with this is how Peter Lateralette just has no clue whenever trying to make adjustments – and he’s always adamant in remaining stubborn in his ways.

After all, it was clear as day that J.T. Miller was experiencing an off-night in this one – and where his frustrations bled throughout the tilt too – and as his two penalties taken – and all of his missed shots too, would suggest.

And when chasing a goal late?

Then that’s when Laviolette decided to staple his only scorer of the game to the bench, Will Cuylle – and in favor of Missing Mika.

Make it make sense.

Elsewhere, and CZAR IGOR, who entered this contest at 4-0 whenever making back-to-back starts; wasn’t at his best either.

While he wasn’t terrible, he should’ve been able to stop the Oilers’ 2-1 goal, a score that wound up becoming the game-winner too – and where once again – he was out-played by another peer of the barrel.

CZAR IGOR, who went 20/23 for a .870 save percentage, was shown up by former back-up-turned-starter, Stuart “SEYMOUR” Skinner, as the Oil’s netminder went 21/22 for a .955 save percentage.

And of course – where were the FAT CATS – who must’ve thought that only showing up once this weekend was required.

As noted, Cuylle scored a goal for the Rangers and that was it.

Despite three power-plays and the most ice time received too – and OO-GATZ from the likes of Panarin, Zibanejad, Kreider, Fox, Trocheck and Lafreniere.

More noticeable than the highest-paid players in blue?

The likes of Cuylle, Rempe, Brodzinski and Othmann – as once again – the Rangers reverted right back to their old ways – fourth-liners and role-players had to do all of the heavy lifting.

I’m not exaggerating when trying to make my case when I say this: The fourth line was more noticeable and offensively aggressive than any other line tonight. But to be nice, then I thought that every player looked strong on defense – but you can’t win if you can’t score. Photo Credit: NYR

I hate to sound so down after a loss like this – because really – the Rangers did look good.

Some may say that the schedule forced them to run out of gas – but I don’t even think that was the case either – and especially not during the final half of the game when the Blueshirts had a huge second wind of non-stop attacks.

But they just couldn’t beat Skinner.

Despite the 3-1 result and the word of the day at M$G was “DEFENSE” – as the Rangers bottled up the two best players in the game today – Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid.

The Rangers had a chance to take a lead early, as at the 1:08 mark, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was questionably assessed with a slashing infraction committed on Trocheck.

Heck, let me make it clear – this wasn’t a penalty – and just like the last two fake news penalties assessed to Rempe (against Winnipeg and Minnesota).

This was referee error – which sadly – was a common theme throughout this tilt – and where both sides faced the brunt of it.

Despite this gift – and the Rangers’ power-play, while looking good (J.T. Miller even hit a post), didn’t finish the job.

You can look good and fail from time-to-time – but when you only have two power-play goals in your last thirty tries – then you need Sam Rosen to shriek out his famous catchphrase.

After the Rangers’ power outage, the Oilers had the next three in succession – and where on their first two man-up attempts – the Blueshirts’ elite penalty kill stopped them – as the league’s fourth-best penalty kill dominated the league’s fifth-best power-play.

With just 1:07 remaining, a questionable hooking penalty was assessed to K’Andre Miller.

Previous to this, and Jeff Skinner, who drew Miller here, had also drawn Jones for the same thing – while selling the call like a pro wrestler.

But that’s what Skinner should be doing for his team – but it’s also something that the refs had to have a keen eye for as well.

After all, it’s their job.

Also worth noting prior to this third Oiler power-play?

The fact that Trocheck had gotten away with a trip.

In other words, the officials had erred four times – but it all evened out – as they erred in favor of either side twice.

It was their fourth mistake of this period that burnt the Blueshirts.

With Miller in the box, the Oilers, who just couldn’t get anything out of #29 and #97, soon saw Corey Perry, on a rebound, go down on one knee and backhand a puck past CZAR IGOR – and on a shot that the goalie never had a chance on.

1-0, visitors, and with only 43-seconds remaining in the period.

(Of note: Because Draisaitil passed the puck to Nugent-Hopkins, which then set up Perry’s rebound, then the Big German got an assist. But make no bones about it – the Blueshirts did a phenomenal job when preventing him from becoming a difference maker.)

Trailing 1-0 when opening the second period – and the Oilers went right back to work – as the Rangers, and as is very often the case, where extremely weak at even-strength.

However, and at the 5:00 mark cleanly – and Cuylle, on a 3 x 2 rush, was able to beat Skinner for the equalizer.

But as you already know – that was it for the Rangers’ offense on this night.

In fact, there wasn’t that much offense throughout – as both teams looked tremendous on defense.

Heck, the only time a goalie saw a double-digit total in SOG was in the first period, as the Oilers sent ten shots CZAR IGOR’s way, while the Rangers sent seven towards Skinner.

