Greetings and salutations everyone and welcome to another blog here on BlueCollarBlueShirts.com. The Gavin McKenna dream is back on!
And praise the hockey gods too – because once again – then if it wasn’t for Team USA’s triumph at this year’s Olympic games – then we’d have nothing positive to talk about this season!

In the latest bout of Blueshirts’ misery, and as witnessed not only at M$G, but during a TNT national broadcast too – and once again – the Devils doubled-up the Rangers by a final score of 6-3.
While not exactly 100% identical (Hughes had to “settle” for only one goal and two assists tonight – and as opposed to his hat trick and two apples scored on March 7th); but for all intents and purposes, and this post St. Patrick’s Day match was pretty much a carbon copy replica of what we just witnessed eleven days ago (full GAME REVIEW here: https://bluecollarblueshirts.com/3726/).
And with this game being played 24-hours after all of the Irish festivities – and the Rangers looked pretty drunk themselves – although it were the Devils who took all of the shots.
For the fans who are against Captain Culture, government name J.T. Miller, then they received plenty of ammo for their never-ending arsenal after this loss.
After all, then the best winning streak of the season took place without the aging #8 in the line-up.
Once returned?
While the Rangers did stave off Minnesota; but it was the beginning of the end of their season-high four-game winning streak too – and as fully explained here: https://bluecollarblueshirts.com/31426/
(In short? CZAR IGOR had to make nearly fifty saves in the 4-2 decision. Furthermore, then the Wild have also hit a tailspin themselves – as not only did they lose to the Rangers last week – but they also lost to the down-and-out Flyers and Maple Leafs as well.)
Since Miller’s return – and the shot on goal differences during these past three games have been severely jaw-dropping and shocking.
For the third consecutive match and the Rangers once again had another SOG drought that extended beyond ten-minutes (a fifteen-minute stretch against the Devils in tonight’s first period).
Granted, while shot on goal quality will always outrank shot on goal volume; but when you’re barely shooting, then you’re not improving either statistic.
That said, and at one point, then the Rangers were shooting at nearly 67%, having scored two goals on their first three shots on goal.
But that was rarely a highlight on this night, nor something anyone will remember from this match either.
Instead?
The same old boogeyman that always haunts the Rangers – Captain USA himself – Jack Hughes.

As noted, the SOG statistic was a complete joke – or at least from a Blueshirts’ perspective it was.
The Rangers were out-shot 17-2 in the first period, 12-9 in the second period and 10-7 in the third-and-final frame.
Cumulatively, the Devils out-shot their weak competition to a tune of 39-18 – which also means that New Jersey had over two shots for every shot that New York took.
As noted ever since the Rangers last loss to the Devils, then despite the Blueshirts’ special teams clicking both prior and after that defeat, then for the red-and-black attack, their special teams, struggling at the time, soon found their way on that March 7th match.
If you recall, then the Devils went 3/3 on the power-play, while also going 4/4 on the penalty kill – or in other words – the Rangers went 0/7 on special teams.
Eleven days removed from that loss and the Devils’ power-play tonight went 2/4, while their penalty kill went a perfect 2/2.
What’s that phrase of mine again?
SPECIAL TEAMS SWING GAMES – and where the Rangers’ even-strength game looked pretty “special” too.

