NYR/PHI 3/9 Review: SPANKED! Blueshirts Absolutely Bash Broad Street in Arguably Their Best Win Yet; Deter Draft Lotto Dreams Too (And the Remaining Schedule Doesn’t Help “Tank For McKenna” Believers Either), Mika “THE FLYER KILLER” Zibanejad, Points & Goals Galore; Wire-to-Wire Sixty Minute Showing, Rare Rangers’ Game Where Their Goalie Didn’t Carry Them; Big Nights Up-And-Down The Line-Up, Pump The Brakes (But Be Happy About Perreault); Consider Everything, M$GN & More

For the players and coaches that are employed by the New York Rangers, then Monday night’s 6-2 massacre of the Philadelphia Flyers was a well earned victory – and arguably the team’s best win of this 2025-26 season yet too. But for fans that subscribe to the tank theory? Then this was anything but that. However you may feel, then regardless of your opinion – and you can’t expect the Blueshirts to finish out the season on a twenty-game losing streak either. Monday was proof of that – and also a glimmer of hope – as more-and-more – and it’s looking like the Rangers may actually have something with Gabe Perreault. That said? Don’t get sucked in yet – as we’ve all been disappointed before – and plenty of times over at that!

Greetings and salutations everyone and welcome to another blog here on BlueCollarBlueShirts.com. WE WANT THE CUP!

Oh wait, let me check the standings again.

Oh yeah, that’s right – I WANT GAVIN MCKENNA – and while the Rangers’ 6-2 demolishing of the Flyers on Monday night was satisfying – it also derailed the franchise’s first immediate goal when entering the off-season.

This has been my season-long motto ever since the Rangers traded away Chris Kreider over the summer. While I never expected things to get as bad as it did; but at the same time – I knew/predicted that this team was going nowhere this season. And now that we’re here? Then outside of individual performances, such as Perreault (1 goal, 1 sweet-ass assist) – and I just can’t get excited anymore after victories. Instead of that? And I only get jazzed over losses – as defeats are the only thing that will bring the Rangers closer to McKenna!

The Blueshirts, in their 6-2 rip-job of the Flyers, arguably pulled off their best showing yet.

With not many contenders to choose from (an early October 6-1 win over Pittsburgh, this year’s Winter Classic’s 5-1 victory over a talent-depleted Florida team), then it’s tough to find a better option for “best win of the season” over Monday night’s mauling in The City of Brotherly Love.

The Rangers, absolutely embarrassed in their last match, the 6-3 defeat to the Devils, went 0/7 on special teams in that game (0/4 on the power-play, 0/3 on the penalty kill).

In a response to head coach Mike Sullivan’s candid remarks about their softness and inability to care – and the Blueshirts absolutely flipped the script against the inept orange-and-black attack.

The Rangers, who once again, and for the second time in a row, received a septet of tries on special teams, and where yes, the bar was low too – turned the tables – as they went 3/4 on the power-play, while also finishing 2/3 on the penalty kill.

That’s a net gain/difference of plus five.

In a game where every negative Rangers’ trend and statistic was applied to their opponents, then the Blueshirts, who lead the league in both most goals allowed at the start of a period and most goals allowed at the end of the period – scored three times in this fashion – once to open the game – then twice more at the end of the first and second frames.

Perhaps crazier than everything else?

Then, and in the ultimate rarity of them all, and despite whatever the black-and-white statistic of CZAR IGOR’s 32 saves may imply – and quite frankly – the Blueshirts didn’t even need a decent goalie in their net.

Hell, Sieve Vagistat may have even won this game had he manned their pipes!

But if there was one thing that remained true for the Rangers – and a rare positive trend to boot?

Easy.

Mika Zibanejad’s dominance of the Flyers – as he’s become one of the greatest Broad Street Killers of all-time.

Following tonight, #93’s #52nd game against the Rangers’ I-95 rivals – and he now has 25 goals and 25 assists against them.

That’s almost Sidney Crosbyesque – as the future Hall of Famer in Pittsburgh has 60 goals and 79 assists against Philadelphia in his 93 career games played.