The second stanza featured a 8-6 SOG total, in favor of the home team, while each club finished with seven shots on goal a piece in the third-and-final period.

However, it were the Oilers who scored on two of their final seven SOG.

At the 6:09 mark of the do-or-die third period – and Viktor Arvidsson, on a 3 x 2 odd-man rush, was able to beat CZAR IGOR – and perhaps with a tip of the cap to Zac Jones too – who changed the trajectory of the puck by tipping it as the Oiler had shot the puck.

2-1 – and in favor of Glen Sather’s first team – and the one he still pulls for today.

And while Jones did get a tiny piece of the rubber – but needless to say – and CZAR IGOR should have stopped this bad angle shot.

As M$G got deathly quiet – but then again – it was largely silent throughout; as we hit the 9:13 mark, then the Rangers received a good chance to tie it – as Skinner was boxed for cross-checking Big Billy Borgen.

What happened next was a chaotic seven-minutes of hockey – and it wasn’t until there was only three-minutes and change remaining when we had our mandated TV timeout of the period.

The Rangers failed on their power-play – their usual modus-operandi.

But they did continue to release various attacks – but the Oilers were able to defend them all.

And just as you were thinking about when CZAR IGOR would be pulled for an extra attacker – and boom – and with only 3:25 remaining – McDavid, withheld from a SOG – scored on his first-and-only shot of the game.

3-1, Oil.

That sound you heard at the time?

About 18,000 of the 18,006 Garden patrons hitting the exits.

Now down by two – and I’m not exaggerating – and the Rangers had about a dozen chances to trim the Oilers’ lead to one.

But this is when Skinner, already solid, saved his best for last – and where the only condolence prize for “Lavy’s Lot” was the fact that they didn’t surrender an empty net goal during the final 2:45.

But they did surrender a chance to pad their lead in the standings, as following this loss, and the updated standings now look like this:

While the Rangers retained their second wild-card seed after this 3-1 loss, they also gave up their games-in-hand advantage too. Should the Blue Jackets triumph on Monday (at home against the Devils), then they will regain possession of the spot. Montreal, hot on the Rangers’ heels, could also jump them should they prevail in their next game, which is Tuesday night when they host the Senators. As noted above – and I expect this all to become finalized once Game 82 rolls around – and not a day or game earlier than that! Photo Credit: ESPN

Here is our 82-game mantra, which is also known as my 33-word daily disclaimer, that I post on this site after every game played:

“WHATEVER THE RANGERS DO FROM NOW UNTIL THE TRADE DEADLINE DOESN’T MATTER. THEY CAN ONLY BE JUDGED BY WHATEVER THEY DO FOLLOWING THE DEADLINE AND BY WHAT THEY DO IN THE 2025 PLAYOFFS!”

In other words, sixty-eight down, fourteen to go, and then the real hockey, the only games that matter, begin.

But at this rate – will the Rangers even be there for the real hockey?

Magic Eight Ball is now saying “who knows?”

In case you missed it, then here’s where I last left off – one of the best team wins of the season in Columbus:

NYR/CBJ 3/15 Review: Flawless Victory! Blueshirts Pass Biggest Test Yet; Regain Full Control Over Playoff Fate, A Winning “Blueprint” Achieved – FAT CATS Feast; Role-Players Beast, Another 4-0 Shutout For CZAR IGOR, Interesting Healthy Scratches, No JD/Rosen Reunion – But Maybe on 3/22, McDavid Next & More

Let’s say it again: I hope this spot is replaced by “Q’s Corner” next season!

Since the Rangers played last night in Columbus, then there was no morning skate on Sunday – and for that matter – no news to speak of either.

The only thing of note was the one thing that most of us predicted – CZAR IGOR would receive his first true back-to-back start of the season – or his first back-to-back start following a win.

(He previously had done so twice during this campaign – but only after being pulled in two losses.)

For whatever reason, and only Jonny Lazarus, the only Blueshirts’ beat reporter that does a good job, covered this game, which in turn, meant that Laviolette had easy press conferences.

I bring this up only to say that the line-up remained the same – and we didn’t get an update on Arthur Kaliyev either – but really – while you care about the human being – I don’t care about him ever returning to this team again.

Here was Laviolette’s line-up for the sixty-eighth game of this 2024-25 season:

FIRST LINE: Panarin/Trocheck/Cuylle

SECOND LINE: Lafreniere/Miller/Mika

THIRD LINE: Kreider/Carrick/Berard

FOURTH LINE: Othmann/Brodzinski/Rempe

FIRST PAIR: Miller/Borgen

SECOND PAIR: Vaakanainen/Fox

THIRD PAIR: Jones/Schneider

STARTING GOALIE: CZAR IGOR

BACK UP GOALIE: Quick

LTIR: Adam Edstrom

INJURED: Arthur Kaliyev

HEALTHY SCRATCHES: Calvin de Haan, Carson Soucy and Juuse Parssinen

In an update to last night’s blog, then I am being told from someone in the know that John Davidson should be at M$G on 3/22 for the Rangers’ sendoff of Sam Rosen. I was also told this BEFORE commercials plugging this event aired on M$GN tonight – and ads that featured JD. However, I haven’t been told yet if Rosen will get a banner raising ceremony or not – but like many (read my first book for all of it) – and he most certainly deserves such an honor. Photo Credit: M$GN

Two things happened at 6:30PM for me.

