NYR/PITT 3/31 Review: Crosby Owns Lundqvist Again; Lundqvist Winless Since Return, Explaining Why Crosby Is Dirty, MSG Broadcasts Are Getting Just As Corporate As M$G Itself, NYR Still Seeking First Home Win Since 2/19, AV Mixes Up The Lines Again & Much More From a Lifeless & Dead M$G

I can’t stop laughing whenever someone calls Hank a “King”.

What’s up everyone and welcome to another blog here on BlueCollarBlueShirts.com. Tonight, the Rangers lost a 4-3 SO decision to the Pittsburgh Penguins. This was a shootout loss, which means it just increased the Rangers odds of clinching the first wild card. It really seems to be a done deal anyway, it’s just a matter of time.

With one game remaining with the Penguins, the last game of the season, let’s look at Lundqvist vs the Penguins in the past year of games played:

  • April 21, 2016. Pittsburgh 5 – Rangers 0. Lundqvist 14 saves on 18 shots. Lundqvist pulled from game.
  • April 23, 2016. Pittsburgh 6 – Rangers 3. Lundqvist 17 saves on 23 shots. Lundqvist pulled from game.
  • November 21, 2016. Rangers 5 – Pittsburgh 2. Raanta starts & wins.
  • November 23, 2016. Pittsburgh 6 – Rangers 1. Lundqvist 13 saves on 17 shots. Lundqvist pulled from game.
  • December 20, 2016. Pittsburgh 7- Rangers 2. Raanta 40 saves on 47 shots. Lundqvist does not play.
  • March 31, 2017. Pittsburgh 4 – Rangers 3. Lundqvist 32 saves on 35 shots. Matt Murray, who makes $8M less & has won a Stanley Cup plays. Lundqvist loses in a shootout, despite the Rangers killing a two goal deficit and tying the game up with 11 seconds to go.

Just looking ahead, here’s your reminder on Hank vs the Canadiens this season:

Canadiens vs Rangers

  • January 14th, 2017. Canadiens 5 – Rangers 4. Lundqvist 17 saves on 22 shots. Price plays and wins. Of note, Raanta started this game and had a shut out after one period. Raanta got hurt in this game and Hank played the next 40 minutes, which featured at one point, Hank giving up three goals in less than two minutes. King!
  • February 21, 2017. Canadiens 3 – Rangers 2 (Shootout). Lundqvist 28 saves on 30 shots. Price plays and wins. Of note, Price out-dueled Lundqvist in the shootout.
  • March 4th, 2017. Canadiens 4 – Rangers 1. Lundqvist 31 saves on 35 shots. Price plays and wins.

It’s amazing how some of this fan base really think Lundqvist is the answer to winning games, despite every fact and stat suggesting otherwise.

The new defense from Lundqvist apologists is that “well, he has a great history in the playoffs.” Does he really?  Ever since signing the contract that made him the highest paid goalie in the league, he gave up back-to-back touchdowns to Tampa (Even one game where the Rangers scored 5), lost a Game 7 to Tampa and was completely embarrassed by the Penguins last season.

Furthermore, “The King” (he should also be embarrassed by that nickname) has not been voted to an All-Star Game, nor received any Vezina attention, since the new contract. To expand more, his back-ups, Cam Talbot & Antti Raanta have routinely outplayed him and boosted better stats. Even this season, Talbot will be in the Vezina running while Raanta, with the same team in front of him as Hank, has posted far stellar numbers.

Listen, Bobby Orr is the best defenseman of all time. I don’t want him on my team in 2017. The same applies with Lundqvist.

It was funny – tonight, Eddie Giacomin was in the house. Sam & Joe went on and on about him. What they didn’t mention was that the Rangers traded him when they felt he had served his purpose. If you can trade Giacomin, you can trade Lundqvist. Case closed.

I want to buy this fan a beer.

If you didn’t see the game, and based on my social media accounts, many of you skipped it or the MSG networks screwed you, here’s all you need to know about Lundqvist’s performance tonight:

KING!

We all hate Sid, but there is no denying it – he’s still the MVP.

Many of you know I watch every Oiler game because of Cam Talbot. While in my mind, I have no doubts that McDavid is the successor to Crosby’s throne, McDavid isn’t there just yet. He’s close though. However, Crosby is still in the prime of his career. McDavid is one of the best in the league, but I don’t think he’s even scratched the surface yet.