Of Zibanejad’s ten career hat tricks, then 30% of them have been scored against the Flyers. He almost had his fourth on Monday night.

Entering this match, then the Flyers, while admittedly in the middle of a rebuild, were trying to make a run at the second-and-final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference.

Conversely, then losses are what’s best in Rangerstown, USA these days.

Come the end of the night?

Then if you didn’t know any better, then you would’ve thought that the Blueshirts were playoff bound, while the Flyers had their eyes on McKenna.

In what was a complete and utter shellacking of their Metrosexual Division foes – and Sully’s Squad looked like a 1998 Stone Cold Steve Austin out there – as they stomped a mud-hole on Gritty – then walked it dry.

And all that the Flyer goalie, Dan Vladar, could do was cry!

For me, then you already know – I’d trade Mika tomorrow! And while I’m all for TANKING, if not the biggest supporter of it, then it is nice to see young players, including my niece’s favorite player, Noah Laba, have good games too. Photo Credit: M$GN

It took all of sixty-four seconds after puck drop for the Rangers to take a rare 1-0 lead.

Vladar, after stopping Robertson, couldn’t stop the rebound afforded to Laba – and as a result – #42 wristed a puck right over the goalie’s left skate.

While we didn’t know it in real-time, but now, and with the benefit of hindsight – and not only were the Flyers done at this moment – but so were their season-hopes of qualifying for the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs too.

As the Flyers looked like the Bad News Bears on ice, as they couldn’t get anything going whenever at even-strength – and where 99% of their 34 shots on goal never had a chance either (mainly from the outside) – and that’s when Zibanejad, who despite everything, always destroys Philly, cracked the score sheet.

At the 13:07 mark of this first period, and there was the much talked about Alexis Lafreniere, from Gretzky’s Office, to find the Swedish-Iranian center in the slot for the 2-0, Blueshirts, goal.

It didn’t end there.

To end the first frame, then new Flyer, Alex “COKE” Bump, high-sticked Will Cuylle, thus giving the Rangers a power-play with 1:59 remaining when closing the period.

Lafreniere, as mentioned, in the news prior to the game (more below), made this fortunate man-up opportunity count – and as he did with just 37-seconds remaining for the Rangers’ 3-0 goal.

And while we didn’t know it at the time – then this power-play goal wound up becoming the game-winning score too.

To open the second stanza, and knowing the Blueshirts’ expert ability to blow leads, then all I could think of were Stan Fischler’s infamous words – “the dreaded three-goal lead!”

Such words were only amplified at the 3:54 mark, as following an Adam Fox delay of game penalty at the 3:03 mark, then this is when Matvei Michkov, often criticized in Philly, scored his 16th goal of the season, via the power-play.

3-1.

(And for comparison? Then the new NHL Russian now has one more goal to his name over the seasoned vet, Lafreniere.)

The Rangers, who have been known to fold like a cheap Sieve Vagistat suit, had allowed the Flyers to work their way back into this game.

The Blueshirts’ response?

A replication of their first period output – aka – three more unanswered goals.

At the 6:10 mark, the returning Travis Konecny held one of the newest Rangers around today, Tye Kartye – and while on the former Krakhead – this was his best game in blue yet.

Thirty-seconds later?

Another shot by Vincent Trocheck – and another rebound goal too, this time on the power-play – and as scored by Perreault.

4-1.

Exactly twelve-minutes in game-time later?

Starting at the 18:40 mark – and the Blueshirts – and where it feels like it’s never been done before either (as that’s how bad this season has been) – scored a pair of goals within twenty-seconds.

The biggest Flyer Killer of them all, Zibanejad, pumped in another, the Rangers’ third power-play goal of the game, after Trocheck set-up the offense, where following it, Perreault found his center for the 5-1 strike.

For good measure, and with only sixty-seconds remaining in the period – and there was Vladislav Gavrikov blasting a puck – and where seemingly – he now had his career-high 13th goal of the season.

But upon review, this goal, was unlucky for him – as it was revealed that Kartye got a piece of the puck.

