NYR/BOS 9/23 Review: Same Old Rangers! Sully’s Squad Give Up Four Unanswered; Fall in OT – But There’s A Lot of Good To Talk About Too (Baby Buck Blueshirts Beam Bright!), Adam Fox Mars a Bunch of Strong Performances & Robs Many Positive Lede Stories; Perreault and Laba Shine Again, The T.F.W. Law Firm Makes His Case, Kenny Albert & Dave “Riiiiiiight” Maloney Make The M$GN Transition Absolutely Flawless; A “FABULOUS” Broadcast, Giacomin & More

As was the case on Sunday afternoon against the Devils, then come Tuesday night, some 55-hours later, and now at M$G when hosting the Bruins –  and the Rangers once again took a three-goal advantage into the third period. Leading 4-1 with only twenty-minutes left to play and the Blueshirts once again defined – and not defied – the age-old smart remark of “the dreaded three-goal lead.” While we all know about the disclaimer of “it’s only the preseason”; what was most concerning about this loss was that it was the team’s best skater dressed for this match, the 2021 Norris Trophy winner*, Adam Fox, who buried the Blueshirts’ chances of winning. (The asterisk used here is because his lone Norris win took place during the 56-game 2021 COVID campaign, where he played the same seven teams eight-times a piece.) Due to the loss, Fox’s poor play gets top billing here – but don’t get it twisted either – as there is also plenty of stuff to rave about too (Noah Laba, Gabe Perreault, Jackson Dorrington, Scott Morrow, Brett Berard, etc) – or at least from the first forty-minutes of this game!

Greetings and salutations everyone and welcome to another blog here on BlueCollarBlueShirts.com. It wasn’t a very Happy New Year for Adam Fox.

And for all of my Jewish friends and readers – then I hope that you had a better Rosh Hashanah on Tuesday night than Fox did!

Had I started tonight’s manifesto around 9PMish or so, and had completely forgone the entire third period as well, then the tone of this tome would have shined brighter than the heat of a thousand suns.

The Rangers, up 4-1 over the Bruins through forty-minutes of play, looked like world-beaters out there.

(And just to get it out of the way – then here’s your last disclaimer for the night – “it’s only the preseason and blah blah blah.”)

What was so remarkable about the Rangers’ performance (at the time) was that it was a bevy of young bucks, including Gabe Perreault, Brett Berard, Noah Laba, Scott Morrow and Jackson Dorrington, that were doing the majority of the heavy lifting.

(And a thank you to @NYRLouie on Elon Musk’s app, the only Lou on Rangers’ Tweeter/X that matters, for giving me information on some of these young players that I’m not really too familiar with. While I’ll never agree with his opinions about analytics, we can still talk civilly – and as noted here – learn from each other too! If only politicians, and from both ends of the aisle, had this same mindset!)

Elsewhere, and very reminiscent to Sunday’s win in New Jersey, and the Blueshirts also got strong showings out of fringe veterans looking to make Mike Sullivan’s final cut too – and where the law firm, the man whose name sounds like a steakhouse as well, Trey Fix-Wolansky, took top honors.

Also identical when comparing this second game of the preseason to the first one?

Another bad (or to lessen the blow – “unnoticeable”) performance out of Brennan Othmann – although he was most certainly improved during this go-around. (After all – there was nowhere else to go but up! And yep – no suspension following his actions late in the win against the Devils too.)

Furthermore, and when it comes to ranking these prospects?

Not only are the likes of Perreault and Berard ahead of the previously “untouchable” Othmann (that 2024 trade deadline will be the death of me), but the same now goes for Laba.

(And if we are to assume that this preseason/training camp is solely a merit-based competition – then Othmann, and like last season, will begin the 2025-26 campaign in Hartford.)

Hartford may suck for Othmann, but he may be forced to swallow another demotion to the Wolf Pack once the regular season commences.

Down 1-0 at the 8:30 mark following a bang-bang play (Casey Mittlestadt to Matej “Who?” Blumel) – the Rangers answered right back – as Trey Fix-Wolansky, following a hell of a feed from Brett Berard, beat B’s goalie, Joonas Korpisalo, some 44-seconds later for the 1-1 equalizer.