Crosby is a player in the wrong era. As mentioned in my “ICE GUARDIANS” review, Crosby plays in an era where fighting and the role of the enforcer has been reduced to such a minimal role, that both fighting & the enforcer is essentially non-existent. Since the days of the enforcer are gone, Crosby takes a ton of cheap shots. That’s not to say that Crosby isn’t dirty too, however, I do think some of Crosby’s dirty play stems because he has no one to protect him out there.

All the greats had enforcers, whether it be Gretzky, Hull, Clarke, Lemieux, Messier, etc. Perhaps the only great from years ago, who didn’t have an enforcer, was Gordie Howe. That was because Howe was the enforcer too! When you see some of the “greatest of all time” debates, I think that’s why some people give Howe the edge over Gretzky. Howe scored and was so feared, people didn’t want to mess with him.

However, all that talk is for a different blog. In today’s NHL, Crosby has dealt with numerous dirty hits and nasty checks because people get away with it. Crosby already missed a year and saw his play falter a bit because of concussions. Ever since returning to his prime & recovering from his concussion issues, Crosby has gotten a little mean streak.

While I know it’s popular with Ranger fans to make fun of Pierre McGuire’s love affair with Crosby, call Crosby a cunt, make pictures/memes of Crosby crying, whatever, the bottom line is Crosby has two Cups & is the greatest player in the NHL today. Plus, I always find it hypocritical that Ranger fans will get on Crosby, yet ignore Lundqvist’s hissy fits, flipping nets, crying about his defense, squirting water bottles, slashing innocent women, etc. They also ignore how Lundqvist has never won a Stanley Cup too! Meanwhile, Crosby carried his team to two Cups & carried them to another a SCF. Just like how Murray, for $8M less is better than Lundqvist, Crosby has had a far superior career than the overrated & overpaid “King”.

I’m not excusing Crosby for slashing off fingers or spearing people in the nuts. He is a little bitch for doing that. However, I do understand it. He’s defending himself because he doesn’t want a concussion again. People who get concussions are prone to getting repeat concussions. It’s like pissing while you’re drinking. Once you crack the seal, you’re just gonna piss all night. Once you get a concussion, the next big hit you take, you’re gonna have another concussion.

I truly believe if Crosby played in the enforcer and non pussy era of the NHL, his stats would be even better and he wouldn’t be dirty. If a guy like Bob Probert or Joey Kocur or Tie Domi was on a line with him, other players would think before blasting Crosby with a body check. Plus, the equipment in the NHL is different. Shoulder pads don’t just protect shoulders anymore. They are also there so you  can launch yourself into an opponent without fear of risking injury to yourself. It’s just a different league and all I’m trying to say is that Crosby is still the best in the game today & I understand why he is so dirty.

The only 30 to win a Stanley Cup with the Rangers.

Before getting into the meat and potatoes, just a quick few notes about MSG networks:.

Real things first – congratulations to John & Justin Giannone. May Justin remain safe and thank you in advance for your service.

With John celebrating Justin’s graduation, Glenn Healy replaced Giannone on the broadcast. Remember when I said Healy was edgy a bit when he first started? Well that’s over with. Instead of going the Keith Hernandez route, Healy is just as homogenized as everyone else, outside of Ron Duguay. Healy made sure to join the Henrik Lundqvist “Kiss My Ass & Coddle Me Closely” Club, which is ran by President Joe Micheletti.

It must be tough for these MSG people. Not only do you have to worry about what you say as being controversial, because after all, this is the same organization that fired the legendary Marv Albert for saying the Knicks stunk, but you have to plug 7867868976896879678967896789 corporations in every other sentence.

A typical copy read is, “This Dunkin Donuts replay, sponsored by Delta and Chase, has been brought you by Kia and Land Rover with special assistance from Hyundai, Coca-Cola and our special friends at Bud Light in conjunction with Mercedes-Benz and Foxwoods.”

Let’s not even mention all the gambling MSG Networks promotes too. From NY Lotto, Empire Casino, Draft Kings and telling people to eat Papa John’s pizza, it’s a fucking shit show. People have stopped going to the games because they are being priced out by the corporations, now you got the corporations in your home. It’s incessant and overkill. It’s only a matter of time before you can’t see the numbers on jerseys anymore because it will be all corporate logos. “2 MINUTES FOR HIGH STICKING ON THE RANGER WITH THE SHELL GAS STATION LOGOS.”

Healy was ok for Gianonne tonight, but he seems like he was biting his tongue a lot. I guess there was a Knicks game tonight, because Trautwig covered Pidto’s “150 Seconds” spot.