Despite all of the bad shit that we saw on Wednesday night – and funny enough – and this wasn’t a wire-to-wire win for Hughes & Co.
After a Jacob Markstrom save on Alexis Lafreniere at the thirty-second mark of the match – and that was it for the Rangers – but they would eventually break the ice first.
Up next were a dozen consecutive saves for Jonathan Quick – and where he was forced to make both breakaway and odd-man rush saves when trying to make a game out of this.
Following a fifteen-minute Rangers’ SOG drought, the SOG statistic read as Devils 12 – Rangers 1.
Down to 4:40 remaining?
Then the only stat that truly matters, goals for, read as Blueshirts 1, Dirty Jersey 0.
The streaky Lafreniere (he had some good plays tonight – but also some boneheaded ones too), found Vladislav Gavrikov, wide-open, for a blast.
For a Russian rearguard that was solely brought into town to be a true defensive defenseman, and the end result was his 14th goal of the season – as he continues to extend his single-season career-high scoring streak.
But what happened next was so on brand for the Blueshirts.
Gabe Perreault hooked Jack Hughes just 35-seconds after the Laf-to-Gav hook-up.
Nineteen-seconds later and Captain Nico, Mr. Hischier, batted in a deflection past Quick for the 1-1 equalizer.
In total, then the Rangers’ 1-0 lead lasted all of 54-seconds.
And it would be their only lead of the game too.
In some more “ON BRAND BLUESHIRTS,” then the Rangers played their greatest hits for another unsold out crowd (officially reported as 17,307 of a possible 18,006 tickets sold – and where only tickets that are paid for are reported in this figure – as there were a ton of empty seats) – as once again and the league-leader in this department, most goals allowed at the end of a period, struck.
With just 44-seconds remaining prior to the first intermission of the contest, and Arseny Gritsyuk, who was a major factor the last time when these two teams played, pulled off one of the best individual efforts that you’ll ever see – as after defending and forcing a turnover in the Devils’ end – he then went top-shelf against Quick in the other end for the 2-1, red-and-black, goal.
Come the second period and the Rangers were on the right side of the almighty “law of averages.”
The Blueshirts, who lead the league in most goals allowed at the end of a period, also lead the entire NHL in most goals given up at the start of a period too.
That’s why it was so surprising that come the 19-second mark of the second stanza, when Mika Zibanejad, who had just lost the faceoff, saw his team recover – and then had Perreault feed him for the 2-2 equalizer.
Mika’s 2-2 goal also served as the Rangers’ third SOG of the match too.
While tied at this stage of the game; but there was never one instance where you thought that the Rangers would ever win either.
Come the middle minutes of the period/game, then we had both teams take alternating penalties (check the PENALTIES segment below for all of it) – and where the biggest result saw Lafreniere end a Rangers’ power-play when he thick-headedly hooked Dawson Mercer at the 11:09 mark.
Seventeen-seconds later?
Hughes razzled-and-dazzled, and as everyone watched in awe, he then dished the puck to Connor Brown for the 3-2, via the power-play, goal.
This was #86’s first point of an eventual three.
Again, and despite how OUT-everything’d that the Rangers were, including out-played, out-shot, out-hustled, and you get my point – and we remained at 3-2 following forty-minutes of play.
In other words, then this was still a one shot/goal contest.
But the Rangers would also have to do it without both Noah Laba and Urho Vaakainanen – as both players received injuries that they couldn’t overcome, thus leaving the Rangers down to 11F/5D.
It was Mr. Unibrow, Timo Meier, who finally scored the inevitable – the Devils’ 4-2 insurance goal – and as he did after a rebound afforded to Paul Cotter at the 6:29 mark.
It was at this time where it seemed like the long-awaited result was all but official.
Not so fast.
Come the 9:41 mark, and of all people, there was the golden nephew-in-law, Conor Sheary, to bring this game back within one, via his 4-3 goal after a Nick Bjugstad shot block on Robertson that went directly to him.
It was now time for daddy to wake up and spank his unruly Ranger children.
At the 13:05 mark, Hughes, on another individual play, and where prior to this, was robbed on one breakaway, several odd-man rushes, and while also hitting iron too – finally put the kids to bed – and as he did via his slap-shot for the 5-3 score.
Jesper Bratt, known as “The Brattman” in Newark, added the 6-3 salt in the wound goal with just 3:28 remaining.
Hughes, with the secondary assist on this score, not only picked up another multi-point game against the Rangers – but another game of three-points or more against his biggest rival too.
And when it comes to rivalries?
The Rangers, with only one more game remaining against the Devils (March 31st), are now 0-6 against both New Jersey and the Islanders this season.
In that sextet of games and the Blueshirts have also been out-scored 26-9.
But at least they beat little brother last year on April 10th – but I’ve talked about the ramifications of that unnecessary Rangers’ win/admitted Islanders’ tank about 7867896779986868 times before on this site (Matt Schaefer).
You just have to wonder how that unnecessary four-game win streak last week will hurt them come this year’s NHL Draft Lottery – but if they continue to play like how they’ve played against the Devils & Islanders this year – then perhaps it will be HELLO GAVIN MCKENNA.
And that’s really our only hope for next season – that is – unless Auston Matthews and/or Brady Tkachuk want out of the 51st State!
In case you missed it, then here’s where I last left off, NDA Panarin & the Kings downing the Blueshirts:
NYR/LAK 3:16 Review: Kings Behead Rangers’ Four-Game Winning Streak; Tank Back On? Not “Bad & Boring” Blueshirts; But Not That Exciting Either, Panarin’s Return; Kopitar’s Swan Song, Kartye Continues Hidden Gem Status; Nada From The Top-Six; No Mika SOG Either, The Annual “PRIDE NIGHT,” M$GN & More