This T.F.W. goal kick-started what eventually would become four unanswered Ranger goals, as the Blueshirts kicked a field goal in the middle period – following a Perreault rip-job, Sam Carrick capitalizing off of a turnover by using his Wayne Gretzkyesque hands and new-comer, Vladislav Gavrikov, beating Korpisalo while short-handed.

Up 4-1 at the second intermission – and Ranger fans had their chests pumped out a bit.

It only took less than twenty-minutes to deflate these chests.

In a third period where the veteran Rangers – and not the YOUTS – never really showed any desperation and were often buried in their own zone too – and it was #23, Mr. Fox, who kicked off the Boston comeback.

Fox, whose name sparked hot debate this off-season in regards to where he should be ranked among all NHL defensemen, proved his doubters correct tonight.

The alleged power-play quarterback (but at least he’s not alleged to be a serial sexual assaulter – which is not something that you can say about everyone on this team) coughed up a puck while the Rangers were “enjoying” a power-play/man-advantage.

A few seconds later, and the former Tampa Bay Bolt, now in Boston, Michael Eyssimont, beat Talyn Boyko for the 4-2 shorty.

About four-minutes later, and now at even-strength – and Eyssimont beat Boyko again – this time with a wrist shot for the 4-3 goal with 8:49 remaining.

We’ll get into these goals below – but once Eyssimont brought this game within one-goal (and his performance just induced negative memories from Rangers’ past – or to be specific – the Lightning’s routine playoff success against our beloved Blueshirts) – and you just knew it in your gut that it was only a matter of time.

(I know my that my pal, Laura K., also had the same feeling!)

That time finally came when there were only 65-seconds remaining in regulation, as the B’s, now with the extra attacker on the ice, and Korpisalo on the bench too, saw Eyssimont score his third unanswered point, following his set-up for teammate Marat “Try To Spell My Last Name Without Googling It” Khusnutdinov.

What once was 4-1, Rangers, was now a 4-4 tie.

Adding to the angina was when Fox, with only twenty-seconds remaining, coughed up another turnover.

Boyko made a huge 2 x 1 save in order to preserve the tied score – while also bailing out Fox in the process.

Enter Eyssimont once more, as this time, and with only fifteen-seconds remaining, drew Carrick for a cross-checking penalty.

This Boston power-play, which soon spilled into the bonus time, saw the Rangers get pinned into their own zone for nearly the majority of it – as only a Gavrikov clear, with twenty-seconds remaining on the penalty kill, thwarted a B’s attack which also included an almighty <DING>.

The Blueshirts, who only had one possession in the overtime, couldn’t do much with it.

And with only 1:33 remaining from a shootout – and Nikita Zadorov deaded that idea following his wrist shot goal against Boyko – and a goalie who deserved much better tonight – as despite his four goals allowed – it is impossible to solely put all of the blame on him.

We know what these games are, but for a M$GN broadcast (excellent tonight – more below) that kept on pushing a motto of “forget about last year” – a loss like this one won’t give you dementia any time soon in regards to one of the worst seasons in franchise history (2024-25).

The fact that Fox was the biggest culprit in the loss will serve as only a reminder of how bad last season truly was.

I mean, had it been a BABY BUCK BLUESHIRT that cost the Rangers the game, then you’d just chalk it up as a learning experience and move on.

And while we will move on (and get out of this extended intro too), you also can’t forget about Fox’s not-up-to-snuff 2024-25 campaign – and where this time around – you can’t make the injury excuse (his knees) anymore either.

The Rangers will be honoring Eddie Giacomin this season with #1 decals on their helmets. However, and unlike the Rod Gilbert #7 shoulder patch that the team wore a few years ago – and there will be no Giacomin patch on the Rangers’ jerseys this year. After all – advertising comes first (Messier’s Game 7 company). Photo Credit: NYR

Just a few notes about the M$GN broadcast tonight before continuing:

— I thought that the entire broadcast was excellent. I’ll bring up a few things below, but both Kenny Albert and Dave Maloney made the transition from Sam Rosen and Joe Micheletti absolutely seamless.