Not that Gavrikov was complaining about his 15th assist of the season – nor about Kartye’s first goal as a Ranger.

And he sure as hell wasn’t upset about the 6-1 score either!

The third period was pretty much both teams playing out the stretch.

The Rangers, not interested in running up the score, as their sole focus was on protecting their lead, sat back a lot.

In this case, the black-and-white stats does tell the story.

The Blueshirts out-shot the Flyers 12-8 in the first period, then only to see Philly take a slim 13-12 edge in the second.

The third-and-final frame, and with the winner of this match already long determined?

Then the home team out-shot their visitors to a tune of 13-3 – but, and as noted earlier – then it wasn’t like the Flyers were getting to CZAR IGOR’s net that much either.

During a long shot on goal drought from either side, then Sean Couturier, with just 4:32 remaining, scored his first goal in three months.

6-2.

A-Rod goal too.

There’s a lot of cause for joy and jubilation right now after this 6-2 final – but where let’s face it – this doesn’t happen often – if ever this season!

One last thing about all of the overreaction that I’m seeing on social media to this win, then I’ll move on to our other regular and featured segments.

Is one good – okay – FANTASTIC – game against the Flyers going to make you forget about everything else that you’ve seen during the past 3-4 years – and whether it be playoff choke jobs or two of the worst, consecutive at that, seasons in franchise history? Sorry to piss on some parades – but let’s say what’s what here! Photo Credit: Getty Images

There’s a lot of talk about Lafreniere’s numbers ever since the Rangers shelved – then traded – NDA Panarin.

In that time, ten games, and Lafreniere has five goals and five assists – aka – a third of his scoring production this season.

The Rangers are 3-5-2 during those ten-games, but ever since the return of CZAR IGOR post-Olympics, they are also 3-0-2 whenever the goalie is in the line-up – as #31 keeps distancing the Rangers further-and-further away from the McKenna hopes and dreams.

But look at the competition.

In CZAR IGOR’s return, the Rangers lost a 3-2 overtime game against these same crappy Flyers.

On 2/28, the Blueshirts won a shootout against a Sidney Crosby-less Penguins.

On 3/2, the Rangers went to overtime again, this time against an outside-looking-in Blue Jackets team, in a 5-4 loss.

After that, the Rangers pummeled a god-awful, tear-it-down, Toronto team by a 6-2 decision – and as they did on 3/5.

Jonathan Quick, and not CZAR IGOR, was the goalie on record for the Rangers’ 6-3 loss in Newark from 3/7.

Tonight, and the Rangers beat-up a bad Philly team again.

What am I getting at?

Who have the Rangers really beat or looked good against?

Teams in similar situations as them.

While I refuse to buy-in and believe anything good with this group, and especially with Chris Drury spearheading everything too; then the next two games on the docket are equally as winnable, as up next is a Calgary Flames team that’s also looking to add McKenna to their ranks too.

After that, a Winnipeg Jets’ franchise who would also love to add McKenna to their roster.

A quick glance at the schedule – and there aren’t that many true playoff teams, much less Cup Contenders, left.

When closing the season, then the only big teams left are Minnesota (3/14), Buffalo (I can’t believe I’m saying this either, on 4/8), Dallas (4/11) and Tampa Bay (4/15).

The Rangers have nineteen games remaining – and only four of them are against Cup contenders.

The other 15?

Rematches against the Devils (twice), Jets, Kings (the Panarin trade hasn’t helped them at all), Blue Jackets, Senators, Leafs, Blackhawks, Panthers (who may try to tank themselves, as this season has been lost due to injuries) and the Capitals.

Elsewhere, and the Rangers will also play Montreal and Detroit, both contending in the Atlantic – but where the Blueshirts have played well against these teams in recent seasons – and despite everything else.

Long story short?

Don’t be fooled.

Consider the competition.

The Rangers BIG MONEY GUYS, THE FAT CATS, should shine against bad teams!

That’s why they get the boffo bucks!

That said?

Then it would be nice to see the younger guys, the Laba’s, the Perreault’s, the Robertson’s, etc, continue to excel.

Watching Mika dominate a team he always does isn’t really big news.