Following another home loss on Monday night, then come Tuesday and the Rangers reconvened for practice in Tarrytown.
In a rarity, and there wasn’t any big news to come out of the skate.
Once the practice concluded, Sullivan used his media time to defend J.T. Miller, where between multiple injuries sustained and a bad Blueshirts team, and statistically, then Captain Culture is on pace to have the worst season of his career since the last time the Rangers rebuilt (2018-19).
Who could’ve predicted such an event transpiring?
Oh that’s right – I did!
Here’s Sully’s press conference:
A day later, Wednesday, GAME DAY, and the Rangers held an optional skate ahead of their dance with the Devils.
The only news to note from the A.M. skate was that CZAR IGOR was there, which meant that Jonathan Quick would get the nod in net – and for the second straight game against Jack Hughes and Co.
In what I felt was kind of a non-story at the time, but where I guess that you have to bring it up too; then it was reported by ESPN that Jack Hughes would like to have possession of his golden goal puck.
The full story can be found here: https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/48232450/jack-hughes-wants-golden-goal-puck-back-hockey-hof
While you can understand why Hughes wants possession of this monumental puck; but by laws and regulations that both the Olympic committee and Hockey Hall of Fame abide to, then they have rightful possession of the puck.
It’s just a shame that the HHOF is in Toronto, CN – and not somewhere in the good old, and now golden, USA.
By the time that Wednesday night’s game ended and Hughes kind of put a bow on the whole shebang:
Jack Hughes clarified his comments on the Golden Goal puck saying he’s honored it’s in the Hall 👏 pic.twitter.com/JM0UHzN1zW
— NHLonTNT (@NHL_On_TNT) March 19, 2026
I’ll never forget where I was during the great PUCKGATE of 2026 (3/17 – 3/18) either!
And Hughes’ post-game comments, where he pretty much said that he understood everything, but still wouldn’t mind having the puck on one of his mantles at home, confirmed what I thought when I first read ESPN’s report – NON-STORY.
Our next story?
Maybe it’s a non-story to some too, but I also think it’s worth mentioning.

Prior to puck drop tonight and M$G announced that they will be hosting a private concert, a free one at that (no rent will be paid), courtesy of James Dolan, and on behalf of the NYPD:
Today, we announced “Thank You, NYPD,” a campaign encouraging all New Yorkers to thank the New York City Police Department for their service to our great city! pic.twitter.com/uaNC0kYqLs
— MSG (@TheGarden) March 18, 2026
M$G continued their announcement with the following:
As part of this initiative, we’re hosting “Thank You, NYPD,” a private concert open exclusively to the NYPD and their loved ones, on Sat, Mar 28 at The Garden, featuring performances by John Fogerty, Cyndi Lauper, Fat Joe, Chris Distefano, Sam Morril, and more.
Full details, and how to participate, can be found here: https://dev-nypd.msg.com/