— But for now, and Albert, arguably the best play-by-play man in the game, was superior. There was no, “OH DAVE, SAVE BY IGOR, OH WAIT, THAT PUCK WENT IN DAVE!” commentary – or any of the other senile moments that the grandfatherly Sam Rosen regularly experienced during his final years on-air.

— This is not a shot at Mr. Fabulous, government name Joe Micheletti – as I grew to enjoy “Jumpin’ Joe” – and especially even more so when Henrik Lundqvist retired/left the organization.

(Micheletti was more honest about the team rather than making excuses.)

However, what I’ve been saying for years proved true tonight – as Maloney, a TRUE BLUE RANGER, gave us countless (and enjoyable) war stories about the team. Micheletti, never a Blueshirt, couldn’t do as such.

(I’ve always felt that Micheletti would’ve been better in-studio – and when speaking of him – I do wish him the best of luck – as he’s had a lot of tragedy in his life in recent years.)

— The Maloney/Albert partnership, one that’s now twenty-years-old, really came across our screens – and as any regular radio listener could attest to.

While we never got one of Maloney’s (in)famous “TULLAMORE, TULLAMORE, TULLAMORE DEW” ad reads (and where the Irishman always sings along with them with a full brogue) – we did have Albert ribbing Maloney about the former captain’s never-ending “homerism.”

(And I love the fact that Maloney remains as Blueshirts’ biased as ever! NEVER CHANGE!)

— Once again, and I was reminded how the Blueshirts really fail to educate their fans about their history.

Tonight, M$GN aired two separate video packages in tribute to Giacomin.

My usual talking point?

It’s just a shame, and despite 7867667986 cable channels and social media mediums – that the Rangers don’t release documentaries – ala the Yankees/YES and their “Yankeeography” series.

— Congratulations to Michelle Gingras, who became a first-time mother this off-season.

Maloney made note of this and while she wasn’t there tonight, he also inferred that she’d be back later on during the regular season.

— Anytime that you don’t see Sieve Vagistat on your screen is a good thing – and this was a broadcast that didn’t feature the worst back-up goalie in franchise history.

— Last but not least, and it only took the M$GN about twenty-years to catch up to everyone else – as they are now running a Shots On Goal counter on their score bug this season.

Progress!

In case you missed it, then you can find my Rangers/Devils 9/21 game review here:

The players that Sullivan used on Tuesday night. Photo Credit: NYR

Here was Sullivan’s line-up for game two of six preseason matches:

FIRST LINE: Cuylle/Parssinenn/Perreault

(Along with the other odd-numbered line, arguably the best trio on the ice.)

SECOND LINE: Othmann/Dowling/Brisson

(Not one player was noticeable – although Othmann blocked a shot that some people made a big deal over – and as if nobody else on the team is able to block shots.)

THIRD LINE:  Berard/Laba/Fix-Wolanski

(OUTSTANDING! Berard and Laba, along with Perreault, is going to keep Sullivan awake at night – as all three of these guys are making their cases for a roster spot. Furthermore, and like Conor Sheary on Sunday – and T.F.W. also made a strong argument for a roster spot as a veteran utility player.)

FOURTH LINE: Sykora/Carrick/Chmelar

Carrick was a force to be reckoned with. I didn’t even notice his wingers – and where if it wasn’t for the disappointing Othmann – then you might hear some chatter about Sykora right now. That said, and it should be mentioned that Sykora doesn’t get the same TOI as Othmann.)

FIRST PAIR: Gavrikov/Fox

(Gavrikov was great. Fox, not so much.)

SECOND PAIR: Robertson/Sustr

(Robertson didn’t look so hot on the game-winner and I don’t know why Sustr is even here.)

THIRD PAIR: Dorrington/Morrow

(Easily, and hands-down at that, the best defensive duo on the ice.)

STARTING GOALIE: CZAR IGOR

(Went 10/11 in nearly 30-minutes played – and the one goal allowed wasn’t on him either.)