And Lafreniere picking up a third of his points, with the Rangers season long over, shouldn’t make you forget about everything else either.

Second-to-last thought?

Then, and now knowing the remaining schedule – and that McKenna dream may go up in smoke.

Hello 12th-overall pick!

Last thought?

Have you missed J.T. Miller?

I didn’t think so.

In case you missed it, then here’s where I last left off – the best loss of the season – the 6-3 defeat in New Jersey:

I wonder if Sullivan goes to bed at night thinking of Dan Muse and the Penguins?

Following Saturday’s matinee loss to the Devils, then come Sunday, the Rangers’ off-day, and we had one piece of information, as Taylor Raddysh has been excused from the team in order to attend the funeral services of his father, Dwayne.

As it’s been known all season, then Dwayne Raddysh had been battling pancreatic cancer for some time now.

Sadly, the patriarch of the Raddysh family, which also includes Taylor’s NHL brother (Tampa Bay) and former Rangers’ prospect Darren, passed away over the weekend at only 64-years-old.

It’s being reported that Taylor Raddysh will miss the next two games, but obviously, he should be granted as much time as he needs as he deals with this life-changing and traumatic event – and especially even more so with the Blueshirts going nowhere this season.

To accommodate Raddysh’s absence, then Brendan Brisson was recalled from the Hartford Wolf Pack.

Obviously, our condolences to Raddysh.

Cancer sucks.

On Monday morning, GAME DAY, and now in Philly – and every member of the birdbrain Blueshirts’ beat had their panties soaking wet when they reported that Alexis Lafreniere was the first player on the ice for the A.M. skate – and as if this was some sort of major state media news.

After all, and it only took six-years for Lafreniere to accomplish this.

In other words – this was truly a non-story.

That is, unless Lafreniere forgot to set his clock ahead!

Here was Silly Sully’s line-up for the sixty-third game of this wretched-and-rotten 2025-26 season:

FIRST LINE: Perreault/Mika/Lafreniere

SECOND LINE: Cuylle/Trocheck/Brodzinski

THIRD LINE: Kartye/Laba/Sheary

FOURTH LINE: Edstrom/Parssinen/Chmelar

FIRST PAIR: Gavrikov/Fox

SECOND PAIR: Schneider/Borgen

THIRD PAIR: Robertson/Vaakanainen

STARTING GOALIE: CZAR IGOR

BACKUP GOALIE: Quick

HEALTHY SCRATCHES: Brendan Brisson and Vincent Iorio

IR: J.T. Miller

NON-ROSTERED FOR PERSONAL REASONS: Taylor Raddysh

This was a rare road broadcast, I believe the first of the season, where M$GN sent Brian Boyle and Kenny Albert to Philly, while also having Sieve Vagistat, Henrik Lundqvist and John Giannone in-studio. Usually, and M$GN has been sending the announcer, the color guy and Giannone on the road, while ditching the studio. Talk about a waste of money tonight – but even if Vagistat was there for free – and it would still be a waste of cash! Photo Credit: M$GN

It’s getting harder-and-harder to recap these M$GN pregame shows – and especially whenever the smug-and-useless Vagistat is around!

But to be serious, then there’s really nothing left to say.

This team sucks. We know what they are. We know that it’s all about the off-season.

The Rangers, and especially even more so with the trade deadline behind us, are playing out the stretch – and where as noted many times before – then I don’t believe whatever happens now has one iota of impact on this team come October.

I mean really, do you think that Mike Sullivan is going to ask his roster next season, “REMEMBER WHAT YOU DID ON MARCH 9TH AGAINST PHILLY!?!?!?!?!”

While yeah, I guess it’s good if the young guys come up, but we already know what everyone else can do.

Furthermore, then this roster, and most certainly this line-up, won’t be the same come the start of the 2026-27 campaign – Year 101!

After a hoarse Albert greeted us from Philly (and I’m surprised that he’s not hoarse more often – as no one works harder or calls more games than him), we then went to the studio.

Both Giannone and Lundqvist were selling us all of the Zibanejad propaganda – how much he wants to stay, how this has been a bounce-back season, and blah-blah-blah.