Speaking of the MSG Networks – many Ranger fans complained to me on twitter that they couldn’t see the game or couldn’t get the game in HD. With basketball and hockey season nearly over, only one team out of the five NYC metropolitan teams are going to the playoffs – the NY Rangers. That said, the dreadful and pathetic Knicks were on MSG. Islanders/Devils were on MSG2. This Rangers vs Penguins game, you know, two top of the league teams, one being the Stanley Cup champions with two Stanley Cup winning goalies, were relegated to MSG 3, aka “The Overflow Channel.”

I haven’t looked at the TV ratings at a while, but are the Knicks, RIGHT NOW, pulling better numbers than the Rangers? I know the Islanders and Devils aren’t. I don’t get why MSG would black out or piss off a large percentage of their viewers, by putting on an inferior product on their main channels.

2000 words in, maybe I’ll talk about the game now! Shit, for someone who went into this blog trying to finish it quick, so I could watch Bellator and the WWE HOF, I sure am procrastinating!

By the way, all the MSG Networks talk was presented to you by  Phil Mushnick and @sportsfunhouse !

What MSG looked like tonight. It was so quiet you could hear people ordering sushi.

Most alarming takeaway about the Rangers loss – Malkin & Hagelin were among the scratches. NYR still struggled at home anyway. For the Rangers, the most significant scratches were Vesey & McDonagh, both scratched for rest purposes.

With the scratches, here’s what NYR rolled out:

Zibanejad/Nash/Buchnevich – after being scratched repeatedly, the commie was now on the first line.

Kreider/Stepan/Zucc – normal.

Hayes/Fast/Grabner – AV’s latest experiment. It still makes no sense to take Miller off the third line to me.

Lindberg/Miller/Puempel – by the third period, Miller was back with the first line guys, which brings the question – why put him on the fourth line in the first place?

Defensively:

Holden/Girardi – if you’re one of these fans that blame every goal allowed by Hank on the defense, you would have a field day with these two.

Staal/Klein – the decline of both of these players has been tough to watch this season.

Skjei/Smith – Smith has not impressed me. Skjei belongs on the first pair, just for his offense alone.

And as you know, the better goalie was on the bench, as the Rangers still try to figure out how to get Hank going, despite having a perfectly fine and capable goalie that’s ready & suitable.

Going into this game, I thought the Penguins would eat the Rangers alive, especially coming off a shellacking from Chicago. With the Rangers best D-man out, in McDonagh, I thought Lundqvist was going to have a rough night. The bad Crosby goal aside, this was Hank’s best game since returning.

I know, I know – Hank always starts off slow and “plays strong.” Sorry, that’s not good enough for the highest paid goalie. He’s the only goalie in the league with this bullshit. Plus Pittsburgh was without a guy from their top PP unit (Malkin) and from their top PK unit (Hagelin).

Were these signs plastered over MSG tonight?

I talked about how many people that I talk to on social media decided to skip this game tonight. Whether it be Bellator, the WWE HOF, a Friday night or terrible weather, this wasn’t a must see game for people. That also came across on TV, as the building was 30% empty, according to several fans that were there. It was like a morgue.

Perhaps many fans have just tuned out and are ready for the playoffs, because really, outside of getting work, tinkering with lines and the never-ending goal of getting Hank back to his prime, these last 5 games are meaningless. It’s going to be the Rangers vs Montreal in the first round. It’s only a matter of time before it’s official.

I’m not even joking. The feel of this game on the ice and from the crowd, was that this was a preseason or an exhibition game. You would never know you had two playoff stalwarts out there.  I will give Girardi & Stepan credit, both were blocking shots, which was probably not a good idea in a meaningless game, so close to the playoffs. Remember Klein and his injury? Both blocked shots were scary too, because Girardi got hit in the same ankle that cost him two weeks of the season. Stepan also struggled skating to the bench after a block.

We’ve seen this before from the Rangers. When Hank has a string of bad games, they go back to shotblocking. They blocked 18 shots tonight, more blocked shots than in recent games. Again, this is more of coddling Hank at the expense of the team. Do we really need anyone to get injured so we can get Hank going?

I will never understand the Hank stuff. This is a business. Would you pay $850 for a very used cell phone when you can get a better & fresher cell phone for $100?

Raanta is the last Ranger to wear the Broadway Hat. Not ironically, it’s the last time the Rangers won a game.

