NYR/WPG 3/11 Review: J! E! T! S! – JUST END THE SEASON! Blueshirts Extend Losing Streak To Four Games; Continue Free Fall in Playoff Race, Bozo The Bench Boss Can’t Push the Right Buttons; Can’t Find An Even-Strength Goal Either, Officials Provide No Help; But That’s Not An Excuse Either, Brutal M$GN Broadcast & More

It was more of the same old shit for these Bad News Blueshirts on Tuesday night. As previously noted on this site following the pair of the wins over the third-worst in the league Predators and third-worst in the East Islanders last week, then the Rangers, who have the toughest final stretch of the season, where their next eleven opponents after those hollow victories were against playoff contenders, are now 0-4 in these matches after dropping a 2-1 decision to the Presidents’ Trophy bound Winnipeg Jets. Don’t let the final score, a one-goal margin, fool you either. While granted, “Lavy’s Lot” had every chance in the world to win this game; but at the same time – and the Jets just dominated this match – and as their 90% of zone time would suggest. Furthermore? Then in somewhat of a cruel irony – and it was a rare Rangers’ power-play goal, their first in their past thirteen tries, and their second in their last twenty-two attempts, that held up as their lone score of the game. Not good!

Greetings and salutations everyone and welcome to another blog here on BlueCollarBlueShirts.com. Just End The Season!

And the end of this miserable and disappointing, albeit somewhat predicted in these pages at the start of it, 2024-25 campaign, can’t get here soon enough.

After all, is there any resident of Rangerstown, USA in the land that has actually enjoyed watching this team play this season?

Rather than feelings of enjoyment and enthusiasm; instead, it’s been nothing but horror and all-out utter disgust.

Stop me if you’ve heard me say this before this season: The Rangers’ FAT CATS were neutered by their opponent in another loss. While Missing Mika did score a fluky power-play goal – he also missed a net and couldn’t bury a shot during do-or-die time. The other highest-paid forward, the other player that along with Zibanejad, who eats up 25% of the team’s payroll? No points and a -1 showing – and where worse than that – a complete lack of a defensive effort too.

Off puck drop this morning, then this will be a quick GAME REVIEW today.

As previously noted throughout this week, then I’m logging a ton of overtime at the real j-o-b – and where after working a sixteen-hour shift – then writing about this depressing team isn’t going to be a priority when opposed to getting some shuteye.

Furthermore?

Then just like these here 2024-25 Rangers – then I too feel like a broken record.

After all, it’s the same old shit time-and-time again.

Perhaps worse than that?

Then it’s extremely tough to find anything likable with this Blueshirts’ bunch anymore – that is – except for the fourth liners – and that’s a damning statement when taking an overall look at the present state of the organization – which also includes both the head coach and general manager.

In other words, then I just wanted to post something about this game for the sake of posterity – and as soon as possible at that.

Plus, and after sleeping for only four-hours – then I’m right back to more OT at work – and where I never thought that I’d ever say this – a welcomed distraction from hockey.

(Holy dashes Batman! Morse Code my dear Robin!)

If there was ever a graphic to sum up the Rangers’ defensive play this season, then this one is it – as on the Jets’ first goal from Tuesday night – and you had two Peggers down low – and with five Rangers watching. Photo Credit: TSN

For both the feeble-minded and delusional Ranger fans out there – or perhaps “optimistic” and “believers” are two kinder descriptions; then for this ilk, and when recapping this latest Blueshirts’ fiasco – they’d tell you that the “SCREW THE RANGERS” button was pressed on Tuesday night – while also claiming that the referees were the sole reason for the 2-1 loss.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

In reality, while Tuesday’s game winning goal was the end result of some piss-poor officiating – that was just a part of it.

Long before the apple of Sam Rosen’s eye on this night, Gabe Vilardi, scored his power-play goal after another REMPUTATION penalty assessed, another infraction that embodied “FAKE NEWS” as well; then the Jets had already established a firm control over this game.

