NYR/PITT 10/11 Review: Blueshirts Get Revenge; Sully’s Squad Smashes & Smackdowns Penguins, Complete Team-Wide Effort – And a Near FLAWLESS VICTORY Too, Mika Actually Gets Involved in Scrums; First “Rangers’ Responder” As Well, Eleven Forwards Pick Up Points; Fox Pots Two, LABAMANIA Runnin’ Wild, CZAR IGOR Continues Master Class in N(y)et, Trocheck & Soucy Injured, Vagistat Turns Trump Orange; Return of The King, M$GN & More

Three games into this 2025-26 campaign and the Rangers, who just shutout the pathetic Buffalo Sabres 48-hours prior to Saturday night’s 6-1 win in Pittsburgh, now have their first team-wide “WIN OF THE SEASON” candidate. Following a slow start, the Blueshirts then put a touchdown on the board – and with everyone contributing – while also scoring every which way possible too – via the penalty kill, the power-play and at even-strength. And had “The Muse” in the Steel City decided to pull Arturs Silovs when down five goals in the third period? Then CZAR IGOR probably would have scored an empty-netter too!

Greetings and salutations everyone and welcome to another blog here on BlueCollarBlueShirts.com. Saturday night’s level of competition aside – then it’s going to be tough for the Rangers to top themselves following their 6-1 smackdown in Pittsburgh.

But of course, and with only three games played into this 82-game season – then the Rangers will need to top this method of victory – and many times over at that.

The Rangers, who entered the land where weak Primanti Brothers sandwiches reign supreme (I’ve had them and they are disgusting), were not only seeking revenge following their home-opening shutout loss (3-0) to these same Penguins – but they were also looking to get a win for their returning bench boss too.

By the end of the night, not only did Mike Sullivan emerge victorious in his homecoming, but better than that – and he couldn’t have received a better showing from everyone that he skated in this match.

In short – then unlike the home-opener – and the Blueshirts rose to the occasion when avenging Tuesday night.

This 6-1 win was as dominating as you could imagine – so much so – then let’s just get the negative stuff out of the way first – then sing the Rangers’ praises for the remainder of this manifesto.

(And as you’ll see below – all of this negative stuff are extreme stretches.)

— Vincent Trocheck, who as mentioned last time around in this space, is injured. While no one knows what his injury is, but if you recall, then following the 4-0 win in Buffalo – and both Sullivan and Alexis Lafreniere made it sound like that #16 would be missing significant time.

— On Saturday morning, during the A.M. skate, and the Rangers announced that Trocheck was currently “week-to-week with an upper-body injury.”

— And yes – of every major sports entity in the world – and only the NHL allows this vague information act to continue – and despite their 79838438343949595 gambling sponsors/ads/commercials that are bombarded onto us with every game played.

— As the Rangers were marching forward to their 6-1 win; then early into the game, and Carson Soucy, when trying to hit “Rakell, Rakell, The Musical,” lost an edge and then subsequently (great SAT word) landed head-first on the ice. He was immediately removed from the game afterwards – and where a concussion was suspected (and as mentioned with Trocheck – we are only left to speculate injuries since the NHL won’t confirm them).

— In other words, and after losing 3-0 to these same Penguins on M$G ice just five-nights ago – and the Rangers were without both Trocheck and Soucy. However, and obviously, this isn’t a true negative either (duh) – as the Rangers rallied around their fallen – and rallied big-time these Blueshirts did.

— The only Blueshirt forward not to join the scoring party was ironically, and of all people, Lafreniere. After scoring the game-winner in Buffalo and while celebrating his 24th birthday in Pittsburgh – and #13 couldn’t get on the board.

— Last but not least – and Sieve Vagistat, who looked like he had slept in a tanning bed, as his skin was bright Donald Trump orange, was back on M$GN airwaves.

CZAR IGOR continues to dominate in net – and where as noted last time around – he’s now looking to succeed Connor Hellebuyck this season as a Hart Trophy winning goalie. The man pictured next to him here? Noah Laba – who not only picked up his first NHL point on Saturday – but who also picked up his first multi-point game too, following his two assists. Photo Credit: NYR

Domination, smackdown, annihilation or whatever other adjective that you want to use here – and this game was all of that – if not more – for the Rangers.