I don’t have many nice things to say about Dolan – but I’ll give him his due here.
And wow – look at the date of the event, 3/28 – as Dolan & M$G are wasting no time either.
While I don’t really want to get too political (but you know that I will anyway!); but I can’t help myself either – as one of my tweets about this story went viral:
Good for Dolan and a nice fuck you to the commie Muslim mayor too. #nyr https://t.co/47Zy10vH0L
— BlueCollarBlueShirts (@NYCTheMiC) March 18, 2026
Another tweet that went viral?
What Ron Duguay said on Monday night, as previous to this, and he was burying the Blueshirts for honoring the mentally ill who get gender mutilation surgeries:
— Ron Duguay (@RonDuguay10) March 19, 2026
I really don’t know if Dolan had the name of the communist Muslim, Zohran Mamdani, on his mind when he made this announcement – but even if that wasn’t the case – then I was happy to hear this news.
Many of us are either cops or have friends & family who work for the police – including the NYPD.
I’ll never get the anti-police stuff.
Just don’t do dumb and illegal shit – and if you abide by that – then you’ll never have to worry about them.
Many people in the police force work an insane job that’s low pay/high risk.
It’s a thankless profession – and where politicians, looking to get the criminal vote, publicly disparage them.
But when these same politicians need security from the criminals they vie for?
Then they beg the police to protect them!
I’ll get off my soap-box here (after all, then it’s pretty clear where I stand on the issue – I’m pro police – and pro NYPD too) – but I’ll share one last positive Dolan story with you – and I can’t remember the last time when I shared two positive stories about Mr. M$G either!
Following this announcement, then the Blueshirts, with Dolan footing the bill, announced that they are donating $10,000 to Hockey Fights Cancer, after the passing of Dylan Raddysh, father of Ranger Taylor and Bolt Darren.
This $10,000 figure is the public number on record.
I’m sure that Dolan has donated much more than that – an undisclosed sum – over the years.
And then there’s the Garden of Dreams charity that he founded too.
That all said?
FIRE DRURY!

I didn’t watch all of the TNT pregame show tonight (after all, the announce team was their B-Team, including the always-annoying Darren Pang, Jody Shelley and the voice of the Islanders, Brendan Burke); but I did see Henrik Lundqvist say that he felt that the rest of the Rangers’ schedule was solely about getting the younger players a chance.
“The King of Commentary” didn’t weigh-in on Miller taking power-play time away from Perreault though!
After that, a pair of Americans, Chris Chelios, then later Trocheck, both sided with Hughes – as they felt he should have sole ownership of the golden puck:
Trocheck talked to the boys before the game about who should have Jack’s Golden Goal puck and the trade buzz around him! 🔥 pic.twitter.com/YswOE3iypm
— NHLonTNT (@NHL_On_TNT) March 18, 2026
If anything, then I’m wondering moving forward, if players will try to grab these pucks immediately afterwards, then play stupid about its whereabouts to hockey officials.
Another thought?
While it would never happen (you can’t throw off goalies), but wouldn’t it be cool if we had a golden-colored puck whenever the situation (championship game in overtime) calls for it?
GAME REVIEW time – and you know my usual spiel – which includes how if you want my complete play-by-play, then check out my Tweeter/X feed over at: https://x.com/NYCTheMiC
And yep – it’s been nothing but overtime for yours truly at the real j-o-b this week – so let’s finally roll!