I’m not exaggerating when I say the following:

The Jets, not only the Best in the West, but tops in the league too, just owned every single five-vs-five possession metric – and where the Rangers spent nearly 99.9% of the contest chasing around the team from Manitoba like chickens with their heads lopped off.

For the Rangers, it was a lot more of the same – as their FAT CATS, their highest-paid players, were largely ineffective, while conversely, it was their players barely making the league minimum, including a fourth line that won’t be denied, that were most competitive.

And since these are the heartbreak Blueshirts, a squad that always invents new ways to lose, then in a newest wrinkle – their power-play, which entered the game zero of their last twelve and one of their last twenty-one – actually scored on the man-advantage.

However, such an oddity – so rare that even Sam Rosen almost forgot how to say his famous catchphrase – was pretty much the end result of the law of averages weighing in.

After all, once breaking the schneid, and come the end of the game – and the Blueshirts have a new power outage streak – no power-play goals in their last two tries – and now two of their last twenty-four.

Impressive.

However, while “SPECIAL TEAMS SWING GAMES,” an adage of mine, and one that I frequently repeat on this site remains as true as ever; come the end of the game and both teams were nearly identical, as the Rangers went 1-3 on their power-play, while the Jets went 1-4.

Rather than special teams swinging the final outcome on Tuesday night, instead it was 5 x 5 play – and where the Rangers looked like the former in a “boys vs men’s” match-up.

The Rangers’ fourth line, their Wolf Pack alumni line, featuring Brennan Othmann, Jonny Brodzniski and Matt Rempe, were once again the best forward trio for Bozo The Bench Boss during this loss – and where also once again – Lavy, who never adapts to what’s going on in front of him, got away from them when the game was on the line. Photo Credit: NYR

From start-to-finish and just to keep hammering this point home – and the Jets just owned the Rangers whenever at even-strength – that is – except for whenever the fourth line was out there.

Put it this way: Come the end of the first period, where the Rangers were out-shot 12-9 – and Othmann, with three SOG, had a third of these team tries, while Rempe had one of his own.

That’s great for them – but as you already know – that’s not great for the team overall – and especially when this has become a common occurrence throughout this campaign.

This game was a complete mess for the Rangers – and where the broadcast was no better.

Since the GAME REVIEW segment will be our shortest of the season, then just to say it here – and Sam Rosen and Joe Micheletti were insufferable, intolerable, horrible and nauseating – and where their retirements can’t come soon enough.

I’m not joking when I say this:

With the Blueshirts as bleak as ever, then all you heard from these Peggin’ wavin’ pom-pom clowns was nothing but love for Winnipeg – and where as usual – Rosen was just reading Winnipeg Wikipedia entries on-air.

Suffice to say – and not one Ranger fan wants to hear never-ending praise for the opponent from their home-team announcers.

Heck, I rather hear Sam & Joe rip the Blueshirts to shreds – because if that was the case, then at least I’d know that misery truly loves company.

At one point, and as Rosen would not stop verbally fellating both Luke Schenn and Gabe Vilardi on-air – then I actually thought that he was going to tell us their penis sizes – and what they tasted like too.

Rosen’s rapid decline to the finish line was never as worse than as it was on Tuesday night.

But the Rangers’ decline, and sad to say, remains far worse than whatever the Senile Old Man is rambling on about in the booth.

But to be fair, then at least Micheletti, during the rare times when he would come up from air after going to town on Peggers’ Peckers (while also going on-and-on about all things pertaining to Minnesota hockey), would actually call-out the Rangers by name for their horrid showings – and including the lack of efforts from the likes of Alexis Lafreniere, Missing Mika and Sour Dough.

During a game where despite the one-goal difference, you never thought that the Rangers had a chance – and the Jets just took control from the start.

While I wouldn’t say that the Jets didn’t display effort; at the same time, then I thought they did what most super-teams do against bad-teams – they played it simple against an opponent that they had no respect for – and where furthermore – why would they respect these bad Blueshirts in the first place?

Winnipeg, with their eyes on the prize, have much bigger fish to fry – and going balls-to-the-wall against a non-conference opponent, one with minimal playoff chances, isn’t going to make-or-break them.