And knowing all of the circumstances when entering this tilt – then come the final horn, you were left asking yourself this one question:

“How in the hell did the Rangers lose their home-opener to these guys?”

If you’re a fan of real stats – and not the junk that Sieve Vagistat makes-up – then this 6-1 win was a doozy.

I mean, just check out the player box score:

I could’ve highlighted about 17 players for tonight’s blog header photo, but I chose Rempe for two reasons. One, just to stick it up the asses of all his haters, and two, because it would take too long to make photo cuts/edits of every Ranger skater (and goalie)! Photo Credit: ESPN

Call it a feeling out process, call it a slow start, call it whatever you want; but the first period of tonight’s match wasn’t exactly that exciting for the Rangers.

After all, they only had four shots on goal to the Penguins’ nine – and where two of the shots accredited to Sully’s Squad shouldn’t have been ruled as SOG in the first place (pucks that were sent high or wide).

If the official NHL scorers had done their job correctly, then the Rangers would have left this period with only two SOG – and with only one of them being of the five-vs-five variety.

The other shot?

A Stinka Zibanedud short-handed goal at the 7:40 mark.

During the first Rangers’ PK of the game, where they eventually went 4-4, thus boosting their season total to 9-9 – and there was Adam Fox, from his own end, to spring Sam Carrick.

On the two-vs-one short-handed rush that ensued – and BLAMMO – Carrick fed the Swedish-Iranian-Palestine supporter for the 1-0, GOOD GUYS, goal.

Not even Mental Mika could shoot this perfectly fed puck high-and-wide!

(And yes – not even a Mika goal will make me go back on everything that I’ve previously said about him. I’m happy that he scored as it helps the Rangers – but I’d still trade him tomorrow for a bag of pucks – as that way – it would get the worst contract in hockey off of the Blueshirts’ books.)

Despite Zibanedud’s breaking of the ice – then it still felt like the Penguins had the edge when entering the second period.

Such feelings felt confirmed at the time, when just 3:04 into the middle frame and the new eighteen-year-old rookie in black-and-yellow, Ben Kindel, capitalized off a turnover and then beat CZAR IGOR off of his own rush.

1-1.

Up next?

Five unanswered Ranger goals!

Fox, perhaps a fugazi Norris Trophy winner (and only because he won it in 2021 during the 56-game season where he played against the same seven-teams), is doing his best when trying to win his first Norris Trophy during an 82-game season.

At the 6:06 mark, Fox, who scored an empty-netter against Buffalo, scored his first “real” goal of the season, following another wicked wrist shot.

2-1, GOOD GUYS – and your eventual game-winning goal too.

The Blueshirts’ power-play, a major weakness last season, then scored two goals themselves – and from each unit too.

At the 9:25 mark, and with a penalty on Kindel set to expire – and Cuylle made short work of Silovs following a tape-to-tape pass from PTO Sheary.

Equally as enjoyable?

The fact that Noah Laba picked up his first NHL point, a power-play point at that, as he was accredited with the second helper.

3-1, GOOD GUYS.

Following this goal – and the Rangers killing their third Pittsburgh power-play of the game too; then at the 16:33 mark, and because of Silovs coming way out of his own net when playing a puck – and the Pens were busted for Vagistat’s favorite bedroom activity – too many men.

Five-seconds later?

A J.T. Miller faceoff win, a dish to Panarin and a pass to Fox for the 4-1, GOOD GUYS, power-play goal.

Come the end of the period, and with this 4-1 score still in-tact?

Then the tide had turned in the SOG department too, as after the Penguins had out-shot the Rangers 9-4 in the first period, the Blueshirts then flipped the script with their powerful 14-3 showing.

In other words – Fox scored two goals in the second period while the Penguins only mustered three pucks towards the direction of a playing-out-of-his-mind – and all-worldly too – CZAR IGOR.

The good times rolled right into the final frame.

The Rangers’ fourth forward trio, Adam Edstrom, Sam Carrick and Matt Rempe, arguably the franchise’s greatest strength last season (which of course – doesn’t say much about that 2024-25 team either), continued to shine while also contending for “best fourth-line in the league” status.