BACK UP GOALIE: Boyko

(Add him to a long list of Blueshirt backstops that have been disappointed with the team in front of him while in the barrel.)

SPARES: Blidh, Hillman and Garand

No offense to Sam & Joe (and I’ll still honor them on this site too) – but I’ve been waiting for this moment for years. Photo Credit: M$GN. Assist: Michael S.

FIRST PERIOD

After (rightfully – and doing a good job of doing so too) the Rangers honored Eddie Giacomin, we finally had our first home puck drop of the preseason.

I should also mention that both Albert & Maloney sang the praises of their predecessors too – and it was nothing but pure class to boot.

(And perhaps only Michael S. cares about the announcing/broadcasting stuff as much as I do! Heck, he may care even more – and I respect him for it!)

Nearly two-minutes into the game and CZAR IGOR made his first of ten eventual stops, and where this initial save wasn’t easy either, as he gloved a quick bang-bang Boston one-timer.

Brett Berard, who I think is all of 175-pounds and who stands at 5’8″, displayed his toughness at around the 3:50 mark – as he ate a huge hit from Eyssimont.

This hit was so vicious that had Filip Chytil ate it  – then he’d spend the next six-months in a dark room.

Instead, Berard popped right back up – and then had one hell of a game too.

Eight-minutes into the match and the Rangers were without a SOG – and even with the top-five (first line and first pair) having long stays in the Boston zone.

And right after that?

Then this is when Blumel, who snuck behind the Rangers’ defense, took a puck from Casey At The Bat and then tapped a puck home past CZAR IGOR.

Even Helen Keller could’ve scored after this pass.

1-0, bad guys.

Right after that?

A rapid Rangers’ response – and a funny one at that – that is, if you compare Berard and T.F.W. (5’7″, 185-pounds) to the two giants we saw last game – Matt Rempe and Dylan Roobroeck.

Here’s Berard setting-up an unafraid-of-contact T.F.W. for the 1-1 score:

As the broadcast continued, and I’ve made jest of it before (I LOVE THE GUY – DON’T TAKE THIS AS A SHOT AT HIM), and it was apparent that if you took a Tullamore Dew shot for every time Dave Maloney says the word “right” (and in his distinct tone too) – then you’d have a blood alcohol content level that would surpass the entire Delta Tau Chi fraternity from Animal House.

In other words?

“Riiiiiiiiiiiiight” has replaced the word “FABULOUS” on these M$GN broadcasts!

Berard, already with an apple to his basket, almost had a goal too – but a good lookin’ shot of his was blocked.

Even so, and it was nice to see him shoot at an open net rather than dicking around with the puck like Stinka Zibanedud always does.

The B’s had a little flurry during the latter stages of this frame, as with about five-minutes remaining, the SOG score bug read as 6-2, home team. About ninety-seconds later and each side had six SOG a piece.

Come the final horn and we remained with the 1-1 stat where it mattered most – the scoreboard.

Here’s what I said at the time:

The Rangers may want to look into Stridex or Clearasil as sponsors with all of these young players on the roster! Laba, who had a secondary assist on T.F.W.’s goal, later assisted on Gavrikov’s short-handed tally. Photo Credit: NYR

SECOND PERIOD

During the first intermission, and with John Giannone asking the questions, Gavrikov raved about the Rangers. He called the franchise (and M$G) “iconic” and said that he always wanted to play here.

I gotta say – you can’t argue with the guy – as he definitely put his money where his mouth was this summer – and when he took less money to come here when opposed to what he could’ve earned on the open market.

And right before puck drop of this middle frame?

My normal stupid Sam and Joe parody tweet:

And just three-minutes-and-change into the period – and that’s what happened:

2-1, GOOD GUYS – and what a hell of a rip for a Perreault, who at this point, can’t be sent to Hartford right now.

I forgot to mention this earlier, but prior to the broadcast – and Maloney was talking to Albert about the Rangers’ prospects and where they rank.

Similar to most of us, and Maloney had it as Perreault first, Berard second and Othmann third.

(Maloney didn’t use the word “distant” in front of the word “third” – but I will!)