(And there’s no point in risking injury either.)

That said, and in a match featuring a team with Cup aspirations against one planning for an early summer – and it were still the Jets who doubled-up the Blueshirts in the blocked shots statistic, 21-10 – which just speaks to the Rangers’ lack of interest.

(And most of these 21 blocked shots came against the Rangers’ fourth line – and depth defensemen too.)

As is customary for the Blueshirts, then of course, a member of their ever-growing alumni scored the first goal of the game – and as Vladislav Namestnikov, who I believe has played for 31 of the NHL’s 32 franchises today (I may be exaggerating that number), did at just the 5:18 mark of the match.

But hey, silver lining?

At least his goal wasn’t scored within the first two-minutes of the contest – a Rangers’ staple this season!

Baby steps!

But this goal was also a strong testament about the Rangers’ inability to defend, because with Cole Perfetti by his side – and both Jets were down low – while five Rangers watched the alum score an easy goal.

1-0, bad guys, and just like that – and where this goal allowed spoke volumes about Panarin’s general disinterest in defending too.

I don’t know if I’d use the word “boring” to describe these sixty-minutes – but there was never a flow for the Rangers on this night either.

The Jets just dominated the Blueshirts – and then gave them a gift at the 10:05 mark when Nino Niederreiter took a stupid offensive-zone penalty – and as he did when he ripped off K’Andre Miller’s bucket when behind the net of the best goalie in the league today – the American-born Connor Hellebuyck.

Winnipeg, who must’ve still thought it was Christmastime, as they were certainly most charitable here, then actually allowed Mika Zibanejad to score a wide-open power-play goal just 55-seconds into the Rangers’ man-up time, which in turn, ended the depressing power-play drought in the Big Apple.

But after that?

The season of giving was over.

Despite the score tied at 1-1 at the time – and unless you just refuse to give up on these Blueshirts – then you knew it was only a matter of time before the inevitable struck – a Jets’ win.

To their credit, and the only area of strength that the Rangers have had this season, their penalty kill, was back at it at the 16:07 mark following a J.T. Miller hooking call committed against Nikolaj Ehlers.

Speaking of Miller – and this was easily his worst game in his Rangers’ return yet – as he was very undisciplined, the byproduct of frustration, throughout.

As usual and the Rangers’ POWER KILL created chances here – but when Mika continues to turn over pucks on 2 x 1 and/or odd-man rush situations – then you won’t score either.

And let’s face it, his shorthanded assist on Kreider’s man-down goal from the game previous (Columbus), was somewhat “puck luck” – as Mika won’t shoot – and he was lucky that his BFF did during that 2 x 0 opportunity.

As the two teams returned to the ice for the second period with this 1-1 score still in-tact, then the Jets continued to pummel the Rangers in their own zone.

When the Blueshirts finally tilted the ice – but only because their fourth line was out there – we then had the turning point of the game.

Just 3:11 in, and despite Rempe being blatantly crosschecked into Hellebuyck, by yep, you guessed it, another former member of the alumni, this time Morgan Barron – and it was #73 who was boxed for “goaltender’s interference.”

This was a horrid call – and where even the Jets’ announcers were saying as such.

This was another example of a “REMPUTATION” penalty – while also being a call in favor of the league’s best goalie of the past four-years too.

Hellebuyck gets superstar calls, while of course, Rempe never gets any benefit from the officials.

Double whammy.

The Rangers, returned to the penalty kill, had a chance to get out of it, but 52-seconds into it and there was a frustrated Miller again, who this time, took a whack at Ehlers.

The Blueshirts got lucky here, as instead of being on a 5 x 3 kill, Ehlers responded in turn with a slash of his own, where as a result, the man-down remained at 5 x 4.

However, and with just five-seconds away from being 2-2 on the PK – and there was Vilardi, who Rosen would just not shut up about all-game, to deposit the puck into the back of CZAR IGOR’s net while two-feet out and dead-center from it.

2-1, bad guys.

Your game-winning goal too.