FIRST PERIOD
When Lafreniere recorded the game’s first shot on goal thirty-seconds in – and I knew it in my bones – the Blueshirts weren’t going to get another for a long time.
I even said as much in real-time:
Lafreniere takes the first SOG of the game – let’s see when shot #2 goes down #NYR
— BlueCollarBlueShirts (@NYCTheMiC) March 18, 2026
The Rangers’ fourth line, and Kartye too, looked alright to start.
The Devils opened up their shooting at the 4:46 mark – as Quick denied Meier on a pair of tries.
Quick, following a bunch of New Jersey o-zone faceoff wins, was up to six saves at the 6:16 mark.
And just to mention it (and because I saw a lot of Ranger fans complain about this), then this TNT broadcast was all Jack Hughes – and all the time too.
I had no issues with it.
After all, than what else is TNT supposed to talk about?
You got an American hero out there, playing in a meaningless game.
What, you wanted TNT to waste time talking about Mika Zibanejad’s failed dee-jay career?
A lot of this first period was filled with never-ending infractions such as icing, offside, pucks out of play and of that ilk.
At the 11:00 mark, Robertson denied Hughes on a 2 x 1 odd-man rush.
Two-minutes later and the Rangers’ extended their SOG drought to ten-minutes.
Come 7:45 remaining and Quick made his 11th save – on a Jack Hughes breakaway.
Quick then denied Brother Luke of a deflection goal with 6:30 to go.
It was at this time where it was apparent – the NRA had denied the Rangers’ application – THEY DON’T SHOOT!
With the Devils just dominating – and Gavrikov soon dropped Markstom’s save percentage to .500:
Laf finds Gavrikov for the snipe after the Rangers had just 1 shot in the first FIFTEEN minutes 😈🚨 pic.twitter.com/09B5iNJvQ2
— NHLonTNT (@NHL_On_TNT) March 18, 2026
1-0, Blueshirt Bums – only to be followed 54-seconds later by Perreault’s penalty and Hischier’s PPG:
NICO HISCHIER BATS IT OUT OF THE AIR! GOAL!#NJDevils #NHL #NYR pic.twitter.com/683C86jym6
— Devils Joint (@DevilsJointX) March 18, 2026
1-1.
After Hischier’s batted puck off the Brown deflection – and this is when Garden PA man, Joe Tolleson, read out Gavrikov’s goal.
You always love hearing a Rangers’ goal being announced right after the other team scores – commonplace these days!
To close the period – Gritsyuk going end-to-end – and credit to him – as you can’t hate on this fantastic individual effort:
— BlueCollarBlueShirts (@NYCTheMiC) March 18, 2026
2-1, Devils.
2-1, Devils, after twenty-minutes.
Here’s what I said at the time:
2-1, #NJDevils, through 20. 1P Thoughts:
— #NYR are lucky it’s only 2-1 – they’re being out-shot 18-2 – and out-played everywhere else too.
— Gavrikov, and Quick (duh), keeping them alive.
— Where’s Mika?
— Devils’ PP, one of the worst in the league when entering their…— BlueCollarBlueShirts (@NYCTheMiC) March 18, 2026

SECOND PERIOD
Here’s Mika’s 2-2 equalizer from the 19-second mark:
— BlueCollarBlueShirts (@NYCTheMiC) March 19, 2026
The Rangers had some momentum after this, as come the 2:45 mark, the Blueshirts had four SOG, while the Devils had nil.
But of course, and as you know, that would soon change.
At the 4:00 mark, Hughes was now 0-3 on odd-man rushes – but where he’d get a crooked figure in there eventually.
It was also reported at this time that U.V. was now out of the game with an upper-body injury:
UPDATE: Urho Vaakanainen (upper body) will not return tonight.
— NY Rangers PR (@NYR_PR) March 19, 2026
That brought the Rangers down to five defensemen – and where right after this statement, Captain Culture held Hischier.
For the first time this season, and the Rangers, previously 0/4 in their attempts to stop the Devils’ power-play, finally killed one off.
But the Blueshirts got a break in there – as one shot rang off Quick’s post.
Following Quick’s 21st save of the game prior to the half-way point of the game, we then had our slew of penalties and special teams play.
The first Devils’ penalty was of significance, as with 10:48 to go, Johnathan Kovacevic hooked/speared Laba.
Laba would never return to the game after this.
The end result of three consecutive penalty calls?
Hughes to Brown, on what was a beautiful set-up, for the Devil’s second PPG of the game – and for the 3-2 score too:
Brownie > Big Apple#NJDevils | @Mikes_Amazing pic.twitter.com/x5yEHBcoed
— New Jersey Devils (@NJDevils) March 19, 2026
Down to 7:28 remaining and Lafreniere went on a breakaway – and Markstom stopped it – but Simon Nemec was the reason why – as he had slashed #13 prior to the shot.
The Rangers didn’t register a SOG during the next two-minutes – and where Captain Nico almost scored a shorty too.
Once returned to even-strength – and Quick robbed Jack Hughes on a five-hole breakaway try.
Seriously, and not only could’ve Captain Jack scored another hat trick tonight – but he could’ve scored double-chili too!
And after Quick bailed out the Blueshirts again?
Darren Pang’s truthful remark:
“This is an awful performance by the Rangers.”
Hughes almost had another breakaway with 16.3 seconds remaining – but he collided with an official just as he was about to go off to the races.
This was to the Blueshirts’ benefit – and credit to Hughes – as he didn’t cry about the accidental contact – and as say a Mika Zibanejad would.
3-2, them, after forty-minutes.
Here’s what I said at the time:
3-2, NJD, after 40. 2P Thoughts:
— #NYR being outshot 30-11 lmao
— I hope Jack Hughes scores next – just to hear the M$G reaction
— Rangers are being out-everything’d – special teams, zone time, hustle, desire, heart, etc
— I don’t know what horseshoe, rabbit foot,…— BlueCollarBlueShirts (@NYCTheMiC) March 19, 2026