This was a very good start for Lundqvist. I know many of you wonder why I harp on Lundqvist so much, but how can you not? It’s all the MSG Network talks about and really, by letting Hank captain the ship, you’re making the same mistake you made in 2015. Seriously, I feel helpless watching these games. Talbot should’ve started in 2015. Raanta should be starting now. I’m not the coach or the GM, so all I can do is sit back, watch and just get frustrated watching the Rangers lose and Hank struggle. I’m glad many of you are seeing the light now, but I wish Hank was as great on defense as his supporters are at coming to his defense.

The Penguins out shot the Rangers 15-8 in the first period. Most of this game was a defensive battle, with both goalies doing their job and making saves. The Rangers got off to the better start and I believe were out-shooting the Pens 7-2. However, the Penguins defense turned into a 1990’s Devils defense and prevented the Rangers from getting shots off & quickly jumped ahead in the SOG department.

The Rangers would get nailed for two penalties in the first period. The Rangers PK were able to keep the Penguins off the board. Lundqvist dominated the first penalty kill, stopping several near goals. The Penguins would take a power play into the second period.

In the second period, after their power play just expired, Jake Guentzel took a perfect pass from Crosby and beat Lundqvist at his door step, not even 40 seconds into the period. 1-0 bad guys. Cue the “THE DEFENSE ALWAYS PLAYS BAD IN FRONT OF LUNDQVIST” talk. Rangers D was bad, but Lundqvist was beat too.

The Rangers would then take another penalty, but the Rangers killed it. However, Crosby would make the play of the game at the halfway mark of the period. As you can see from the video I posted above, Crosby scored on Hank from behind the goal line. Give credit to Crosby for making a play like that, but that is inexcusable for Lundqvist. The fact that Crosby even tried that shows you what he thinks about Lundqvist’s game. 2-0 bad guys.

The Rangers would get screwed by the refs, as usual. Tonight’s miscue was one ref accidentally blocking a puck, as Derek Stepan was about to go to the races on a breakaway. Stepan has been hot lately, so I’m not so sure that he goes wide right with it. Anyway, we didn’t even get a chance to see it, since the ref was out of position and it hurt NYR.

The Rangers would get a break with under two minutes to go in the second period, when Mark Streit took a horrible and blatant penalty when he tripped Rick Nash. Seriously, what a bonehead penalty. The Rangers made the Penguins pay as Nick Holden blasted one from the point for the rare NYR PPG. 2-1, Penguins, with under 30 seconds left to play. This goal rejuvenated the Rangers, although the fans sounded like they’d rather be anywhere else.

In the final frame, Bryan Rust scored 6 minutes and change into the third period on a pedestrian play. This was already after Hank made a flurry of saves and got a save from a post. 3-1 bad guys.

I was going to do my Micheletti rant, but what can I say that I haven’t said before? He was brutal and brought the hard verbal fellatio for his King tonight.  I was going to watch this game at the same time as the WWE HOF, but I wanted to hear the broadcast, just because I’m interested in what Micheletti would say next. That’s kinda the same reason many of my detractors read this blog too!

However, I do gotta say this on Joe. When Rust scored, he immediately said the Rangers blew an assignment, then said he has to see the replay. I love how he was already in Lundqvist defense mode before even seeing how the goal was scored! You can really blame the defense on any goal. After all, how come the defense didn’t block the shot? It’s just amazing how many excuses Micheletti has for his Swedish meatball.

Rick Nash would score two minutes later, making the score 3-2. Nash has been playing really well of late. I hope he carries this into the playoffs. He has been hustling and out-muscling guys out there. It’s about time he used that big frame to show people what’s up.

Of note, Miller made this play happen with his assist. Again, why is he starting games on the fourth line? He would also assist on the game tying goal too.

I also found  it funny that during this game, MSG played Hulk Hogan’s theme song, “Real American” as a way to get Lundqvist going.

Down 3-2, with Lundqvist on the bench where he belongs, the Rangers tried to muster up a 6 vs 5 goal. For the second time this season, the Rangers found a way, as Kreider scored with 11 seconds left. I had to keep rewinding this play, because I didn’t believe it. 3-3 game.

In the five minute 3 vs 3 OT, both goalies were tested, but King Murray (You can call him a King, he won a Cup unlike Lundswiss) made the save of the game. The Rangers had a 3 vs 0, yet Grabner, who has been cold as a dog’s dick on a winter day, blew it. I still don’t know how the Rangers fucked up a 3 vs 0 rush. It’s fucking unheard of.

Each team would register 3 shots in the OT, but really, the Penguins were just trying to give the Rangers two points with turnover after turnover. The Rangers couldn’t make them pay.