All game long and there was Rempe crashing nets.

All game long and there was Edstrom getting to the net.

All game long and there was Carrick killing penalties and creating short-handed scoring chances.

And at the 5:40 mark of this third-and-last period – and there was a PURE FOURTH LINE MAGIC goal – as during a mad rush at Silov’s net – and Rempe, while fighting off Pens’ d-man Ryan Shea, was credited for a goal as an Edstrom shot had bounced off of his chest.

Picking up the secondary assist?

Yep you know it – Carrick – who as a result – now had two-points to his name.

5-1, GOOD GUYS.

A thrown together third line, due to the Trocheck injury, saw Taylor Raddysh, Noah Laba and Juuse Parssinen skate together for the first time this season.

Funny enough – while the top-six could never score an even-strength goal tonight – this line – and just like the fourth line – did.

In a play that was all Laba Gas, no breaks – and the rookie set up Raddysh for his first score as a Ranger.

6-1, GOOD GUYS.

And it wasn’t all about the offense either.

The Rangers, with thirty hits (Pens had only fourteen), twelve blocked shots and eight takeaways, also limited the Penguins to nineteen shots on goal.

Kindel worked hard on his individual effort goal, but aside from that, and there were two other times where the Penguins had a puck trickle by Shestyorkin – and each time, there was the top d-pair, Fox and Gavrikov, to swipe a loose puck away before the rubber had a chance to cross the goal line.

In other words?

Not only a team-wide effort – but a monster defensive effort as well, which of course, goes hand-in-hand with the dominating offensive effort!

Holy Efforts Batman!

This was as perfect of a win as possible, and especially when you consider the fact that the other team is paid to play hockey too.

But of course, and the result of the home-opener aside – and the Penguins aren’t projected to be very good this season either.

However, you can only play the team that’s next up on the schedule.

Two tough tests are up next – the first two real tests of the season at that – but more about them below.

Before getting into everything else, then here’s where I last left off on this site:

NYR/BUF 10/9 Review: Rangers Rebound With a Four-Zip Shutout Against The Forever a Loser Sabres – But a Win’s Still a Win, CZAR IGOR Carries Blueshirts; Lafreniere’s “Hang It In The Louvre” Goal, Trocheck Injured; Doesn’t Sound Good, Captain J.T. Puts Up Two-Points; Nada For Zibanedud, The Gotham Sports Crap, The Summer of ’26 That Wasn’t, NDArtemi Assaults With An Apple, Shesterkin Revenge Season, Fourth Line Dominance, M$GN & More

The Rangers never uploaded Sullivan’s pregame comments to their YouTube channel but he said what you’d expect him to say – he enjoyed his time in Pittsburgh, he has great memories there, but he’s now in New York and he wants to win the Cup here.

Following the win in Buffalo, then come Friday – and the team had the day off.

As noted above, then it was on Saturday morning when the news of Trocheck’s injury became official – he’ll be out for at least a week – and perhaps even longer than that.

While the Rangers didn’t say this, but it should be said that the Zoom Zoom Pizza Makin’ GM, Chris Drury, doesn’t have much cap space available.

Since the Blueshirts are already carrying 23-players, then no cap space is accruing.

In other words, then don’t expect a call-up of Brett Berard or Gabe Perreault anytime soon – and not with two spares already on the roster (Parssinen, who played tonight, and Jonny Brodzinski).

Furthermore, and following the events from Saturday night – and we don’t know the status of Soucy just yet either.

However, Matt Robertson is still here and with two home games ahead, then it’s unlikely that defensive help from Hartford will be sought.

(In other words, if the Rangers were on the road, and most certainly on the west coast, then they would have called up a spare d-man.)