THIRD PERIOD
It was at this time where TNT showed us Laba trying to skate off whatever was bothering him (Jody Shelley thought it was a hip-flexor issue), but where he wasn’t feeling right.
And it was also at this time where this news popped up on Elon Musk’s app:
UPDATE: Noah Laba (lower body) will not return tonight.
— NY Rangers PR (@NYR_PR) March 19, 2026
The Devils, even their bottom-sixers, were just dominating the Rangers.
Bratt soon caught Captain USA for a wide-open goal, but no dice here, and as was the case with 16:11 remaining.
A few seconds later and Mika tripped the poster boy of a whole new American hockey generation.
Quick survived this Rangers’ PK, including a stop on Mr. Jack – and where the Blueshirts eventually cleared the puck four times too.
But immediately after the Devils’ PP expired?
Gavrikov turned the puck over to Cotter, the Devil had a breakaway, Quick snuffed it out, but on the rebound, there was Meier for the 4-2, away team, goal with 13:31 left to play:
TIMO MEIER PADS THE DEVILS LEAD!!#NJDevils #NYR #NHL pic.twitter.com/8VkPvFvPMF
— Devils Joint (@DevilsJointX) March 19, 2026
Sheary’s fluky 4-3 goal took place with 10:19 remaining – and this was also the last Rangers’ goal of the match too:
Conor Sheary pulls @NYRangers to within a goal midway through the third.#NYR pic.twitter.com/kliqwteYYJ
— Joe Tolleson (@joetolleson) March 19, 2026
Right after the score?
And Meier just missed Quick’s net.
And after that?
Then the Blueshirts “enjoyed” their best 5 x 5 shift of the game – but after stops on Gavrikov and Perreault – and Markstrom watched Lafreniere turn over the puck with just eight-minutes to go.
Here’s how I recapped what happened next in real-time:
“Jack, off the post, wow – that’s a breakaway, three odd-man rushes and this all denied – and as I type these very words – Jack Hughes scores off a slapshot – 5-3 to go – M$G doesn’t boo the American – and I just hit a monster bet on that too lol”
My monster bet?
A $600 winner (placed across three books with profit boosts included) – a Jack Hughes anytime goal, a Jack Hughes anytime assist, a Devils win and the game to go over six goals.
Here’s my American hero and yours:
— BlueCollarBlueShirts (@NYCTheMiC) March 19, 2026
Here’s Bratt putting the icing on the cake, his 6-3 goal – and a puck that Mika put into the net too:
The Dark Knight of the Hudson River Rivalry. pic.twitter.com/jYN2nof17T
— New Jersey Devils (@NJDevils) March 19, 2026
Egads.
6-3, Devils do it again, this time at M$G.
Yours truly?
Then I hope that the Rangers lose every game remaining on the schedule – as my eyes are still on the prize – GAVIN MCKENNA!
I can’t stress this enough – if you’re going to have a failed season, then its best to finish worst overall.
The difference in first-overall picks and picks out of the top-five are drastic – that is – unless you have the first-overall pick in a COVID 2020 year!

As far as any post-game news, then Sullivan said what you’d expect him to say about the two injuries that both U.V. and Noah Laba received – “they’re being evaluated, day-to-day.”
Sully also added that he wasn’t sure if these two would be traveling for the one-day excursion to THE OHIO STATE either – as following this second half of a back-to-back set – the Rangers will have two days off – then host the Jets on Sunday at noon.
Since there’s no reason to rush anyone back for meaningless games, then expect some call-ups – and perhaps by the time that you read these words.
Up Next For the Rangers: The Blue Jackets on Thursday night at 7PM. And duh – expect CZAR IGOR to get the nod in net too.
Up Next For Me: BED – then a NYR/CBJ GAME REVIEW at this same time some 24-hours from now.
Up Next For You: Our favorite segment, you know…