Not one mention on why the phrase “bounce-back” had to be used here – and how he failed in numerous playoff series’ over the years either.

Nor his routine crying acts from last season either – and which “forced” Drury into hiring his fourth coach during the past five years.

And not to take anything away from Mika’s dominance over the Flyers – but, and similar to Lafreniere – then can’t you argue that these FAT CATS are just padding their stats against bad teams too?

Where were they when it mattered-  and most certainly – where were they when it mattered most?

M$GN, and akin to Mika, then started us with the Lafreniere propaganda – including how – THROW A PARADE, IT’S ONLY BEEN SIX YEARS – he was the first on the ice during the morning skate.

Not mentioned?

How among every recent NHL first-overall pick, then he was the only player of that lot NOT to skate for his team in the Olympics.

Even Macklin Celebrini, last year’s pick, got an invite.

And the same will go for Matthew Schaefer, our future Calder Trophy winner, come 2030 too.

As far as anything else, then this ANALytical jackass, Vagistat, started criticizing Quick’s game against the Devils.

Quick is the greatest American born goalie of all-time – and a future Hall of Famer.

Vagistat was a former Islander, then became the worst back-up goalie in Rangers’ history (those stats don’t lie).

Lundqvist was silent during all of this.

And just because I brought it up last time – then yes – M$GN is still re-airing fan commercials from 2018.

They paid five guys to do their broadcast tonight – but couldn’t get a new commercial for the centennial campaign?

Then again, then such fan ads are far superior to the 96767969696798689698 J.B. Smoove commercials that we used to get!

Vladislav Gavrikov continues to have a great season in New York – but I do wonder if he’s looking to leave – as there’s no way that he signed-up for a retool/rebuild. Photo Credit: Getty Images

GAME REVIEW time.

As always, just the highlights, clips and whatever else that I didn’t mention yet.

Let the rolling commence!

How would these two look like next to Gavin McKenna?!?!?! Photo Credit: NYR

FIRST PERIOD

As noted, then just 64-seconds in, and the birthday boy, Matthew Robertson (25 today), blasted a puck at Vladar, and where thereafter, was Laba to give the Rangers the early 1-0 lead:

Just five-minutes in – and it was apparent – the Flyers just had no idea on how to get to CZAR IGOR – much less challenge him.

As the game progressed, then Kartye was extremely noticeable.

While Drury has been collecting bottom-sixers like a kid collects baseball cards – Kartye has been strong thus far.

But you also have to ask yourself this:

If Kartye is so good, then why did the struggling Krakheads give up on him?

The Flyers, again, lifeless and listless on both offense and defense, sucked the life out of their fans.

After watching how hot that crowd in N.J. was on Saturday – then Philly was a complete 180 from that.

There was just no juice, no life, no energy, nothing whatsoever – you know – like a game at M$G this season!

(But at least the Flyers haven’t been shutout seven times on home ice like Sully’s Squad!)

Down to 6:53 remaining – Mika’s first goal – but where it should be noted that this score was a team-wide effort.

Prior to Lafreniere’s assist, and Gavrikov broke Barkey’s stick with a shot attempt, which was then followed up by a pair of big hits from Kartye and Perreault too.

Here’s the 2-0, Rangers, goal:

This is when Albert informed us that this was Mika’s 24th career goal against Philly – and having seen all of them – and it felt like 240!

The Rangers got their first power-play of the match with 5:30 remaining after Zegras held Big Billy Borgen.

The best scoring chance during these 2:00 was when Dvorak had a short-handed breakaway – but he didn’t get the shot off – as CZAR IGOR made a perfect poke check on the potential attempt.

In game, that at times, felt like a never-ending trip to the sin bin; the Flyers, after the Rangers’ power-play went 0/1, got one of their own, as Gavrikov cross-checked Tippett – and to say it – then this penalty was undisciplined and unnecessary.

The Blueshirts’ PK went 1/1 here – and then drew a penalty too – as Mr. Bump high-sticked Cuylle.