Maloney and Albert (and if you haven’t already figured it out – then I’m a huge mark for both of them), also had this interesting exchange when talking about a game from Blueshirts’ history, one that Maloney played in – and one where the Rangers also gave up eleven-goals:

Albert: “You guys gave up eleven-goals that night, how in the world did you finish that game with a +1 in the box score?”

Maloney: “I knew how to get off of the ice!”

Little stuff like this entertains me big-time – and these two brought it all-game.

This banter was also another example of what I’ve been saying for years – not only is Maloney a walking Rangers’ encyclopedia (and not many have a better recall than Albert either) – but he’s able to give us stories from franchise history – and that’s the stuff that’s right in my wheelhouse.

Another interesting fact?

Maloney has now been associated with this franchise for 50-years – or half of their existence.

Frank Boucher who?

I KID, I MOST CERTAINLY KID!!!!

(Retire #7!)

Maloney, an eye-test guy like yours truly, made mention of something that I said last season – Carrick was arguably the best Ranger of last-season – and especially when you factor-in the salary cap into the equation.

(You can also argue for Will Cuylle – but it’s only these two names, and maybe Jonathan Quick, a goalie, too, that are in the conversation.)

Why was Maloney talking about Carrick?

It was because Carrick looked like his former teammate in Edmonton, Connor McDavid, following this turnover-into-silky-mitts bang-bang 3-1, GOOD GUYS, goal:

Hell of a play for Carrick!

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again:

I’m not high on Juuso Parssinen at all.

What am I getting at?

Easy:

If it were up to me (and we all know that it’s not), then I’d have Carrick as my third line center come Opening Night.

With Carrick off of the assumed-and-projected fourth line, I’d then go with a full NEW YORK GIANTS (and/or BIG BLUE) line of Edstrom/Roobroeck/Rempe.

I don’t see the Rangers doing much this year, so if you give me a shit-kicking fourth-line of Frankenstein monsters, then I’ll be fine (and entertained too) by that!

I was also fine (and entertained too) by what happened next.

At the 10:39 mark, Parsinnen took a (soft) penalty for “roughing” – as during some incidental contact – the helmet of Steeves popped off.

About thirty-seconds later?

Gavrikov’s unofficial first goal as a Ranger – and a shorty to boot:

4-1, GOOD GUYS.

And go figure – Gavrikov is supposed to be your stay-at-home defenseman, while Fox is (allegedly) the second coming of Brian Leetch.

Just to say it – and Gavrikov was light-years ahead of Fox on this night.

Now up by three-goals, and where we thought at the time that the eventual winner of this game was now decided; and Maloney, when talking about the recent and sad deaths of Ken Dryden, Eddie Giacomin and Bernie Parent, brought up Dryden’s first book, entitled “The Game.”

I only found this amusing because I reviewed this book, published in the early 1980s, here: http://bluecollarblueshirts.com/8317/

Why the chuckle?

Because Maloney didn’t mention another book released during that same time period – one exclusively dedicated to the Rangers at that, “Thin Ice.”

And why won’t Maloney mention Ratso Sloman’s book?

Your answer can be found here: http://bluecollarblueshirts.com/thinice/

We remained at 4-1, GOOD GUYS, after two-periods.

Here’s what I said at the time:

This picture was a fan-favorite last time – so let’s play it again – Adam Fox was this much ASS on Tuesday night. Photo Credit: Unknown

THIRD PERIOD

Gross.

Boyko, who came into the game at the half-way mark, hadn’t given up a goal at this juncture.

He’d then give up four straight – and while the Rangers couldn’t do anything to protect their lead at all.

After M$GN opened up this period with a camera shot of David Quinn on the bench (he’s a better man than me – as I could never forgive Mika Zibanejad and that ilk for getting me fired); Laba, one of the best Blueshirts on this night, and already with two assists to his name, came close to scoring a goal himself.

And had he done just that – then we wouldn’t be talking about Fox’s gaffes.

(And in no way, shape or form am I blaming Laba at all for this loss. So let’s be clear about that!)