In the shootout, Murray stopped Zibanejad & Zucc. Lundqvist was easily exposed by Kessel & Crosby. The Crosby goal was such a matter of fact goal, that even I was embarrassed for Lundqvist.

Oh and once again – I love the Hank fans. “Oh, Hank is bad on breakaways.” “Oh, Hank is bad with the puck.” “Oh, Hank is bad when he leaves the net.” “Oh, Hank can’t make passes.” “Oh, Hank struggles on shootouts.”  “Oh, Hank needs time to get going.” THEN WHY THE FUCK IS HE THE HIGHEST PAID GOALIE IN THE NHL? Do you know who is good on shootouts, breakaways, puck handling, making passes and just better than Hank overall in 2017? Cam Fucking Talbot and King Raanta!

Rangers lose 4-3, dropping their 8th straight game at home. But hey, ticket prices have gone up 20%-100% for next season! Why the fuck would anyone want to pay these terrible prices for a dead as shit building, when it’s cheaper to see the team win on the road, in a better venue to boot?

Standings time.

At this point, with four games left, do the math yourself – Rangers vs Habs round one. Ottawa has collapsed down the stretch. NYR isn’t catching third place. I just want to see Columbus win the Metro, so we get a first round exit of either Pittsburgh or Washington.

I have the same feeling I have had ever since the Rangers lost the Cup in 2014. That “same old shit” feeling. I just don’t see how this team is winning a Cup with Lundqvist. I’m rooting for it and hoping for it and even trying to come up with scenarios in my head on how they can do it. However, I wonder if in the first round, if Chris Kreider is better off skating into Lundqvist than Price?

Three straight losses now for the Rangers & Lundqvist, to playoff teams to boot. Four games remain. Here they are:

It’s already been announced Hank is playing three of the final four, with Raanta most likely playing the finale at MSG. I’m only predicting Raanta for the MSG finale, because I think he gets the Steve McDonald award that night and because I think you rest everyone, so they are fresh for the playoffs.

While I thought the Rangers would’ve got their ass kicked tonight, I am proud of the fact that they came close and as usual, had a strong third period and fought back. It seems they have to always do that with Lundqvist in net.

I thought Steve Valiquette made a good point tonight – if Crosby doesn’t score that amazing behind the goal line goal, the Rangers win tonight. If the Rangers won this game though, while the goal is a highlight, it’s not going to be blown up as a game changer. That said, it was a game changer and it’s a poor goal allowed by the faux King.

Many of you fans seem checked out until the playoffs and I get it. After all, will anyone a year from now remember how the Rangers finished down the stretch or will they remember what happened in the first round? I mean, I can remember the Rangers beating Detroit in the final game last year, only because it meant NYR had to play Pittsburgh, rather than going to the Atlantic crossover bracket. It’s amazing I said the Rangers would regret trying to beat Detroit in that game. At least AV learned this year.

As far as my return with another blog, I’m 99.9% taking Sunday off. It’s a meaningless game and I’m sick of the Lundqvist experiment already. Plus, it’s Wrestlemania and Sunday night is the best night on TV, with “Homeland”, “Walking Dead” (Finale this week), “Last Man On Earth”, “Bar Rescue” and “Feud”. Spending two hours writing about another Hank loss doesn’t seem like a good use of my time.

The game after Philly, the Capitals game, is a late game, so depending on my job, if I don’t have to be up at 4AM, I’ll do a blog. (NOTE TO EDDIE S.: IF I DON’T HAVE WORK ON WEDNESDAY MORNING, YOUR WHISKY BOTTLE THAT IS SITTING IN MY CAR IS MINE!) Maybe I’ll try to sneak something up in between, who knows. As always, you can always talk shit, argue with me, make your death threats, offer to buy me beer and all that jazz, by interacting with me on the tweet tweet @NYCTheMiC.

Who knows, maybe I’ll do a blog tomorrow night if Cam Talbot wins his 40th… How about that fucking Cam Talbot? I TOLD YOU SO! Another great thing about doing this blog – talking to Edmonton Oiler fans. I wish some of the Ranger fan base was as knowledgeable as these fans.

I’m also a member of 76786789678967896789678967896 facebook groups. The one I have really enjoyed the most lately is “New York Rangers Hockey Maniacs.” Facebook search that one & I usually comment on games there too.

I really feel that the fans and players themselves are on auto-pilot now. Let’s just get to the fucking playoffs, put our big boy pants on and play some real fucking hockey.

4500 words on a meaningless game! Time to watch Bellator and Kurt Angle.

LET’S GO RANGERS

See ya when I see ya.