The first was when I tuned into the M$GN – and despite Henrik Lundqvist in-attendance (as part of his M$G Ambassador duties) – he wasn’t featured during the broadcast.

In turn, and with Sieve Vagistat left to his own devices – I put the TV on mute – and especially when I got a phone call.

The call?

My boss at the real j-o-b on the line – and one who requested of me to work a double-shift on Monday.

This is my way of telling you that I don’t have the time to do a full-length GAME REVIEW tonight – but I’ll still give you more about this game than anyone else will!

(For my complete play-by-play of this match, then check out my Tweeter/X feed here: https://x.com/NYCTheMiC )

And while my boss wouldn’t say it outright – then I think he wants me to come in early – and not use the “Irish Flu”/St. Patrick’s Day holiday as an excuse to call in sick – and especially not with three of my co-workers already using it!

As you all know by now – then I sure do love my pops, belts, beers and shots!

But as a true Irish-American – then I don’t need a holiday to drink – as I do pretty well for myself the other 364 or so days of the year!

Furthermore?

I’m also hoping that Donald Trump, once he enacts the no tax on overtime law, makes it retroactive!

Hey – a boy can dream – and just like how I’ve been dreaming of seeing this team win a second Stanley Cup in my lifetime during the past 31-years!

At 7:00 PM, I returned to the M$GN, and where I promptly heard the following:

“OH JOE, THE OILERS JOE! THERE USED TO BE A LOT OF BABY OIL AT THE P. DIDDY PARTIES I USED TO GO TO! WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THAT BAD BOY FOR LIFE ANYWAY JOE?”

If you haven’t figured it out already – then yes – I am making this up.

However, just the idea of Sam Rosen attending a P.Diddy oil/sex party has me crying with laughter.

“OH JOE, ORGIES JOE!”

And have I mentioned yet that I’m truly going to miss Sam when he’s gone?

Heck, he takes up 99.9% of my comedic relief material – and we’re not going to get all of the “Rosenism’s” once Kenny Albert takes over next season either.

It’s now time for the (truncated) GAME REVIEW.

Let’s roll.

I thought that K’Andre Miller, who will most likely get paid by the Rangers this summer, did a fantastic job tonight – that is – sans for his lone muff on McDavid’s goal. Sadly – and that’s what many are focusing on right now. However, then for the previous 56-or-so minutes prior to McDavid’s 3-1 goal – and Miller did a beyond phenomenal job of limiting him – as every time #97 entered the zone – and there was #79 ushering him to the boards. It’s been an up-and-down season for Miller – and in a way – we saw both sides of that tonight too.

FIRST PERIOD

In what I haven’t mentioned yet – and tonight’s M$GN broadcast was a “SPOTLIGHT GAME” – and our first of the season too.

Off the top of my head, and during the previous five times that M$GN has done this (Panarin, Fox, Trocheck, Mika and Kreider come to mind – as there may have been more) – and the Rangers never won during any of these “special” broadcasts.

You can make it at least 0-6 after this “SHESTERKIN SPOTLIGHT.”

As we hit the ten-minute mark of this game, and with each team 0-1 on their power-play too – and both squads only had two SOG to their names – which just speaks to how much defense was a priority.

Come 8:37 remaining, and J.T. Miller, who has just been a penalty machine of late (for the second time this week he took at least two penalties in one game), was boxed for interfering with McDavid.

But as noted – and the Rangers’ PK remained as strong as U.S. steel – and not that Chinese shit!

As we hit five-minutes remaining – and the Rangers only had 3 SOG to their name – and this was also around the time when Trocheck got away with a trip – and a trip so blatant that #16 stopped skating – as he was expecting the whistle.

But unlike Rosen at a P. Diddy party – and it never came.

As Micheletti, and for whatever reason, was telling us “The Calgary Flames work hard Sam,” Rosen responded by promoting “WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT NIGHT,” and where I was half-expecting him to say, “The first 10,000 women in-attendance will receive Ranger colored nail polish Joe!”

(This bad joke is made only because the Rangers gave out fanny packs on “Pride Night” – and by now – you probably know the rhyming alternative name, a derogatory one at that, for such stomach-wear.)