With every fan in-attendance riding feel-good emotions, and the same goes for the spectators on television too, then at the time, I wrote the following on Twitter/X:

“Forget the past?”

How about this one:

“Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it” – and doomed the Rangers would soon be.

Refer to tonight’s intro for all of it, but here’s the quick-and-dirty:

— Eyssimont, 4-2, following his short-handed goal that was all on Fox after a god-awful turnover.

— Eyssimont, once more, 4-3, after his easy roof-job goal – the end result of an elongated Bruins’ shift in the Rangers’ zone.

— I should mention, and because I’m putting Fox into the fire, that Eyssimont’s second was the end result of a Dorrington turnover. But even so – the B’s were in the zone for about minute – as no one could clear the puck.

— And as also noted earlier – then I’m fine with young guys making mistakes in the preseason. And while I’m fine with veterans working out their kinks too – this game just didn’t help all of the negative opinions on Fox that cascaded throughout last season and into the summer.

— Maloney, when talking about the new Fox/Gavrikov pairing, brought up how Carol Vadnais once helped him out. Again, just another Rangers’ war story from lore that I appreciated.

— The Bruins tied it with 65-seconds remaining.

— They almost won it with 15-seconds remaining, but Boyko saved Fox from having two turnovers for two goals allowed.

4-4.

Here’s what I said as we hit overtime:

OVERTIME

Yuck.

The Rangers spent all of Carrick’s penalty in their own zone – and while they got the benefit of a <DING> that didn’t go into their net – they couldn’t stop the Bruins either.

Once Carrick returned to the game, he made a few plays to keep the puck on the right end of the ice – but no one could capitalize.

And once the Bruins returned to the Rangers’ zone – bang – that was it, as Zadorov scored the 5-4, bad guys, walk-off winner.

Yuck.

The Rangers will host the Islanders next, and as they will on Thursday night (9/25). Photo Credit: NHL

A few quick notes before going home:

— Look at me. All-summer and I said that I don’t know how much longer that I’ll be doing this. In turn? I’ve written 6,000 words a piece about two preseason games!

— I guessed that I missed hockey much more than I’d like to admit.

— You know me. I’m a history guy – and not a prospects guy – and I’ve explained all of this before too. That said, and I’m really excited when watching Perreault, Laba and Berard (who I’m most familiar with).

— However, and I just don’t see it with Othmann at all. If he wasn’t young, then he’d be jettisoned to Switzerland – and just like the much more accomplished (and better) Jimmy Vesey is today.

— Assaultin’ Artie is currently day-to-day. I really don’t care about these daily injuries as if it’s not serious, then it will be nothing to worry about come the regular season.

— Another thing that I don’t care about? Roster cuts – and as I explained last blog. After all, there are only 2-3 roster spots up for grabs and it’s only the final cut that will matter.

— I take no joy in dumping on Fox. Heck, he’s one of my favorite players. But I must be fair-and-true too – and ever since his multiple knee injuries – and he hasn’t been the same since. As I always like to say on this site – these three-words – “PROVE ME WRONG!”

— I still can’t get into Sullivan as a coach at all. Maybe that will change as the season progresses, but until then, he remains as a Chris Drury “nepo” hire to me.

— With a third of the preseason complete, then I’m to assume that we’ll start seeing more of the regulars – and where I expect to see the FAT CATS on Thursday (because it’s a home game).

I am working Thursday night at the real j-o-b, but if I can get the time, then I’ll return here with a Rangers/Islanders review.

If not, then back over the weekend.

And of course, and with all of that said too, this now brings us to your favorite segment…

  1. The same old Rangers like last year. Have they not learned its a 60 minute game, not 40 ugg. I hope Mike put the hammer down and said unacceptable, I will not stand for this.

  2. Hey Sean good to have you back. My first Rangers coach was Red Sullivan. The first game I went to was on a Sunday night vs Toronto in 1963. Johnny Bower vs Marcel Paille. The Rangers lost 10-1. I remember joking that instead of watching Ed Sullivan that Sunday I would be watching Red Sullivan and the NYR. Anyway, wouldn’t it be funny if my first and last coaches were Sullivans?