Here was Sully’s line-up for the third game of this 2025-26 season:

FIRST LINE: Lafreniere/Zibanejad/Panarin

SECOND LINE: Cuylle/Miller/Sheary

THIRD LINE: Parssinen/Laba/Raddysh

FOURTH LINE: Edstrom/Carrick/Rempe

FIRST PAIR: Gavrikov/Fox

SECOND PAIR: Soucy/Borgen

THIRD PAIR: Vaakanainen/Schneider

STARTING GOALIE: CZAR IGOR

BACK UP GOALIE: Jonathan Quick

HEALTHY SCRATCHES: Jonny Brodzinski and Matt Robertson

WEEK-TO-WEEK BUT NOT ON IR: Trocheck

The only reason I left the M$GN pregame show on my TV tonight was because “THE KING OF COMMENTARY,” Henrik Lundqvist, an eye-test man himself, was there. Sadly, Vagistat was also there – and he must’ve said the words “east-west” and “expected” about 7766789687967976798 times. Thankfully, Notre Dame football was also on at the same time, so I was able to mute my other TV whenever the seven-foot fairy was rambling on-and-on.

As usual, and even when Vagistat is there – and I’ll always leave the M$GN pregame show on whenever Lundqvist is sitting in his usual middle seat.

I can’t believe it’s been five-years either – but yeah – while I was the loudest critic of his final contract – I’m also one of his biggest fans in his new role as an analyst (and where I think he’s featured much better on TNT too).

(And I’ve said this before, but I’ll say it again since this is a new season too: It feels great, at least for me personally, to have that contract talk washed away from both me and this site. Despite contrarian opinion – and I never enjoyed burying his final contract – and I take more joy in praising his work as an analyst than I did whenever talking about his final years as a Ranger.)

When it comes to the M$GN as a whole, then John Giannone and Dave “RIIIIIIIGHT” Maloney had the call, as Kenny Albert will continue his NFL commitments until the football season ends.

With Giannone in Pittsburgh, then Bill “150-Seconds – And My Wife Hates That” Pidto, did double-duty, as he ran the desk while also doing his very entertaining – and now famous – intermission segments.

After Vagistat had said that “Lafreniere is very close with Panarin” (and where I was hoping that this didn’t mean that Lafreniere will be ALLEGEDLY drugging and sexually assaulting women anytime soon), then Lundqvist stressed the importance of Zibanejad getting out of the gate hot.

Since Vagistat kept talking over Lundqvist, then this is when I muted my TV – and in favor of the eventual Notre Dame win.

Once N.D. emerged victorious, then the broadcast moved over to a new Blueshirts’ Bar segment – as the previous sponsor, the tranny fluid known as Bud Light, has now been replaced with Michelob Ultra No Taste/All-Water Light.

Seriously, can’t we get a Labatt BLUEshirts bar?

At least I have that at my local watering hole!

Finally, and in one of my usual “I CAN’T STAND MIKA” pregame tweets, then I sent out the following prior to puck drop:

While I still can’t over Mika’s ballerina act from last season; then to tell you that he was bad tonight would be a complete fallacy. In fact, he was quite the opposite – very good – and in all three zones.

By the end of the game?

Then even I, someone who can’t stand Zibanedud more than most, must admit that #93, and vastly at that, out-played #87.

(Furthermore? Then at least I won’t reach to you when trying to sell my own narratives – and unlike the Rempe Haters who still talk shit about the big man after a game like this! Me? Then I’ll always tell you what it is!)

Seriously – and I can’t remember the last time when the Rangers and Penguins played two consecutive games and not only was Crosby a non-factor – but neither was Shrek Malkin – that is – unless you count Geno’s three, and god-awful at that, turnovers.

And since I have no problem kicking Mika whenever he is down, then I must add this high-praise too:

Remember how I shared that clip last season (and into the summer too), and no less than 7985678967879867896869869 zillion times over at that, of Zibanejad doing his figure skating routine against the Devils while his four teammates were brawling?

Then there were three scrums tonight between the Rangers and the Penguins.

Mika was not only involved in all three of them – but the first Rangers’ responder too.

It will take a lot for him to win me over (and not like it matters to him anyway) – but I tip my cap to him – or at least for this one game.

Now do it again – and again – and again – and you get my point – and also do it against the real heavyweights of this league too.

GAME REVIEW time – and since I covered most of this already, and with a quick turnaround (at home vs. Washington at 7PM Sunday), then let’s just do the bullet-point style.

Following two-years of back-to-back knee injuries – and I think that it’s now safe to assume that Adam Fox is 100% healthy. Happy to see it! Photo Credit: NYR

FIRST PERIOD

— As noted above, then not much transpired this period – or at least not from a Rangers’ offensive/goal scoring aspect.