While yes, this Winnipeg power-play should have never transpired; but at the same time, there was still 34:54 of clock left to be ticked.

And the Jets kept on tick-tick-ticking themselves – as the Rangers, on their heels, continued to back-pedal and chase them in their own zone.

Perhaps the box score doesn’t reflect it, but CZAR IGOR made various ten-bell saves from this point on – and where without him – then the final score disparity would have been wider.

Hellebuyck, who was also fantastic, got breaks too – two of them to be precise – as the Rangers did hit the post twice.

The two players who created these <DINGS>?

Braden Schneider, a depth defenseman and fourth-line center, Jonny Brodzinski.

In other words, no roaring from the Rangers’ FAT CATS.

Just 3:11 following the BS call against Rempe, and the Rangers received a make-up call when Brandon Tanev, pushed into CZAR IGOR by K’Andre Miller, was boxed for the same thing.

So for the people still complaining about the officials – then you can’t say that the stripes didn’t give the Blueshirts a chance either.

The end result of this gifted power-play?

A new PP drought – 0-1.

At the 9:52 mark of this second stanza, eight-seconds shy of the half-way mark of the game/period and there was J.T. Miller taking his third trip to the penalty box – and this time for blatantly cross-checking Vilardi.

The Jets had their chances here, but CZAR IGOR made all of the saves.

And this is when Schneider found his meeting of rubber and iron as well.

The Rangers, who could never get out of their own way, returned to the penalty kill with only 1:43 remaining, as Othmann, who had one of his better showings (but who’s still without his first NHL goal), had high-sticked Barron.

The Blueshirts killed the first 1:43 of this Jets’ power-play at the end of this middle period – and then killed off the final thirteen-seconds remaining to start the final frame.

Now back to even-strength, then at just the 3:06 mark, Dylan “No Relations to Carmelo Anthony Joe” DeMelo had seemingly scored following another horrendous showing from Missing Mika.

However, the Blueshirts caught another break from the officials, as following a review, the goal was waved off for goalie interference – as Barron, when screening CZAR IGOR and tied-up with U.V. too, had clicked heels with the Rangers’ goalie.

So what could’ve been 3-1, bad guys, was returned to 2-1 – and again, for the people crying about the officials – they were at least consistent – as when it came to the subject of goalie interference – they gave the benefit of the doubt to the backstops on all three occasions – and where may I also  add – twice in favor for the Blueshirts.

(But to be clear – Rempe didn’t commit a penalty at all – nor did Tanev for that matter either.)

The Rangers, fresh off their reprieve, got another chance to tie; as down to 14:14 remaining and DeMelo had caught Lafreniere high with his stick.

Twenty-seconds into the Rangers’ third power-play of the game?

Then CZAR IGOR was forced to make a robbery save on Mark Scheifele.

The end result?

A 1-3 power-play on the night.

As we approached ten-minutes remaining and there was the Rangers’ fourth line out there – and of course – winning puck battles and generating zone time too.

And once they changed?

Then there was Perfetti, for the second time in the match, blowing by three different Rangers – and where again – there was CZAR IGOR to keep this game within one.

Down to 9:00 remaining and returning Ranger, the Reclamation Project from Los Angeles, Arthur Kaliyev, ate two big hits – and where Schenn’s final blow knocked him out from the match.

Not that you would’ve known had you not seen it anyway – as Kaliyev, and to be fair, like most Blueshirts in this game, was ineffective and unnoticeable.

The final 2:08 was pretty much a snapshot of the Rangers’ season.

The Blueshirts, who have yet to score one goal this season with their goalie pulled, extended that streak to 65 consecutive games this season.

Trocheck had a great chance to tie it with 1:22 to go – but Adam Lowry got there in the nick of time in order to block this chance.

But Mika wasn’t blocked.

Down to 45-seconds, and with a chance to at least come out of this game with a loser’s point – and there was this loser, a player who should’ve been traded/deported a long time ago, Missing Mika himself, missing a wide-open net.

But wait, there’s more!