Following 26-seconds of scoreless foreplay, the Rangers then had a 1:34 power-play with just 1:59 remaining in the period.

And come 36.8 seconds to go?

Lafreniere’s 3-0, Rangers’ power-play, goal!

Take a look:

Three-zip, through twenty-minutes.

Here’s what I said at the time:

I can’t jump on the Quebec Softball King bandwagon yet. I’ve just seen too much.

SECOND PERIOD

If 3-0, away team, wasn’t the end of the game – then by the end of the period – it sure was.

As noted, then this crowd was devoid of life.

This fact was extremely noticeable just 1:28 in, as after Tippett split the Schneider/Robertson pair – he had a breakaway – but the crowd couldn’t be bothered to cheer.

And they barely cheered that much after Fox’s penalty/Michkov’s 3-1 goal either:

The Rangers saw Michkov’s power-play goal – then raised it.

Here’s Perreault’s 4-1 job:

The Flyers looked like they had never played hockey before – or worse than that – my old high school hockey team!

And Perreault almost scored again – as out of the faceoff and CZAR IGOR found the rookie with one of his homerun passes – but #94 went ever-so-wide with the attempt.

In a match where the Blueshirts could’ve won 10-0, they then had four chances to score on one shift – and as they did with 7:15 remaining.

Conversely, and CZAR IGOR was yawning when making elementary saves, and as he did with 5:28 to go when he stopped Dvorak again.

Come 2:21 remaining, and a frustrated Cam York blatantly tripped Adam Edstrom.

This clear-as-day infraction was like catching your child taking a snack out of the cookie jar.

And with eighty-seconds remaining in the period – Mika’s 25th career goal against the Flyers – the 5-1 PPG:

For the icing on the cake, then just 20-seconds later, and this is when Gavrikov found Kartye for the 6-1 deflection goal:

6-1, Rangers, through two periods.

Game over.

Here’s what I said at the time:

We don’t say this often – but this was a very easy win for CZAR IGOR! Photo Credit: NYR

THIRD PERIOD

As noted up top – then not much went on here.

However, and just to mention it, then one of the worst goalies in the league today, Sam Ersson, took over Rick Tocchet’s net, as Vladar was mercifully pulled by the Philly bench boss.

The Flyers got a power-play just a minute in, as Schneider had hooked Tippett.

This just gave the Rangers more time to practice their penalty kill, which was now 2/3 once B-Schneids was released from the box.

Really, not much went on this period – as the Rangers just sat back and protected the lead.

An ill-advised Borgen pass, which hit Grebenkin’s stick, allowed Sean Couturier to score an identical goal when compared to Mika’s first goal of the game:

6-2, with 4:32 remaining.

And when that time elapsed?

You already know!

6-2, Rangers over Flyers, your final from the cheesesteak capital.

YUGE JERRY, YUGE! Photo Credit: M$GN

Up Next For The Rangers: This hectic post-Olympic schedule continues, as the Rangers will host the Flames at M$G on Tuesday night – and where both teams will also be playing their second half of a back-to-back set.

And duh – I’d expect Quick to get the nod in net too.

This game has major implications on the McKenna sweepstakes, as the Rangers, 58-points through 63 games played, are the third-worst team in the league, while the Flames, 57-points through 63 games, are second-worst.

(The Canucks, 46-points through 64 games played, are dead-last in the league – and as a result – the odds-on favorite to land McKenna. That said? Then the new draft rules could lead to a Rangers’ miracle – and boy-oh-boy – do we need just that!)

So yeah.

I hope that the newest Calgarians in Alberta, a pair of former Rangers at that, Brennan Othmann and Ryan Strome, continue another negative Blueshirts’ trend – their alumni always scores against them!

It should be noted that Othmann isn’t with Calgary, as instead, he’s in their AHL system.

But what a perfect time to call him up – as you know that he’d love to show up the Blueshirts – and most certainly – Cowardly Chris Drury too!

Up Next For Me: Barring any crazy overtime at the real j-o-b on Tuesday night, then I shall return tomorrow with a New York v. Calgary GAME REVIEW.

Also Up Next For Me: Bedtime, which also means…