— If anything shocked me early, then it was the fact that there were a ton of empty seats at the (Penguins Scored No) PPG Arena. What a sign of the times.

— At the 4:30 mark, CZAR IGOR had two saves, while U.V. prevented an odd-man rush Kindel chance.

— A minute later, and in his first of three terrible turnovers – and Malkin, when wide-open and in front of Igor – decided to pass instead. No SOG, no scoring chance and a crisis averted for the Blueshirts too.

— A minute after that and Dewar (too bad his surname isn’t “Tullamore” – and just for the Maloney ad reads) created a turnover – and a breakaway too – but CZAR IGOR wasn’t having any of that junk.

— Parsinnen took the first Rangers’ penalty of the game with 12:43 remaining. Prior to the Pens’ PP commencing and this is when the black-and-yellow gave Mike Sullivan a “touching” (as it only lasted for ten-seconds) tribute.

— That said – and I can’t see Ranger fans giving Lateralette a tribute like this. Hell, they won’t even give Drury this same respect either!

— 23-seconds into the Rangers’ kill?

Mika’s first of the season – and while I’m not trying to take anything away from here – this goal was more about Fox’s outlet pass – and Carrick’s perfect feed too:

— 1-0, GOOD GUYS – and a big goal for Mika too – as I was expecting him to airmail this puck into the 21st row.

— The Rangers’ PK, following the goal, became 1-1 – and with their first shorty (they scored 18 of them last year – but Chris Kreider – who scored two massive goals in the Ducks 7-6 win on Saturday night, isn’t here anymore) of the season.

— Down to 6:23 remaining, and after a few more CZAR IGOR saves too – and Gavrikov was boxed for holding.

— End result of this second Blueshirts’ PK? 2-2 – and no SOG allowed either.

— No joke – and I’m not talking shit here either – and it felt like the Penguins were scared, if not shitting in their britches too, whenever approaching the ravishing Russian in the #31 sweater.

— After what felt like seven or eight minutes of no SOG hockey, CZAR IGOR made his final save of the period with 21.3 seconds remaining (Dewar).

1-0, GOOD GUYS, after one period.

Here’s what I said at the time:

DAY ONE!

SECOND PERIOD

As you may have noticed – then I’m keeping the memories of Sam Rosen and Joe Micheletti alive in the Twitterverse – and as was evident by this tweet of mine:

While the Rempe goal would have to wait until the third period – but hey – close enough!

— Following another Malkin turnover, the fourth line continued to dominate, as they spent their first shift of this frame by attacking Silovs and Co.

— But once the Miller line came on – an attempted Gavrikov-to-Miller pass wound up becoming The Lone Ranger blemish of this match:

— 1-1.

— And the end of the Penguins’ goal scoring on this night too.

— Down to 16:22 remaining and this is when Soucy hit the ice hard with his SUSPECTED (and I guess ALLEGED too) concussion. From this point on, and again – with Trocheck out too – and the Rangers were down to five defensemen.

— All the Rangers did from this point on was rally around their injured Blueshirts’ brethren.

— 5:29 in and this is when we had our first scrum of the game – and where not only was Mika right in the thick of things – but so was NDArtemi – who funny enough – was kind of quiet in this team-touchdown-on-the-board performance (1 assist).

— Thirty-seconds later?

— Fox’s first five-on-five goal of the season – and as set up by the Rangers’ fourth line:

— 2-1, GOOD GUYS – and where I thought that Rempe got robbed of an assist here too.

— But I was happy to see BIG ED, or as Maloney calls him, “THE CONDOR FROM SWEDEN,” getting the apple.

— Down to 12:18 remaining and this is when the Rangers had their first power-play of the game.

— And this is when Cullye made it 3-1, GOOD GUYS, too – and during a play that also doubled-up as Laba’s first NHL point:

— After both teams had traded man-up advantages (check the box score segment), then with 3:27 to go and this is when the Pens took their too many men on the ice penalty.

— And five-seconds later?

— Then this is when Fox gave the Rangers their 4-1, GOOD GUYS, lead:

— What. A. Shot.

— And down to 20-seconds remaining, then this is when a frustrated Harrison Brunicke was boxed for jumping Laba – as the newest Rangers’ rookie had completely owned Blake Lizotte with a big-time Blueshirts’ hit.