After missing this GAPING HOLE (based on his hockey in these situations, then it still amazes me that he actually impregnated someone), then, and for an encore, Mental Midget Mika fanned on another shot.

Following these two miscues, then the only thing to look out for was whether the Jets would hit the puck line or not (win by 2+).

They did not, and as a result, a 2-1 loss for the Rangers – and instead of the multiple goal loss that they deserved.

It’s hard to really get up for these games anymore – and sadly – I do think my writing reflects that too.

Adding to the anger were all of the post-game interviews, were Lateralette and his crew were promoting the idea of “moral victories.”

We’re 65-games in!

I also don’t want to hear about creating chemistry either – and as Big Billy Borgen suggested.

The Rangers, who after their win over the Islanders last week, had not only a playoff spot, but control over their own postseason destiny too, have blown it.

While the Blueshirts (68-points) remain two-points away from second wild card Columbus (70-points) (but it’s CBJ who has a game in-hand, having only played 64-games); this now four-game losing streak, one off from their season “high” of five consecutive losses, has eliminated the former edge they once had over the teams also looking to bump off the Blue Jackets (and first wild card Ottawa, 73-points, too).

Following all games played on the evening of March 11th, and Montreal, because of one less game played, but with the same 68-points, has jumped over the Rangers in the standings.

Boston, who blew up their team at the deadline, also has 68-points – but trail the Rangers in the standings because they have played 66-games.

And then there’s free-falling Detroit, 2-7-1 in their last ten games played, with 66-points in 64 games – and who will host the lowly Sabres tonight (3/12) during TNT’s national game of the week.

Should the Wings win?

Then it’s a virtual four-way tie for ninth-place in the conference.

And should that become the case, then what was a playoff spot for the Rangers just last week, will then return to a battle of five-teams playing for the right to get eliminated in the first-round of the playoffs – and with only 17-games remaining.

The Blueshirts blew it.

Just End The Season.

Had the Rangers not extended Lafreniere earlier this season, then what kind of contract would have he received this summer? Suffice to say and Lafreniere has been horrible ever since re-signing – and where he’ll need a productive summer once this contract goes into effect. Photo Credit: NYR

Here is our 82-game mantra, which is also known as my 33-word daily disclaimer, that I post on this site after every game played:

“WHATEVER THE RANGERS DO FROM NOW UNTIL THE TRADE DEADLINE DOESN’T MATTER. THEY CAN ONLY BE JUDGED BY WHATEVER THEY DO FOLLOWING THE DEADLINE AND BY WHAT THEY DO IN THE 2025 PLAYOFFS!”

In other words, sixty-five down, seventeen to go, and then the real hockey, the only games that matter, begin.

But at this rate – will the Rangers even be there for the real hockey?

Magic Eight Ball still says “highly unlikely.”

In case you missed it, then here’s where I last left off – Adam Fantilli making the Rangers look silly:

NYR/CBJ 3/9 Review: The Blue Jackets “Layeth The Smackdown” on The Blueshirts’ Rooty Poo Candy Asses on M$G’s WWE Night; Rangers Look Like Jabronis, “Buy One Get One Free” Goals Galore; Fantilli Makes New York Look Silly, “Power Kill” Remains Dominant; “Lavy’s Lot” Putrid Everywhere Else, James Dolan Needs To Make Two Firings – And PRONTO At That, Standings, M$GN & More

As said about 8679877987907 times this season, then both Laviolette and Chris Drury need to go. James Dolan can’t allow this to continue any further.

After being embarrassed over the weekend in their two biggest games played yet, the losses to Ottawa and Columbus; then come Monday, the team had the day off from the ice – but a travel day in the air.

Come Tuesday morning and the team held an AM practice – and where it was revealed that Brett Berard was going to be scratched and in favor of Kaliyev.

That sure worked out.

Bozo The Bench Boss never fails to make clown decisions.

I also had to shake my head and resign to laughter when I saw that both Calvin de Haan and Juuse Parssinen were going to remain as healthy scratches.