After Sam and Joe talked about the Oilers’ trade for Jake Walman no less than ten-times, then with 1:07 to go, this is when Miller was falsely accused of hooking Skinner.

And after that, this is when Corey Perry capitalized:

1-0, bad guys.

And that’s how we remained come the end of the first period.

Here’s what I said at the time:

I thought that Adam Fox was more noticeable tonight than as he was a night before, in his first game back since his suspected broken collarbone injury. Heck, he even logged a game-high 24:26 – but the quarterback of PP1 couldn’t rectify the Rangers’ issues with man-up time. Photo Credit: NYR

SECOND PERIOD

As Rosen brought up that the Oilers were the best second period team in the league (most goals, best goal differential); then we were also told that Kris Knoblauch, one-time coach of the Hartford Wolfpack, bench boss of Edmonton today, had a positive private conversation with his former AHL charge, Matt Rempe.

And come the end of the period?

It were the Rangers that took some piss out of the Oilers’ second period stats – as they finished with a net gain of +1 – and as Cuylle did at the 5:00 mark:

This was a huge goal – as prior to it – and the Oilers had dominated the puck.

A defensive play, a hit from Trocheck on Brown, started it – and this Cuylle goal was also the Rangers’ first SOG of the period too.

No less than two-minutes later – and Matt Rempe almost blew the roof off of M$G:

As friend of the site, Linda H., told me:

“SECREMPETARIAT!”

And some people, morons, will still tell you that “REMPE IS JUST A GOON!”

By the way he was skating on this breakaway – and with the Rangers most likely going nowhere this Spring – and Rempe may as well enter himself in the horse racing Triple Crown – as he raced like a thoroughbred – while also kicking up mud – or should I say ice – in every Oiler’s face!

It’s just a shame that Bart Simpson’s foil, Seymour Skinner, was able to make the timely save.

In addition while on Rempe?

Then it was a shame that on this date, AUSTIN 3:16, that Rempe didn’t drop the gloves.

But then again – fighting is only part of his game – and contrary to popular belief – fighting isn’t what defines him!

J. Miller took his second penalty of the game with 12:48 to go, as he airmailed a puck over the glass.

But again – and the Rangers’ PK was extremely formidable – and where just like how Miller was frustrated in the box – and both McDavid & Draisaitl looked frustrated against the Blueshirts’ man-down teams too.

With 7:12 to go, Vasily Podkolzin hooked JONNY BROADWAY – as once again – the former captain of the Pack only has the directions of north and south on his hockey compass.

But despite the fourth liners and Cuylle dictating offensive play – and they didn’t get any power-play time here.

We remained tied at one-all through forty-minutes.

Here’s what I said at the time:

We all know that CZAR IGOR is my guy – but even I must admit – he wasn’t better than Skinner tonight.

THIRD PERIOD

This was a weird period – as the Rangers came out slow, gave up a goal, then got hot, but only to see McDavid put them away.

At the 6:09 mark – Arvidsson’s goal – and what wound up holding up as the game-winner too:

2-1, bad guys – and Igor, despite Jones’ tip, has to stop this.

And while this goal was also the end result of an Oilers’ odd-man rush – it should also be stated that they didn’t have many of them throughout these sixty-minutes – but they scored when they got them.

At the 6:39 mark, U.V. was stopped by Skinner – which is only worth noting because this was the first Rangers’ SOG of the frame – which again – speaks to the defense – and the lack of Blueshirts’ offense too.

After this, and Lavy hit the line blender – and where Mika, Panarin and Miller had a good & long shift spent in the Oiler zone – but of course – no goal to come out of it either.

From this point on, and for about nine-minutes or so – just non-stop action – but which unfortunately concluded with McDavid’s insurance goal:

3-1, Oil – and with only 3:25 left on the clock.

Igor was pulled with 2:40 remaining – but as noted throughout this tome – the Rangers, whenever a man-up, stink – but they did prevent the Oilers from tripling them up on the scoreboard.

3-1, Oilers, your final.

Normally, this wouldn’t be considered as a bad loss – but as stated numerous times – and as you’re all keenly aware of too – and points are precious in these parts.

The Rangers will host Calgary next. Photo Credit: M$GN

Up Next For the Rangers: An off-day on Monday, followed by a game on Tuesday against Calgary.

The Flames previously doused the Blueshirts, 3-2 this season, back on 11/21.

“Lavy’s Lot” will have an advantage this time around, as not only are they at home, but Calgary will be in Toronto on Monday night.

Prior to their game against the Leafs and the Flames are 4-3-3 in their last ten games played, and losers in their last two.

They, and just like the Rangers, are battling for a second wild-card seed – although and duh – in the West as opposed to the East.

Up Next For Me: Bed time, followed by a long work day where I’ll try to carve some time for some corned beef and potatoes – and where the beer will have to wait until the wee hours of Tuesday morning!