— 4-1, GOOD GUYS – and with the Rangers entering the final frame with 1:40’s worth of PP time too.

Here’s what I said at the time:

There are a lot of players to highlight tonight and most certainly – Laba is near the top of the list. Photo Credit: NYR

THIRD PERIOD

— While the Rangers didn’t score on this power-play (but it did bat .500 after a 2-4 showing); it was also mentioned by M$GN that Fox needed 48-games last season in order to record this third goal.

— He’s now done it after three-games this season.

— So yeah – he isn’t playing through injury anymore!

— After a long o-zone attack from the fourth line, including when THE CONDOR FROM SWEDEN was robbed by Silovs on a breakaway; then boom – MATT FREAKIN’ REMPE:

— 5-1, GOOD GUYS – and I just loved how all of the Rempe haters were forced to cry about this goal too!

— Furthermore, Rempe, in this one game, scored as many goals as Panarin, Mika, Crosby, Malkin, Miller and Karlsson – combined!

— MATT VP anyone?

— Following a play where Fox robbed a Penguins’ goal by swiping a puck away from Igor’s goal line; then Gavrikov did the exact same thing – and on a Crosby shot no less.

— To show you how much the Rangers controlled the puck; then down to 6:42 remaining, and #31 had only made 14 saves on 15 shots faced.

— Come 5:48 remaining?

— The cherry on top – and how sweet it was:

— 6-1, GOOD GUYS!

— Prediction? This one:

While it won’t be as many #6 (Jaxon Dart) and #44 (Cam Skattebo) jerseys that you’ll see at Giants’ Stadium for the remainder of the NFL season; but you will see a TON of #50 (Cuylle) and #42 (Laba) jerseys at M$G this year.

— Good for Raddysh, his first as a Ranger – but make no mistake – this play was 100% Laba – which also allowed Raddysh to split Silov’s LABIA too! (And you had to know that a stupid LABIA joke was coming someday on this site!)

— 6-1, GOOD GUYS, your final – and your first candidate for BEST WIN OF THE SEASON too.

The fun and games are over. The first two-and-true tests begin this Sunday at M$G. Photo Credit: NHL

One other “negative” from tonight’s 6-1 win?

The fact that the Rangers don’t have a day or two off following it.

After all, you’re only as good as your last game played – and for Sully’s Squad – up next are two big tests.

The Rangers will host the Washington Capitals on Sunday night – and an Ovi-team that just slaughtered the Islanders on Saturday night at IBS.

After that, the greatest contract in hockey – and player too – rolls into M$G – Connor McDavid – and a #97 who is pissed-off after two straight/back-to-back Cup losses.

We’ll see what the Rangers are made of in these next two games – as it’s tough to tell what they are now after beating a Penguins’ team pegged to finish near the bottom of the league – and a Sabres’ franchise that’s been beyond awful since 2011.

(Heck, the Sabres, after being shut-out by the Rangers in their home opener, followed up that performance by logging only one SOG in the first period, in their eventual 3-1 loss to the Bruins on Saturday.)

I’m not sure where I’ll be watching Rangers vs. Caps – and where I should mention – I think this will be Jonathan Quick’s first start of the season too.

I was originally supposed to go to my bar’s first Blueshirts’ watch party of the season – but with news of a monsoon in the area – then I don’t feel like walking home (I never drink-and-drive – and the bar is only five-minutes from my house) with high winds and heavy rain – and especially since such elements would ruin my Rangers’ gear!

But if the weather people are wrong (I think that I may have heard of this happening before), then I’ll go there – and my next blog will arrive to you on Monday.

If not, and should I stay at home instead, then back at it tomorrow night.

Great win tonight – and the Rangers did what they were supposed to do – and your final negative thought for the night – it’s just too bad that they didn’t do it during the home opener too.

But hey, the NHL is “An Any Given Sunday League” – and upsets happen all the time.

Let’s see if the Rangers, now undefeated on the road this season (2-0), can make it two straight on Garden ice – and against the toughest of challengers too.

Until now and Sunday night’s 7PM puck drop?

Then your favorite segment, which brings us to…