While I’m not high on either of them, nor have any desire to ever see them play as Rangers again; then don’t forget the fact that everyone involved with this organization is preaching playoffs – yet they traded both Jimmy Vesey and Ryan Lindgren for this pair of fellow expiring contracts.

By the way, Colorado is 6-0-1 since that trade.

Here was Laviolette’s line-up for the sixty-fifth game of this 2024-25 season:

FIRST LINE: Panarin/Trocheck/Lafreniere

SECOND LINE: Cuylle/Miller/Mika

THIRD LINE: Kreider/Carrick/Kaliyev

FOURTH LINE: Othmann/Brodzinski/Rempe

FIRST PAIR: Miller/Borgen

SECOND PAIR: Vaakanainen/Schneider

THIRD PAIR: Soucy/Jones

STARTING GOALIE: CZAR IGOR

BACK UP GOALIE: Quick

LTIR: Adam Edstrom

IR: Adam Fox

HEALTHY SCRATCHES: Calvin de Haan, Juuse Parssinen and Brett Berard

Just the sight of Lateralette makes my Blueshirts’ blood boil.

FIRST PERIOD

As noted, my job, my job, my job!

Waa-waa-waa!

In turn, I don’t have any time today to do my normal style of a full-length GAME REVIEW – but at this point – then what is the point?

I already said it all above – and where it’s the same old shit.

Furthermore?

Then if you didn’t feel this way before, then it’s this way today:

This team is limping out during this final stretch of the season.

However, if you do want my complete play-by-play of the game, then you can find it here: https://x.com/NYCTheMiC

At this time, then here’s what I said in real-time at the end of each period.

SECOND PERIOD

THIRD PERIOD

Just like when he traded both Ryan McDonagh and J.T. Miller to Tampa, and former general manager, Jeff Gorton, trade of Mats Zuccarello to Dallas was an ill-fated decision too. After all, who can forget what Zuccarello did to the Rangers on the night when the Blueshirts retired Henrik Lundqvist’s #30?

Up Next For The Rangers: A meaningless practice on Wednesday, followed by a game in Minnesota on Thursday.

The Wild, one of the better teams at the start of this season, have fallen off a bit.

While they remain in playoff contention; they are currently plagued with injuries.

Not only are they without their best player Kirill Kaprizov, but also joining the Russian on the Minnesota walking-wounded list are Jonas Brodin and Joel Eriksson Ek.

But I’m sure that won’t stop them from “Wildin’ Out” against the Rangers anyway.

You can also expect a non-stop M$GN Minny love-fest from Sam & Joe too.

Also in your future?

The second M$GN “Garden of Dreams” fundraiser of the season – and where the first one was the least received yet ever since its inception a decade ago.

Prediction?

This one fares far worst than the first – as people are tuning out and running away from these broadcasts and games.

The later-than-normal start time (8PM) doesn’t help either.

  1. Like you have said over and over this season, what the heck is PL doing, wish we knew, but definitely the most frustrating season and I’m sure it will continue….until April, then let’s hope major changes…….

  2. From the 17 games left, only 4 would be considered “easy”, Ducks, Sharks, Flyers, Isles. 4/17 does not a play-off team make. They might steal one from the Canucks or Wild, but .500 hockey won’t get them in.

I only caught the end of the game, I was working and couldn’t fit it in, but they looked so listless. It’s clear Mika Zika is pulling down his line, Cuylle has looked better on the 3rd line! But with his “apparent” value, he’s here for at least another year, if not two.

Another point of interest I noticed, Rangers have one of the fewest OT appearances of any team this season. Tells me they can’t close out games when behind, and only win when far enough ahead. Let’s hope there’s a big shake up for the team come the off-season to address these woes.

    1. They said after the game against CBJ (3/15) that NYR lead the league in shutouts this year – and where I’m sure among the bubble teams, they also lead the league in 3+ goal losses.

Just speaks to your overtime theory – and you are 100% correct.

  3. Sam and Joe grasping at the straws of a great PK made it sound like taking penalties is a great idea.

But for seeing him on ice occasionally, there is nothing to say Chris Kreider played in this game. A ghost .
